Pharmacists and Pharmaceutical Industry
Today’s pharmacy graduates can have used their technical
knowledge in pharmaceutical industries, community and
hospital pharmacies, research and academic arena.
A pharmacist is required to
Explain the mode and precautions regarding the use of
medicines dispensed in a hospital pharmacy,
Prepare special formulations normally not available in the
market,
Assist the physician in rendering necessary information
about various drugs, Adverse effects, Drug interactions,
their contra-indications, incompatibility etc.
The extensive clinical training provided by the Pharm.D. degree
program has helped to expand the pharmacist’s roles and
responsibilities within the industry, hospitals & clinical Lab etc.

Pharmacy and pharmacists in context of Bangladesh
Pharmaceuticals products of our country is exported in about 160 counties of the word including
America, England, middle east countries after filling the demand of people of our country.
Herein before, the honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has declared the Pharmaceuticals
Products as the Product of the Year.
The pharmaceutical industry now offers a wide variety of comprehensive experiences set in a
dynamic corporate environment that allow pharmacists to apply clinical skills in innovative and
exciting ways to improve patient healthcare.
Employment in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries setting provides
opportunities for professional development and growth, lateral and upward mobility, and the
opportunity to display and be recognized for one’s unique professional expertise.
Opportunities to collaborate with experts in multidisciplinary project teams further enhance the
value and scope of the pharmacist’s role.
With advances in medical technology, the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries are
constantly expanding efforts to discover, develop, and market new medicines, thereby creating
more employment opportunities for pharmacists. This brochure provides information regarding
some of today’s popular industry career paths for pharmacists.

Discussion on Pharma Industry
In Bangladesh the pharmaceutical sector is one of the most
developed hi-tech sectors which is contributing in the
country's economy.
After the promulgation of Drug Control Ordinance - 1982, the
development of this sector was accelerated.
The professional knowledge, thoughts and innovative ideas
of the pharmacists working in this sector are the key factors
for this development.
Research & Development
R&D is the “backbone” for success in any drug
discovery program. Thus, the extent
of pharmaceutical R&D spending serves as an
important metric to show a company’s
commitment to finding new drugs. At
present, the global pharmaceutical industry
has the second highest R&D
intensity (expenditure as a share of sales)
measures of any sector.
R&D activities may take on many forms
ranging from the development of new
chemical/drug entities to the evaluation as well
as existing products for alternative indications
in both Formulation & Analytical sides.
Presently R & D / PD offers prestigious position
& with good remuneration for the Pharmacist in
Formulation & Analytical sections.

Pharmaceutical Production Department
The pharmaceutical sector has already been declared as the thrust sector by
the government of Bangladesh. Bangladesh has built a strong baseline and
going towards the self-sufficiency for the production of medicine.
Presently we are successfully producing various life saving medicine of
Solid (Tablets & Capsules), Liquid, PFS, Cream-ointment, Injectables, MDI,
DPI, Vaccine, Insulin, anticancer drugs, hormone, etc.
Pharmacy Graduates have significant roles & wide rage of career scopes in
the Production Department.

must be done. The containers
must be labelled.
Quality Control (QC) is concerned with sampling,
specifications and testing as well as the
organization, documentation and release of the
product procedures
Quality Control
Records are made, manually
and/or by recording data on-
line. This should demonstrate
that all the required sampling,
inspecting and testing
procedures were actually
carried out.
Inspection and the date of testing
of materials, intermediate, bulk, and
finished products should be
formally assessed. The products
deviations from specified
procedures must be checked.

In a pharmaceutical operation
process, QA is involved in
several activities such as:
purchasing, dispatching,
warehousing, operational
protocols, manufacturing,
training, quality control,
validation and packaging.
A quality assurance is considered by
merging a series of actions. These
actions collectively ensure product
quality. As a result, the quality
assurance system must establish
specific activities before the start of
production.
All necessary controls or
intermediate products, and any
other in-process controls and
validations must be carried out.
Finished product should be
correctly processed and checked
according to the defined
documented procedures.
It includes the control factors and
product evaluation before
formation of final product. QA
ensure IPC, compliance &
Regulatory requirements that the
products are designed and
developed in a way that follows
the requirements of GMP and GLP.
The satisfactory arrangements
exist to ensure that the
medicinal products are stored,
distributed and subsequently
handled so that quality is
maintained throughout their
shelf life.
Finally, It is important to mention
that the medicinal products are not
distributed, sold or supplied before
maintaining Safety, Quality &
Efficacy by QA Head with
certification for each commercial
production batch.
Quality Assurance is a wide ranging concept which
covers all matters individually or collectively that
influence the quality of a product.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the
result of intelligent efforts

