Management of natural resources

  1. 1. Management Of Natural Resources Anything in the environment which can be used is called a natural resource . A system of controlling the use of natural resources in such a way as to avoid their wastage and to use them in the most effective way , is called management of natural resources. The development which meets the current basis human needs and also preserve the resources for the needs of future generations , is called sustainable development MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
  2. 2. The resources on earth are limited . The proper management of natural resources takes into consideration long term prospective and prevents their exploitation to hilt for short term goals . The proper management can ensure equitable distribution of natural resources so that all the people can benefit from the development from these resources WHY DO WE NEED TO MANAGE OUR RESOURCES ?
  3. 3. FOREST AND WILDLIFE:
  4. 4. FOREST AND WILDLIFE: A large area of land on which trees and other plants grow naturally is called a forest . And the wild animals and birds which live in the forest, are called wildlife
  5. 5. One of the main aim of the management of forest and wildlife is to conserve the biodiversity which we have inherited . A person with an interest in something is called a stakeholder. Four stakeholder of forest are:  The person who live in and around forest  The forest department  The industrialists  The forest and wildlife activists THE AIM OF THE MANAGEMENT OF FOREST AND WILDLIFE
  6. 6. Advantages of forest Large quantity of raw materials . It provides area for wildlife . It maintains a perfect water cycle. It prevents soil erosion. It prevents flood ADVANTAGES OF FOREST:
  7. 7. Efforts made to protect forest The case of khejri trees There is a B ishnoi community in Rajasthan for whom conservation of forest and wildlife has been a religious belief. In 1973, A mrita D evi B ishnoi led a group of 363 person who sacrificed their lives for the protection of khejri trees in khejrali village near Jodhpur in Rajasthan EFFORTS MADE TO PROTECT FOREST
  8. 8. The Chipko Andolan The Chipko Andolan originated from an incident in a remote village called Reni in Garhwal , high up in the Himalayas in the early 1970s. A logging contractor had been allowed to cut down trees in a forest close to a village. Women of the village reached the forest quickly and clasped the tree trunks with their arms preventing the workers from cutting down the trees. The forest trees were thus saved THE CHIPKO ANDOLAN:
  9. 9. Participation of local people in the management of forest Peoples participation in the management of forest can help in increasing forest produce as well as in their conservation . In return for help in forest , the villagers were given employment in both silviculture and harvesting in forest , 25% of the final harvest produce , and were allowed to collect firewood and fodder from the forest area on a nominal payment PARTICIPATION OF LOCAL PEOPLE IN THE MANAGEMENT OF FOREST
  10. 10. CONSERVATION OF WILDLIFE
  11. 11. The large scale poaching of wild animals residing in the forests by man is a serious threat to the survival of many animal and bird species. This also disturbs the food chains in which these animals occur resulting in undesirable consequences for the whole ecosystem . Use of leather should not be preferred . THE CONSERVATION OF WILDLIFE
  12. 12.  Measures to be taken for the conservation of wildlife Laws should be made to impose a total ban on poaching of any animal or bird belonging to an endangered species .  Indiscriminate killing of animals in abundance should not be allowed.  National Parks and Sanctuaries should be established MEASURES TO BE TAKEN FOR THE CONSERVATION OF WILDLIFE
  13. 13. WATER FOR ALL:
  14. 14. Water is the basic necessity for all forms of life , human beings, other animals as well as plants. The regions having good availability of water are flourishing because they have good crops but the regions having shortage of water are in the thick of poverty because of poor crop growth . WATER FOR ALL
  15. 15.  Our population is increasing rapidly. Only a little rain water seeps in the ground and gets stored as ground water.  HYV crops require much more water .  Discharge of untreated sewage industrial wastes into rivers WE ARE NOT ABLE TO MEET THE DEMANDS FOR WATER OF ALL THE PEOPLE BECAUSE
  16. 16. DAM
  17. 17. In order to make proper use of river water, dams are constructed across the rivers to regulate the flow of water . In our country dams have built across the many rivers . Bhakra dam is one such dam which has been built across Satluj DAMS DAMS ARE USEFUL BECAUSE: •Water in dams is used for irrigation . •It is used for generating electricity. •These are used for controlling floods. •These are used for supplying water in cities
  18. 18. Coal and petroleum Coal and petroleum are fuels . All the energy of our basic needs and the for the manufacturing of goods are mostly met by coal and petroleum reserves . We have been using coal and petroleum that they are likely to get exhausted in the near future. It is predicted that the petroleum reserves and the coal reserves will last 40 years and 200 years respectively COAL AND PETROLEUM
  19. 19.  Switch off electrical appliances when not needed STEPS TO REDUCE CONSUMPTION OF COAL AND PETROLEUM
  20. 20.  use cfl‘s use stairs to climb at least up to three floors
  21. 21. THE THREE R’S TO SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT
  22. 22. REDUCE : Reduce It means that we use less of the natural resources by cutting on those practices which lead to their wastage . RECYCLE : Recycle It means that we should collect the used and discarded items of paper , plastic , glass and metals , and send them to the respective industries for making fresh paper , plastic , glass or metal objects . REUSE : Reuse Reuse means that , if possible we should use the same things again
