Photo Manager
Position # 1005
(Revised November, 2010)
Scope and Purpose:
To establish the areas of work effort required to ensure the performance of duties. To define
areas of personnel management of the Photo manager aboard CCL vessels.
Requirements
Photo managers aboard all ships, regardless of cruise format (cruise length), manage by
example. Managers are expected to participate in activities as a genuine team member
working as part of the department.
Each is expected to be proficient in the following:
ā€¢ Photography: Basic and advanced skills in all aspects of onboard photo
operations.
ā€¢ Production: Knowledgeable in RA4 process and experienced in color balance and quality
control.
ā€¢ Sales: Effective at selling and promoting photographic products and services.
ā€¢ Passenger Interaction/guest service: Strong communication skills (in English) projecting a
warm, friendly and professional personality.
ā€¢ Safety: Maintains safe working practices within the department and is knowledgeable in
all aspects of safety on board the ship in regards to the continued safety of the crew and
guests.
Reports to: Hotel Director (shipboard) and Operations Manager (shore side).
Job Functions
Photo managers are aboard each CCL vessel to "Lead" by example. As the central figure in
the onboard photo team, each Photo manager performs the following:
ā€¢ Participates in duties such as photographing of guests and sales.
ā€¢ Coordinates and directs the efforts of the photographers.
ā€¢ Keeps track of all Photo Department personnel at any location.
ā€¢ Schedules and establishes a smooth flow of onboard operations (from taking the
photograph, producing saleable prints, to sales to passengers).
ā€¢ Communicates continuously with the Hotel Director and Cruise director to make sure
announcements are in the capers and they coordinate with other onboard activities.
ā€¢ Ensures all quality areas are correct.
Motivates and encourages his team to perform by being a coach, mentor, and example
to his fellow team members.
In order to effectively carry out the above, the following duties are mandated as
minimum requirement of the Photo manager position and should be self scheduled
accordingly.
ā€¢ Participation in a minimum of one gangway per 7 day period (photographing or directing
guests) and participation or oversight of a further gangway in same 7 day period.
ā€¢ A minimum of a further 2 hours photography should by performed within 7day period.
ā€¢ Managers will be required to be present for the half an hour prior to the opening of the
photo gallery on any day following a formal night and on all debark/cash sales mornings.
Managers are required to stay present at least a further hour after opening on these
occasions.
ā€¢ Managers will be required to work at a FSS register for a minimum of 10 hours per 7-day
period.
Key Result Areas
Key result areas are intended to be measurable, attainable, challenging and mutually agreed
upon.
Management:
ā€¢ The photo manager is to provide guidance and leadership. This is a "Human Relations"
position.
ā€¢ The photo manager implements the directions, projects, programs, policy and procedure
instructions of the Operations manager in the Photo Department.
ā€¢ The photo manager ensures that CCL's policies and procedures are being followed.
ā€¢ The photo manager must participate, coordinate, communicate, and motivate.
Reporting:
The photo manager is to prepare comprehensive reports on a timely basis for both onboard
and shore side management.
ā€¢ E-mails must be responded to within a minimum of 48hrs of receipt.
ā€¢ Employee evaluations, specific status reports, voyage/cruise recaps, and kiosk inventory
must be filled out accurately and in a professional manner.
ā€¢ Proper documentation and follow up must be made for any action taken to help improve
the performance of photo personnel.
ā€¢ It is Photo managerā€™s responsibility to formerly request their own performance evaluation
by the Hotel director at periods ninety after sign on and one week prior to sign off from
there assigned vessels.
ā€¢ Each photo manager must monitor onboard income and expenses
ā€¢ End of cruise reports must be completed, checked and posted within 48 hours of the
cruise ending.
Scheduling:
The photo manager prepares specific work schedules establishing assignments for
themselves and each team member. Schedules must be made prior to commencement of
each cruise and must be posted for the entire cruise.
Quality Control:
The photo manager monitors print, display and presentation qualities. The photo manager's
inputs into improvements are essential to provide superior service to CCL passengers.
Equipment inventory, maintenance and repair:
ā€¢ The photo manager must be proficient in the operation of the photographic and
production equipment and must ensure onboard safety.
ā€¢ Managers are responsible for punctually debarking all nonworking equipment using the
correct procedures.
ā€¢ Management handover procedures must be completed at least three days before a
Manager signs off a vessel. All equipment must be accounted for and a completed
inventory sent to head office. Any equipment that is not accounted for should be paid for
before a Photo Manager signs off.
ā€¢ Photo managers will be financially responsible for any negligent loss or damage to
inventoried equipment that has not been pre-assigned to a particular team member.
Training:
The photo manager must develop the team to its fullest (most effective) potential. It is the
Photo Managers responsibility to continue training the photographers on a regular basis.
Cash Handling:
The photo manager must practice, and is responsible for, accurate and secure cash handling
procedures.
Consumable inventory control:
Managers are responsible for establishing and maintaining par levels of all items held in both
central and working inventories.
Gallery management:
The Photo manager is responsible for proper merchandising of all retail items (application of
price stickers, neat and adequate display of retail items). The display of photographs in the
gallery must be properly organized using correct signage at all times.
Revenue control:
Photo managers are expected to surpass or achieve set revenue targets. Failure to achieve
or surpass revenue targets for a period exceeding but not limited to eight weeks will reflect on
end of year evaluations for Photo managers in a negative manner.
Support Objectives: These objectives are coordinated with general operations aboard ship
(both within the Photo Department and in support of other departments).
Cooperation:
ā€¢ The photo manager must maintain a positive perspective of the total guest experience.
Our support and cooperation with other departments contributes to a "team" effort to
make the cruise as pleasurable to the passenger as possible.
ā€¢ The photo manager is responsible for any interdepartmental contributions and will
communicate all requests and activities with the Hotel Director aboard and the Photo
Department operations manager.
Personal Qualifications:
The photo manager must possess and demonstrate the following:
ā€¢ Pleasant outgoing personality
ā€¢ Effective communications skills in English, including both written and verbal skills
ā€¢ The ability to motivate and energize their team
ā€¢ Proper grooming and personal hygiene
ā€¢ A professional image
ā€¢ The capacity for leadership
ā€¢ Be a Team player
Rules and Regulations:
The Photo managers must comply with the following:
ā€¢ Ship Rules and Regulations: The photographer is provided with a copy. This includes
compulsory attendance to fire and lifeboat drills as directed by the ship's officers.
ā€¢ Government Regulations: The Photo manager must comply with US Customs,
Immigration and USPH regulations.
ā€¢ Photo Department Rules and Regulations: The Photo manager is provided with a copy.
This includes suggestions for the first 60 days of service aboard ship.
Ship Assignment is determined by the Photo Department operations manager on an
"as needed" basis.