Window of Opportunity for the Pharma
Industry
The pharmaceutical sector of Bangladesh, on all counts, is one of the most prospective sectors
which can grow close to 15 per cent for the next five years riding on the expanded domestic
market as well ass new foreign markets.
Pharmaceutical export is contributing to the GDP of the country and every year this
contribution is positively growing In the meantime, Pharma sector has become the 2nd largest
potential sector in Bangladesh to earn foreign currency. At present, about 30 pharmaceutical
companies have started their export activities.
Many smaller companies are on the verge of entering highly regulated overseas markets.
Bearing in mind its successful past endeavors, the
According to the Export Promotion Bureau, pharmaceutical exports between July-December
rose by 17.225% year-on-year in the current fiscal year, and in FY 2014-15 amounted to USD
72.64 million. However, these sales are tiny compared to the vast world market, estimated to be
worth more than USD 520 billion in 2014.
The Bangladesh pharma industry churns out about 8,000 generic drugs under 26,813 registered
brands in different dosages and strengths. The government controls the price of 209 generic
drugs in specified dosage forms, along with 41 APIs produced in the country and medicine
imports.
Window of Opportunity for the Pharma
Industry
In a major development, the US Food and Drug Administration approved Square Pharmaceuticals and Beximco
Pharmaceuticals, the two top companies in the country, after inspecting the oral solid dosage facilities of the two
companies in Bangladesh last year. It has not only paved the way for the companies to export medicines to the US market,
which is known for stringent regulations and quality standards, but it is a game-changer for the industry as a whole.
On 6th November last year, the WTO-TRIPS Council granted the least developed countries, which include Bangladesh, an
exemption from obligations to implement patents and data protection for pharmaceutical products until 2033. The Trade-
Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) decision of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) has important
implications for the economies of all 34 least developed member countries, as the waiver provides them with an
opportunity to provide low-cost medicine to their own people, besides significant export opportunities for pharmaceutical
enterprises.
With costs low thanks to the waiver, the competitive strength of LDC producers will be enhanced in both domestic and
export markets. Producers, consumers and LDC economies in general should ideally reap substantial benefits as a result
of this decision. But the decision has particular significance for Bangladesh. According to Mustafizur Rahman, Executive
Director of the think-tank Centre for Policy Dialogue, among all the LDCs, Bangladesh is one of the few which are actually
in a position to reap the benefits of this decision.
The patent exemption means the local pharmaceuticals sector is set to register a compound annual growth rate of 10% in
terms of local curreny and 8.9% in terms of USD, said London-based industry analyst firm BMI Research. The report added
that local firms that will benefit include key players such as Beximco, Square and Eskayef. Muktadir, however, looked at the
domestic benefits of the patent waiver. He stated that we will be able to provide high-quality drugs at a very low price.
Sales of generic drugs in Bangladesh will treble to BDT 30,300 crore per year by 2024, thanks in part to the extension of the
medicine patent waiver, which will make quality products more accessible. However, Bangladesh's goal of growing its
pharmaceuticals sector by becoming a key medicine exporter to frontier markets will be difficult.
Window of Opportunity For The Pharma
Industry
While there is a latent demand for medicines in the LDCs, transforming these opportunities
into revenue growth has its fair share of challenges. Distribution of medical facilities
remains skewed towards the urban economic centres, according to the BMI report. It added
that the greatest commercial opportunities for generic drugs will lie in emerging markets.
This happens as countries such as China, the Philippines and Malaysia are set to see
significant improvements in healthcare access, backed by substantial public sector
investment for the roll-out of universal healthcare.
In addition, regulatory standards will become stricter with time. This falls in line with the
broader development of the regulatory bodies in these markets.
There is growing demand for Bangladeshi medicines in Southeast Asia, Asia Pacific and
Africa. At present, around 30 Bangladeshi pharmaceutical companies export medicines to
90 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. Bangladeshi companies are now
focusing on developed markets such as Europe, Australia, Latin America and the Gulf
countries. Top companies have already started exporting to stringently regulated markets
and are getting very good responses.
Present Future
Around 80% of the world's population
consumes generic products. Moreover,
in many countries, new government
provisions, changing demographics and
lifestyle will continue to increase the use
of global generic medicines. India and
China are the major players in the world
generic market. Our country still buys
most of its raw materials from abroad.
But developments are underway, with a number of
firms now manufacturing raw materials locally. For
example, the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients
Park in Munshiganj, around 40 km from the capital,
is under construction at present. Once complete,
the park will help the sector manufacture at an
economy rate. With plans to establish around 40 API
industries inside the park, including a central
effluent treatment plant and incinerator amongst
many other facilities, Bangladesh is surely on the
road to attaining self-sufficiency and stellar export
growth in the days to come.

