These slides are from my presentation at Stanford's Metaverse U event May 29th - 30th 2009 on web3D and the standard defining the mixed reality Metaverse.
10. Most virtual worlds are closed platforms with several that are open source. Very few support
the 3D Web open standards. Those that do include Exit Reality, New Lively (the fan built
Google Lively clone), and Vivaty.
12. Mirror worlds are another application of web3D . As more of the real world goes virtual,
these digital globes are growing in popularity. Mirror worlds allow for information and 3D
scenes to be shown in geographical context.
13. Proprietary mirror worlds include Google Earth and Microsoft’s Virtual Earth. NASA World
Wind is open source and X3D Earth is a digital globe built on the 3D Web open standard.
Mirror worlds that support standards are the only solution for governments and entities that
storing assets and information in proprietary applications are not an option for.
14. Web3D applications
Most of us are familiar with seeing 3D used on the web. The following slides are web pages
that are a collection of multiple different languages and technologies including HTML, Flash,
CSS, AJAX, JavaScript, and X3D.
15. More retail websites are starting to incorporate 3D into their sites so customers can interact
and examine products. This is an example of a fan site for the mobile computer OQO.
The 3D model here allows for multiple levels of interaction to learn about the device.
16. Architecture and Design
This project is one of several interactive 3D scenes done for Architecture For Humanity,
a non-profit organization that specializes in green sustainable design for humanitarian relief.
20. Support of the existing X3D open standard and collaborating with standards organizations
like the Web3D Consortium will accelerate the growth of the 3D Web and Metaverse.
26. All of the AR and 3D scenes in this presentation are in the
web3d open standard X3D. X3D is the “HTML” of the 3D Web
and defining standard used for mixed reality technologies. Visit
www.web3d.org for more information. Support your open
standards for the 3D Web and mixed reality Metaverse.
