Year 8 Homework: Egyptian Animal Mummification
Due:
Animals were an enormous part of Egyptian culture, not only
in their role as food and pets, but also for religious reasons.
Animals were mummified for four main purposes—to allow
beloved pets to go on to the afterlife, to provide food in the
afterlife, to act as offerings to a particular god, and because
some were seen as physical manifestations of specific gods
that the Egyptians worshipped.
Answer the following questions (write your answers as a
coherent paragraph):
Level 4:
What were the most common Egyptian pets?
How were the pets mummified?
How would Egyptians show that they were mourning?
Level 5:
Why did Egyptians mummify their pets, what did they believe?
What did early archaeologists do with the mummified animals they found?
Level 6:
Which animals related to Egyptian gods?
What did the Romans think about Egyptian mummification?
Level 7:
Are there any stories of mummified animals linked to figures in history?
(To achieve a level 7 you must answer ALL of the questions)
Please illustrate your work and think carefully about the presentation.
