What is a Media Institution?
• A media institution is a company who own multiple media products
in the form of films, shows, books, radios and magazines.
• These companies will be responsible for writing, designing and
publishing their work to a particular audience.
• Different institutions will distribute different media products to suit
their target audiences. These can range from television and films to
magazines and newspapers.
Examples of Media Institutions
“20th Century Fox” is an example of a major media institution. They
publish many massive films and are responsible for a large
proportion of all films that are published. They are one of the ‘Big
Six’ Hollywood film producers. They are responsible for producing
films such as Ice Age, Star Wars, Deadpool, Home Alone, The
Shawshank Redemption and Titanic. They have a massive revenue
of $28 Billion as of 2015.
Vertigo Films is a very contrasting studio in comparison with
20thCentury Fox. They are based in the UK and focus on producing
smaller films such as Horrid Henry and StreetDance. These smaller
films are a lot less popular than the massive blockbuster films and
therefore have a smaller target audience. For example, Horrid Henry
is targeted to a young audience and StreetDance is obviously
targeting the dancing, younger age.
Music Magazine Media Institutions
Bauer Media Group is an European based media group responsible
for over 600 magazines. In the music magazine industry, they are
responsible for producing magazines such as Kerrang! They are the
largest independent media group in Europe and they are present in
15 different countries
TimeInc is an American, New York based magazine publisher,
producing over 90 magazines. They have a monthly global print of
120 million, which is a huge amount.
Which would I chose to publish my
• I believe that the best option for producing my media magazine would be
Bauer Media Group. This is for a number of reasons. Firstly, they are a huge
company meaning that if they publish it, they could make the magazine
very popular and they could hit my target audience easily. Another reason
that I feel they would be interested is because they produce Kerrang! This
magazine inspired many parts of mine, therefore I feel they could publish
my magazine to the same audience and increase their own revenue.
• Furthermore, they don’t necessarily publish many other rock magazines,
meaning that my magazine could change that
