Librarian:

and how to choose them.

▪ Create a concept map to
generate keywords.
English teacher:
▪ Helps the students with the
vocabulary.

DATABASES & SEARCHING
Librarian:
▪ Introduces the most suitable
databases for the research.
▪ Guides students to use databases.
Students:
▪ Find sources for the report.
English teacher:
▪ Helps the students with the
vocabulary.
▪ Helps to evaluate credibility of
sources.

▪ Workshops have become an important part of IL training for
technology students.
What we’ll do next
▪ Plan online course material for the use of English teachers.
▪ Provide training on e-resources for new English teachers.

Ecil2015 Metropolia Best Practice

Metropolia in brief  A multidisciplinary university of applied sciences, the largest in Finland  Operating out of Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa  16,500 students  2,370 Bachelor’s and 290 Master’s graduates in 2014  Staff 1,080  Four fields of study:  Culture  Business  Health Care and Social Services  Technology 22ECIL 2015
  • 3.  Workshops for 3rd year technology students.  Aim: to find quality sources for a report. Joint librarian-teacher workshops ECIL 2015 3
  • 4. Hands-on workshop in two phases Phase 1: KEYWORDS Librarian: ▪ The importance of keywords and how to choose them. Students: ▪ Create a concept map to generate keywords. English teacher: ▪ Helps the students with the vocabulary. Phase 2: DATABASES & SEARCHING Librarian: ▪ Introduces the most suitable databases for the research. ▪ Guides students to use databases. Students: ▪ Find sources for the report. English teacher: ▪ Helps the students with the vocabulary. ▪ Helps to evaluate credibility of sources. 4ECIL 2015

Librarians and English teachers – what do we have in common? ▪ Similar education backgrounds -> easy to communicate. ▪ IL training session & English classes: both separate from professional studies. ▪ Professional interests: ▪ Enhancing the quality of theses. ▪ Teaching critical evaluation skills.   • 15. Final thoughts What we learned from the survey ▪ Workshop focus should be kept on keywords & source material evaluation. ▪ Electronic resources and remote access need more promotion. What kind of impact have the workshops had? ▪ They provide students an opportunity to gain better research skills prior to thesis writing. ▪ Workshops have become an important part of IL training for technology students. What we’ll do next ▪ Plan online course material for the use of English teachers. ▪ Provide training on e-resources for new English teachers. ECIL 2015 15
