FOOD SUPPLY
INTRODUCTION
• Food supply is a broad range of food production distribution.
• Food supply helps to meet the demand of market.
• Proper food supply helps to meet the nutrition of people
nowadays due to improper food supply there is a little
unfulfillment of a nutrition to the population.
WORLD’S POPULATION AND FOOD SUPPLY
• Ninety-seven percent of all population growth is occurring in the
poorest parts of the world.
• By 2015,23 cities will have more than 10million inhabitants, 19 of
them will be in developing countries.
WORLD FOOD SUPPLY
• Population and income are the major factors in determining food
consumption
• World food demand is growing at a rate of 2%per year 1.8% of
this because of population increase and 0.2% because of rising
income.
DIFFERENCE IN SPECIFIC COUNTRIES
• Poorest countries (Africa, Asia, and Latin America) 2.5% increase In demand,
but only a 1.9% increase in supply.
• These countries typically depend on US, Canadian and Australian grain
supplies.
FOOD PRODUCTION IS NOT THE PROBLEM FOOD DISTRIBUTION IS THE
PROBLEM.
• Inadequate infrastructure – roads,communication, fuel
• Lack of assess to scientific knowledge (research and extension)
• Government interference in market forces- wars, political, changing
government structure, corruption.
FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN
A food supply chain represents all the processes involved in the
Movement of food items from farm to the consumer, including
marketing, markets,distribution, aggregation, processing,
packaging, purchasing, preparation, resource recovery, and waste
disposal.
FOOD ISSUES AROUND THE WOLRD
• In 75 nations, per capita food production has declined over the
past 15years.
• Among the larger countries where shrinking crop land per person
threatens future food security are Nigeria,Ethiopia, and
Pakistan, all countries with weak family planning programs.
• For ex- as Nigeria‘s population grows from 111million today to a
projected 244million in 2050,its grain land per person will shrink
from 0.15hectares to 0.07heactares.
• More than 3-quarters of a billion people suffer from
malnutrition.
ISSUES
• News of starvation, deaths and farmer’s suicides from many
states.
• Stagnant agricultural production and following food availability
• Unemployment has increased from 4-8% in 10years.
IN UNDER DEVELOPED COUNTRIES
• If population grows more rapidly an
income is stagnant.
• Population increases 60%
• Income growth is 0%
• Food prices increases 90%
IN DEVELOPED COUNTRIES
• The population and food supply are equal.
• If lower population growth.
1. 74% increase in food.
2. 72% price declined.
• Income raise more than price.
FOOD SUPPLY PROGRAMMES
The government of India have launched several nutritional
programmes to tackle major problems of malnutrition prevailing in
India. Some of them are-
• Mid day meal program
• Vitamin-A prophylaxis
• Control iodine deficiency disorder
MID DAY MEAL PROGRAMME
The mid day meal programme is also known as school lunch
programme. These programme has been in operation since 1961
throughout the country. The major objective of the programme is
to attract more children for admission to schools and retain them
so that literacy improvement of children could be brought about.
VITAMIN- A PROPHYLAXIS
One of the components of the national programme of control of
blindness is to administer a single massive dose of vitamin –A daily.
Preparation orally to all pre-schools children in the community
every 6months through peripheral health workers. An evolution of
the programme has revealed a significant reduction in vitamin –A
deficiency in children.
CONTROL OF IODINE DEFICIENCY DISORDER
Nearly 145 million of people estimated to living in known goitre
endemic areas of the country. The national goitre control
programme was launched by the government of India in 1962 in
the conventional goitre belt in the himalayan region with the
objective of identification of the goitre endemic areas to supply
idolized salt in place of common salt and to asses the impact of
goitre controlled measures over a period of time.
HOW TO OVERCOME
• Reduce population growth rate.
• Invest in agriculture productivity .
• Protect soil and water resources .
• Encourage economic growth among the poorest.
