1. Networking Experience (complete one for each event and upload to your blog in the suitable post)
Title of the event, the date, and the venue
Sunderland University workshop (Monday 16th
January 2023) at David Puttnam Centre St peters
Who was it with?
Jay and Ian McPake lectures from Sunderland University
Information about the person/company
This was all about audio and steady cameras. The audio part was from people at Spark Radio the
person who taught us about radio was called Jay.
The steady camera part of the day was from one of the University’s teachers.
What do they do?
Jay teachers' students about radio and audio and how to improvise noises for different situations.
We also learnt that different images could make us think of noise even if it is just a plain colour
picture.
For the steady camera part of the day, Ian showed us clips from different famous movies such as
Creed, Harry Potter, and Stranger Things. He was telling us that the boxing scene in Creed was
done with a steady camera and moving it back and forward for the different fighters worked well.
He put the camera on a gimble and that allowed the camera to rotate.
What is their history in the industry?
While Jay was in university he studies in America and worked with different people and did
several types of audio recordings. He said that he would recommend studying abroad to anyone
as it made him talk to different people and learn a lot.
Ian who did the steady cameras said that there is a big demand for people to work in media. This
was because people are watching movies and TV shows on streaming platforms instead of the
cinema.

3. What have I learned?
The type of information I learnt about audio was that you do not need loads of special effects to
create the sound you want to make. Using your surroundings and equipment that you already
have can create the sound you want and could be even better.
In the steady camera workshop, I learnt that there is a lot of skill to operate these cameras. This is
because you can move these cameras up, down, and different sides. He also said that you must
keep the camera close, and it could cause you back ache which could lead to problems in the
future.
For both workshops I have learnt more about both industries and how important they are in
media. I have also learnt and realised that both distinct types of media can be worked together to
create different shots and audio.
More about the industry
These type of jobs in the industry has made me think about how many careers there are for
media, and working in film and working with cameras is a career path I would be interested in.
Potential careers in media
I have learnt that there are loads of opportunities I could go into when I leave college. This is
because for every TV show and movie they require a lot of different people to make these
projects the best. There is not just one person doing camera work, audio as there is loads of
different cameras used on sets and there are loads of different audios and sound effects that
needs to create an image in the audiences' thoughts that is realistic.
Meeting new people
I have learnt that media is such a big industry not just as a job but what teachers teach students
every day. This is a good as there is not going to be students that wants to work in the same part
of media, there is going to be students who wants to have separate roles with camera than people
who want to edit horror movies instead of reality TV.
How this information would improve my projects
This has made me realised that when I am going to do different projects I should add different
camera angles, sound effects that matches the theme of the project. This is because it would
make the project better and make it look more professional.
4. Learning new skills
The skills I have learnt is that media requires loads of different techniques to create the final
product. I have also learnt that there is more than just filming, audio and effects into creating TV
shows and movies there is a whole different class of people who do these, and no one is just the
camera person as there is more than one camera used in the different scenes.
