Abstract
‖Adventure tourism is a feature of tourism involving exploration or travel to remote areas, where
the traveller should expect the unexpected. Adventure tourism is rapidly growing in popularity as
tourists seek unusual holidays, different from the typical beach vacation. Mountaineering
expeditions, trekking, bungee jumping, rafting and rock climbing are frequently cited as an
examples of adventure tourism.‖ Adventure travel involves exploration or travel to remote exotic
areas. Any constructive activity which tests the endurance of both a person and his equipment to
its extreme limit is termed as adventure.
One of the natural products of adventure travel is a boost in Self-Confidence. Allowing ourselves
to become immersed in unknown territory allows us to immediately recognize an internal shift in
our confidence level. Each experience build more confidence, by challenging you just bit further
every time. Any time you take a risk or do something new whether it‘s as small as venturing off
your usual itinerary, or as big as embarking on an independent expedition. It presents a chance to
increase self-confidence.
The aim of this paper is to explore the self-confidence level of adve m ;nture tourist. 50
adventure tourists have been taken as a sample by accidental sampling for this study. Self-
Confidence questionnaire made by Dr. Rekha aggnihotri, has been used as a tool. To access the
effect of adventure activities run by adventure tourism for enhance of self-confidence level. The
design has been used to collect the data result show significant effect of activities run by
adventure tourism on adventure tourist.
Introduction
Adventure is an outdoor activity of sports, which involves some elements of risk and daring.
The physical fitness of the person is a pre-condition for adventure sports. Also called extreme or
action sports, adventure involves experiencing extreme heights and speed and induces the so-
called "adrenaline rush".
Adventure has added a new dimension to our tourism and future will see maximum
emphasis being laid on this touristic activity .India has a great beauty from the mighty peaks of
Himalayas to the golden sandy beaches of goa .it has a multitude of rivers and lakes and wide
deserts which provide ample chances of developing adventure tourism .the day is not far away
when adventure tourism will become one of the most important, widely accepted and viable
segment of tourism in India.

The days of traditional type of tourism are almost over and industry is preparing itself to
launch in specialization of different newer and emerging forms of tourism e.g. eco-tourism or
green tourism, rural and form tourism, wild life and tribal tourism, special interest and finer
aspects of cultural tourism and formidable of all and a form which is strongly thrusting itself all
above other is adventure tourism
Adventure involves a journey or a sustained endeavour, in which there are elements of
risk and of the unknown ,which has to be overcame by the physical skills of the individual .An
adventure is something that an individual chooses to do and ,where the involved is self –imposed
and threatens no one but himself.
The adventure tourism as active is flourishing on tourism activities. Their organization in
easy and they are exploitable for business purposes.
Adventure tourism is a form of travel in which the perception (and often the reality) of
heightened risk creates a special appeal to certain segments of the travel market. (Tourism-
Principles, Practices, Philosophies – Charles R. Goeldner, J.R. Brent Ritchie and Robert
W. McIntosh).
Adventure tourism is a special form of tourism. According to John Canning, the
fascination for the word adventure is perhaps that most people think of it as a life being lived at a
far greater intensity than normal (John Canning). Adventure activities and sports are generally
outdoor activities involving risk and excitement and are taken in conjugation with nature.
Moreover, the unpredictability of ‗nature‘ adds to the thrill and un expectancy of the adventure
activities.
Adventure, outdoor recreation and sports are the most rapidly growing components of
modern tourism. Adventure tourism is mainly seen as thrilling activities tourism and activity
based tourism, such as mountaineering, trekking, sailing, white water rafting, angling, ballooning,
parachuting, and so on. Adventure tourism is becoming quite a rage with the younger generation,
who wants to venture into and experience the unknown adventure world.
We need to get to the heart of what we mean by Adventure if we are to understand both what
makes adventure tourism distinctive and where it overlap with other tourism sectors. The term
adventure is evocative for many people-image and associations flood into the mind at the mention
of the world. Imagination and emotion are very much part and parcel of the adventure experience
as we will see. (Adventure tourism the new frontier-John Swarbrook.Colin Beard, Suzanne
Leckie.Gill Pomfret,2003)
Adventure travel with Self-Confidence-
Going away from home to travel has a potential to increase self-confidence. It is a process of
increasing self-knowledge where you can be a participant and a researcher of your inner process
of growth and increasing awareness. When we look back on the trips we took, what stands out in
memory as something truly valuable? Was it something that enriched life with meaning and
purpose? Was it something that required breaking our inertia and attending to situation with all
awareness and increasing self confidence?
A by-product of adventure travel is self-confidence development. The whole idea of adventure
consists of moments when we act on purpose beyond the ordinary way we think of our own
abilities. This is the reason that adventure travel has so much potential to transform us. As we
allow ourselves to immerse into unknown territory or route externally, we can immediately
recognize internal shift in self confidence.

