Week #7 Best Games: Upset Saturday
Upset Saturday!! The 7th week of the college football traditionally is a week of big upsets
and this year did not disappoint. Four Top #10 teams (Georgia, West Virginia, Washington
and Penn State) lost. And four additional Top #25 teams (Wisconsin, Miami, Colorado and
Auburn) also lost. And other highly ranked teams Texas, UCF, Notre Dame and USF all
survived scares in narrow victories.
Impressive performances. There were some impressive performances. It is looking more
and more like Alabama and everybody else in college football this year. Jim Harbaugh
may have had his biggest win as the Michigan Wolverines blasted Wisconsin. And LSU
recovered well from last week’s Florida defeat to totally handle the previously undefeated
Georgia Bulldogs.
A Win. UCLA won and handed Coach Chip Kelly his first win of the season. Nebraska’s
drought continues as the Cornhuskers lost a tough one in overtime to Northwestern and
leave Coach Scott Frost still looking for his first win as the Nebraska coach. And poor
Rutgers could only muster 179 yards in another embarrassing loss this time 34-7 at the
hands of the Maryland Terrapins.

Week #7 Biggest Surprise
Matthew Kupec – the performance of QB Will Grier and his West Virginia
offense. Or should I say the shockingly poor performance of the Mountaineers
offense. They came into Ames, Iowa with the swagger of a #6 ranking and
undefeated season. They left having being throttled in a 30-14 loss to Iowa State
and able to generate only a measly 152 yards in total offense. West Virginia has a
very tough four week stretch upcoming in November against the upper echelon
of the Big 12 conference and they had hoped to begin that stretch still undefeated.
Iowa State took care of that possibility!
Matt Kupec –LSU. After losing to Florida last week many pundits thought that
LSU were done for the year. Even with impressive early season wins against
Miami and Auburn (although neither are looking as good as they had earlier in
the year!), LSU looked like old LSU last week. But this week against Georgia was
another story. LSU dominated from the opening kickoff and thoroughly
manhandled Georgia. Using a balanced offense (200 yards passing, 275 yards
rushing), LSU played like a possible playoff team. QB Joe Burrow threw for 200
yards and ran for another 66 yards including a late 59 yard scamper in showing
that he has a great deal of moxie as LSU’s new leader. Interestingly, in the three
big LSU wins Burrow has thrown for a completion rate of 50% or less.

Week #7 Best Performance
Matthew Kupec – Iowa State’s defense held the West Virginia offense to a
paltry 152 totals yards in Iowa State’s surprising 30-14 whipping of #6 West
Virginia. West Virginia could generate only 9 first downs and was 1-10 in third
down conversions. The Iowa State defense was the first team this year to be able
to shutdown Grier and his powerful West Virginia offense.
Matt Kupec – I have to go with Michigan’s convincing 38-13 win over #15
Wisconsin. The Big House was rocking and the Wolverines delivered on both
sides of the ball. Michigan doubled up Wisconsin on first downs and rushed for
320 yards in Coach Jim Harbaugh’s biggest win at Michigan. If Texas is back, I
believe Michigan is certainly back as well. With Shea Patterson getting more and
more comfortable in the offense and Michigan using his considerable dual threat
talents, Michigan is back as a contender for the national playoffs.
Iowa St. defense completely shuts down vaunted WV offense.
Big Win for Michigan over Wisconsin

Week #7 Biggest Disappointment
Matthew Kupec – Penn State’s disappointing loss to Michigan State tops my
list for the week. Michigan State came into Happy Valley with a nothing to lose
mentality and converted a fake punt, tried a fake field goal instead of kick for the
tying points late in the 4th quarter and opted to throw to the end zone instead or
run it to preserve another shot at an equalizing kick. That mentality paid off for
the Spartans and Penn State failed to respond. So, maybe the Appalachian State
game wasn’t as much of a surprise as we may have previously thought. Perhaps
the letdown of losing late in the game last week against Ohio State took all the
juice out of Penn State this week.
Matt Kupec – the play of these Top #25 teams: Georgia, West Virginia,
Washington, Penn State, Wisconsin, Miami, Colorado and Auburn. They all
went down on Saturday in losing efforts. Throw in the lackluster performances
of Texas, Notre Dame, Ohio State, UCF and USF who barely escaped with wins.
This week serves as a reminder that you must come prepared to play in college
football because nobody – outside of Alabama – is that dominant this year.
