which eventually attained minor noble rank—his grandfather, a
wealthy businessman, received a baronetcy in 1806.
• The young Shelley entered Eton, a prestigious school for boys,
at the age of twelve, where he discovered the works of a
philosopher named William Godwin
• He embraced the ideals of liberty and equality espoused by
the French Revolution, and devoted his passion and persuasive
power to convincing others of the his beliefs.
• He made the personal acquaintance of William Godwin in
London, and promptly fell in love with Godwin's daughter
Mary Wollstonecraft, whom he was eventually able to marry
3. LIFE AND WORKS
• In 1822, Shelley drowned while sailing in a storm off the Italian
coast. He was not yet thirty years old.
• Central thematic concerns: beauty, the passions, nature,
political liberty, creativity
• Keats believed in beauty and aesthetics for their own sake. But
Shelley was able to believe that poetry makes people and
society better
4. ENGLAND IN 1819
An old, mad, blind, despised, and dying king,--
Princes, the dregs of their dull race, who flow
Through public scorn,--mud from a muddy spring,--
Rulers who neither see, nor feel, nor know,
But leech-like to their fainting country cling,
Till they drop, blind in blood, without a blow,--
A people starved and stabbed in the untilled field,--
An army, which liberticide and prey
Makes as a two-edged sword to all who wield,--
Golden and sanguine laws which tempt and slay;
Religion Christless, Godless--a book sealed;
A Senate,--Time's worst statute unrepealed,--
Are graves, from which a glorious Phantom may
Burst, to illumine our tempestous day.
