Week #10 Summary
 The 10th week of the college football season was billed as
“Statement Saturday” and a number of teams had a statement game
to help advance their playoff hopes.
 Alabama was held to under 30 points for the first time this year but
totally dominated an overmatched LSU team in a 29-0 blowout win
in Baton Rouge!
 Georgia went on the road to Lexington and came away with an
impressive win at Kentucky to clinch the SEC East Division.
 Clemson is becoming more of a juggernaut and looks to be the only
real legitimate to Alabama’s superiority at this point.
 And West Virginia won a big shootout in Austin, TX as Will Grier
again put himself back in the Heisman Trophy race discussion.

Week #10 Takeaways
 West Virginia’s great call to go for two and the win.
 Thank you West Virginia Head Coach Dana Holgorson.
 Watching your West Virginia team battle Texas and fight back on Will Grier’s
unbelievable TD pass and then not hesitate to go for two was refreshing!
 Holgorson didn’t call any timeouts of his own even though Texas called two.
 There was no turning back even though the first completed two-point was
nullified because a timeout had been called.
 Holgorson trusted his quarterback and practiced all week for that moment
and decisively went ahead made the call and won the game!
 A classic big-time coaching move by an excellent coach!!

 What Was Coach Ed Orgeron thinking? Contrast Coach Holgorson’s decision to
go for two to LSU Head Coach Ed Orgeron’s numerous decisions to play it
conservatively and keep it close! There were three questionable decisions by Orgeron
that I frowned upon:
 1) It started on a Game Day interview when Coach Orgeron – with his flip and silly
answers – made it clear that he didn’t believe the Tigers had a chance to win
 2) the bone head decision to defer the decision after winning the coin toss and giving
Alabama the ball first. LSU needed to come out in that electric environment and try
aggressively to get some points on the board right out of the gate. Instead, Orgeron
chose to give Alabama the ball first. Even though the Crimson Tide drive stalled and
they didn’t score, they established early on that they were the dominant team and the
crowd never had a chance to get into the game
 3) late in the 3rd quarter LSU trailed 22-0 and faced a 4th and 7 at the Alabama 37 yard
line. Rather than go for it, Orgeron elected to punt! Even announcer Gary Danielson
was critical of Coach Orgeron on these critical calls. Coach Orgeron you need to be
more like WV Coach Dana Holgorson and believe in your team!

Week #10 Takeaways
 Maryland Football. It has been a tough fall for Maryland football. The
decision to retain and then fire Head Coach DJ Durkin really blew up this past
week and Maryland totally mishandled the entire fiasco.
 But to hear pundits like Paul Finebaum (a so-called “sports authority”) make an
absurd statement that it will be impossible to recruit talented football players to
Maryland shows that Finebaum was never recruited!
 A new coach will come into Maryland with an entirely new staff and can say
that none of the staff had anything to do with the toxic culture that existed and
may have caused the death of Jordan McNair.
 A new coach will come in talking about doing it the right way - in Jordan’s
memory - and building a great new tradition and that these recruited players
will have a chance to be part of a legacy and build something special.
 Maryland will be able to recruit and the right coach will be very successful in
building that program.

Week #10 Biggest Surprise
 Matthew Kupec – – West Virginia. Will Grier is a great quarterback and he
has a really good supporting cast at the skilled positions. But Iowa State
totally shut down the Mountaineers a couple of weeks ago and many thought
their Big 12 championship hopes were gone. So yesterday’s gutsy win over
Texas showed a great deal about West Virginia’s character. They kept the
pressure on against Texas and in a game with seven lead changes wound up
with a dramatic win in the closing seconds. The match up against Oklahoma
later this month looms big.
 Matt Kupec – Penn State’s absolute no-show against Michigan. I thought
Michigan was going to win the game and it entered as the favorite. But I
thought Penn State would give them a battle or at least compete! The
Nittany Lions could only muster 186 yards of offense and were totally
outmatched against the Wolverines. I do think Michigan is one of the best
four teams in American right now but Penn State’s abysmal performance
was a big surprise.

Week #10 Best Performance
 Matthew Kupec – I am going with the SMU Mustangs and their impressive
win over the Houston Cougars. I have been a big fan of Houston all year and feel
like they are the best “Group of 5” team. With impressive victories over Arizona
and USF, I thought #17 Houston had a legitimate chance of a major college bowl
berth. But SMU smoked them yesterday. SMU QB Ben Hicks threw for 318 yards
and 4 TD’s and held Houston’s vaunted offense to 365 yards.
 Matt Kupec – – (tie). Will Grier’s outstanding performance in a key Big 12 road
clash for West Virginia in its exciting win over the Texas Longhorns. The lead
changed seven times and Will kept slinging! One of college football’s best
gunslingers, Will wound up going 28-42-346 yards and 3 TD’s including one of
the prettiest, and clutch, scoring strikes to Dan Jennings with 16 seconds left.
And then Grier ran for the game wining two-point conversion to give the
Mountaineers the win! A great game and a great player making incredible plays!!
And a shout out to the Michigan Wolverine defense! They held Penn State QB
Trace McSorley to 5-13-83 yards and I INT. Penn State could generate just 186
yards of offense. Michigan’s defense is #1 in total defense. Since halftime of the
opening loss to Notre Dame, the Michigan defense has allowed their opponents
to score on only 15 of the last 104 drives.

Week #10 Biggest Disappointment
 Matthew Kupec - LSU’s loss to Alabama. I was one of the few that thought
that LSU would win this game. But to have LSU not even compete was truly
disappointing. The play calling was too conservative and the Tigers seemed
scared to take any chances. In this game, they needed to come out and play
without abandon and put everything on the line. The late third quarter field
goal try from the Alabama served as an illustration of the too conservative
approach under Coach Ed Orgeron.
 Matt Kupec - Houston and junior quarterback D’Eriq King were coming off
an impressive performance last week with King’s 6 TD performance against
South Florida. I proclaimed King a Heisman candidate! What was I
thinking? Or as the legendary Lee Corso would say, “not so fast my friend!”
King was held to 11-22-175 and TDs and 54 yards rushing as the Houston
Cougars laid a big fat egg against SMU in a disappointment 45-31 loss to the
4-5 SMU Mustangs. Maybe the Houston win over South Florida wasn’t as
great as I thought as the USF Bulls lost to Tulane over the weekend.