Pharmacists’ Satisfaction in Professional Life
in Bangladesh
(Pharma Mirror Research)
Proclamation of The Pharmacy Ordinance 1976 recognized Pharmacy as a profession in Bangladesh.
Pharmacy is the health profession that links the health sciences with the chemical sciences and it is
charged with ensuring the safe and effective use of pharmaceutical drugs [2] and Pharmacist means a
person who, for a fee, salary or other compensation paid to him or to another person on his behalf
manufactures, prepares, distributes, sells or serves any prescription for any medicine, drug or
pharmaceutical preparation.
Bangladeshi pharmacists are working in different practice settings with dominance in
pharmaceuticals manufacturing and marketing over the second highest recruiting academic sector. A
very few number of Pharmacists are engaged in research organizations and administration. Although
Clinical Pharmacy and Community Pharmacy have not breathed yet while Hospital Pharmacy is
crawling ahead in a limited settings.
The survey was run for 3 months from 5 Nov 2012 to 5 February 2013 based on Among 125
participants 107(87%) were men and 18(14%) were women, total of them 76(61%) and 49(39%)
graduated from private and public university respectively. There were 36 (29%) B.Pharm, 72 (57%)
M.Pharm and 8 (6%) pharmacists who hold M.Pharm & MBA both degree.
Forty-two percent of respondents worked in pharmaceutical manufacturing plant; 38%, in
pharmaceutical marketing; and 8%, in academic settings; 5%, in hospital pharmacy. Those in the other
category worked in research organization (2%), and (1%) in training, clinical trials, sales, indenting
firms each.

Challenges of the Pharmacist in the
Professional Sector
Job crisis in the Pharmaceutical industries: Few years ago, students of pharmacy got job during final year of their bachelor degree. The
number of pharmacy graduate increasing day by day. After that student finishing bachelor degree got job after the bachelor course. Now a
days, number of pharmacy students became so high that even
they are not getting job after their master degree. Besides, job sector for the pharmacist also increased but not sufficient. They are working
in Product Development, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Production, Marketing, Sales, Training, Regulatory Affairs, Commercial
department etc. Few years ago, many pharmaceutical company assigned chemist to perform laboratory work but now
pharmacist start to replace chemist from pharmaceutical industry. Pharmacists are also working in veterinary industries. Today new job
area for Bangladeshi pharmacist is Hospital Pharmacist and Clinical Pharmacist. Their working place is the hospital and deals with the
patients and help the doctors to prescribe medicine. Thus error in prescribing wrong medicine and miss-dose also reduced. New
opportunity in another sector is cosmetic industry. Bangladesh is a land of medicinal plants. Thus, herbal medicinal industry also
developing day by day. Some giant groups focusing their concentration in herbal industry. So, the demands of pharmacist in herbal
industry are increasing day by day. Though food is one of the important part of our daily life, one of the main cause of disease
development is food habit. But pharmacist is not part of this industry.
‘Pharmacist should develop their career in food industry. Teaching of pharmacy is increasing now days, so pharmacy students are coming
to teaching profession. Many pharmacist of Bangladesh has been migrated to different countries of the world and working there
successfully. The pharmaceutical sector of Bangladesh has developed in the manufacturing of finished pharmaceutical products; the API
and Excipients based industries have not yet remarkably advanced in this country. So, Bangladeshi Pharmacists have job scope limited to
pharmaceutical finished products manufacturing industries. At present, industrial jobs also are saturated or will saturate soon. Therefore,
getting entrance of new Pharmacists to Pharmaceutical Industries become quite tough or have narrow scope for new Pharmacists and
also the Problems to be faced for new pharmacist if having poor training, lack of in depth knowledge of fundamental concepts and practical
skills.
Eligibility Problem of Bangladeshi Pharmacists in abroad:
Eligibility challenge of Pharmacists to work in APIs and Excipients manufacturing industries:
Jobs of Pharmacists in abroad becoming tough day by day.

Conclusion & Remarks
Pharmacists have the expertise in drug management and dispensing, monitoring of drug-
drug interactions, and clinical research.
Moreover, reschedule of dosage regimen to individual patient can only ensure the rational
prescribing and use of medicines and this is the prime task of clinical pharmacists.
It is really unfortunate to mention that no pharmacists at present are doing these jobs,
because there is no position for hospital pharmacists in Bangladesh. Therefore, in every
year huge numbers of patients are suffering from different abnormalities and toxicities due
to irrational use of drugs and medicines and even many patients are dying due to drug
intoxications.
The practice of pharmacy in Bangladesh will become ever more important as in the
developed and developing country with more potent drugs coming to the market.
Pharmacy is a very important profession, which deals with the manufacturing, handing,
proper utilization, dispensing, and administration of life saving drugs.
Individuals interested in a career in industry are encouraged to research and
consider carefully the available postgraduate training program options to help
them make informed career choices with respect to the pharmaceutical industry.
Thus, the role of Pharmacists will never be ended as long as
drugs will exist in this world.
