Topic #1: Refractory-metal
corrosion barrier coatings
Ref: Spores, Masse, Kimbrel, and
McLean, AIAA 2013-3849
• Description of need:
o AR has developed flight qualified propulsion systems for
the latest generation of “green” monopropellants,
namely the USAF fuel known as AF-M315E. This fuel
was developed as a replacement for the standard
monopropellant rocket fuel, hydrazine. It meets the
performance requirements of hydrazine-based systems,
but eliminates many of the environmental issues that
can occur. Because the AF-M315E can cause
corrosion of the propulsion hardware, we typically use
expensive refractory metals (such as rhenium or iridium)
as a barrier to protect the rocket engine components.
o A lower-cost corrosion barrier coating is desired
• Project objectives:
o Identify an alternative to refractory metal coatings for
corrosion protection.
• Expected Outcome:
o A set of potential solutions, with a technical justification
for each, such that they could be methodically evaluated
• Target Market:
o Space propulsion device manufacturers and users, e.g.
NASA, USAF, etc.
7. 7
Project Context:
• AR is the leading manufacturer of
space propulsion systems, and in
particular of systems using AF-
M315E
• Using innovative technology to
provide our customer’s with
superior solutions is a fundamental
part of AR’s culture
Project Importance: Refractory-metal
corrosion barrier coatings
Strategic Benefits:
• Corrosion protection is a universal
need – crossing many platforms
and domains
• Understanding corrosion protection
and potential solutions can offer a
very wide customer base
• Co-development of a novel material
or process for AR products may
lead to long-term business
Aerojet Rocketdyne Startup
• AR leads technical innovation in space propulsion. We are constantly
pushing the state of the art, leveraging our facilities and expertise
• An ideal start-up partner would have a deep knowledge of material
science relevant to this topic
