La Diaria Lab
1.
2. We decided to create an innovation lab, since we
believe that interaction between disciplines and
knowledges in a collaborative environment can
generate important findings which could answer
the problems of our time.
3. C O N T E X T
A series of political, economic, environmental
and social phenomena is generating new global
concepts of creating value, power, governability
and governance.
New modalities for work, production and
investment are producing new requirements
and learning modes, questioning at the same
time the current regulations and institutions
coming from previous times. The disruptive
changes not only point out the obsolescence of
present-day paradigms, but also lead to the rise
of new ones.
4. L A B
Nowadays, the media is experiencing a permanent
slow adaptation to disruptive changes caused by the
new ways of information generation and circulation
enabled by the Internet.
In La Diaria we care beyond information technology
and communication. We strongly believe in the need
of having citizen labs, where solving a problem does
not necessarily imply a computer application.
That's why the ground floor of our newspaper office
is being transformed into a Media Lab, providing the
necessary co-creation technology and
methodologies and, above all, creating a confident
space where multiple actors from diverse disciplines
can converge, finally producing the proper
environment for innovation.
5. In 2015 there were only
31 MEDIA LABS
LABS in the world created by media,
mostly in Europe and the United States.
Research by the Digital Media Research Program of the University of Texas
(Ramón Salaverria, 1995)
According to the activity systematization in the 31 labs, four purposes can be listed, which
are not necessarily present in all the studied cases:
1) technological development of digital applications (12 labs)
2) exploration of new narratives, multimedia formats and data journalism (9 labs)
3) promotion and encouragement of new business initiatives, projects and startups (7 labs)
4) vocational training and media literacy schools for young people (3 labs)

of innovative projects, focusing on communication and culture.

searching for collective models of economic sustenance in alliance
with citizens/consumers.

citizen participation oriented towards co-creation for an open
governance, and strengthening and developing anticipatory social
skills and informed use of the future.
