Learning In Sight
In our December 2015 newsletter we touched on the value
of using “right brain” stimuli to increase creativity in your
personal life. Expounding more deeply on that point, we
want to talk about the value of incorporating that very
same philosophy into the world of corporate learning.
In corporate workshops today, participants often find
themselves face to face with traditional left brain
teaching styles and learning methods that leave them
feeling bored, unengaged, or outright disappointed. We’re
not saying that left brain learning is by any means wrong,
but it’s simply not how everyone enjoys learning all the
time!
What is the difference between “left brain” and “right
brain” learning you ask?
Simply put, the left side of the brain holds influence over
logic, critical thinking and reasoning. It often goes hand in
hand with the read, memorise, write and “listen to teacher”
way of learning that we may remember from our school
days. On the other hand, the right side of the brain holds
influence over creativity, innovation and emotion.
To illustrate, a left brain way of instructing might sound

something like, “Please copy the definition of empathy in
your workbooks as shown on the PPT.”
Where right brain coaching might sound like…
“Based on your understanding, please capture the feeling
of empathy in a drawing and share your creation with your
group.”
Can you feel the difference?!
Essentially the task at hand is the same, but the right
brain twist makes things so much more imaginative, fun and
allows for a much greater freedom of expression.
Right brain learning can be achieved by many means,
including brainstorming sessions, hands on activities,
games, video clips, background music, role-plays and act out
sessions.
The key to success would be using these exciting methods,
not just as a means of fun, but making sure critical key
learning points are weaved in-between.
At OTD we strive to combine the best right brain and left
brain learning techniques to create an optimal learning
environment and unforgettable workshop experience. For

workplace, please contact Mark Schold at