As you leave the boundary of the familiar living, meaningful travel journey by its nature takes
you on to test and expand self-knowledge. It occurs through immediate exposure of what is
comfortable and what is not on all levels of experience.
Once the elaborate safe sanctuary of home is left behind, the only retreat you might have
available on the road is a hotel room. You're potentially walking on unknown territory that
requires vigilance and fortitude to increase self-confidence.
You increase self-confidence by whole-heartedly embracing travel experience as adventure of
your soul, where you are a hero. Any time you take risk, doing something new or attempting a
new way of doing something familiar whether it is as small as venturing off a predictable
itinerary or as big as embarking on independent expedition — risk of unknown presents a chance
to increase self-confidence and experience heroism.
Meaningful travel also has in it a chance to increase self-confidence through the immediate
feedback from a link between decision and the outcome. As many decisions that you encounter
on the road have profound effect on the depth and quality of your journey.
In ordinary life, there is a routine that serves as a structure preventing you from having a high
dynamic range of decisions: you might have a job, school, partnership or other obligations that
hold a nucleus of your life. When you travel, you may make decisions spontaneously resulting in
sheer adventure and it is alluring thrill of travel.
Travelling alone is a rapid way to increase self-confidence and expand risk tolerance. Expanding
comfort zone is in direct relation with developing self- knowledge. It could be verified by your
own recollection of a truly meaningful moment in your life and most likely you will detect that it
somehow had to do with increase of self-confidence and self-awareness development.
Conscious travel exposes our hidden thoughts and habits due to the absence of predictable
environment and security of established relationships and culture. It presents an opening into
unknown — exposes our fear of unknown and a chance to increase our tolerance for risk, making
fresh choices relying on faith to increase self-confidence. (www.travel-soul-therapy.com)
LITERATURE REVIEW-
Adventure tourism is ―one of the fastest growing sectors of the tourism industry‖ (Ewert &
Jamieson, 2003). Until the ‗90s it was given very low attention from the academic world and
very little research has been conducted (Berno T, Simmons, & Hart, 1996). Historically, it
emerged trough fishing and hunting tours and then evolved into safari, rock climbing, kayaking,
SCUBA diving and ice climbing tours (Buckley, 2002).
Adventure tourism is also seen as a very important niche segment within the special interest
tourism sector, where special interest tourism indicates ―the provision of customized leisure and
recreational experiences driven by specific interests of individuals and groups‖ (Douglas,
Douglas, & Ros, 2001). When deciding on a holiday destination, tourists are normally influenced
by different motivations, ranging from general tourism reasons as well as specific adventure
related motivations. In Adventure Tourism the desire to participate in unique activities is the
main reason to travel. Indeed, as Millington (2001) suggests, adventure tourism can be basically

The adventure tourism as active is flourishing on tourism activities. Their organization in easy and they are exploitable for business purposes. Adventure tourism is a form of travel in which the perception (and often the reality) of heightened risk creates a special appeal to certain segments of the travel market. (Tourism- Principles, Practices, Philosophies – Charles R. Goeldner, J.R. Brent Ritchie and Robert W. McIntosh). Adventure tourism is a special form of tourism. According to John Canning, the fascination for the word adventure is perhaps that most people think of it as a life being lived at a far greater intensity than normal (John Canning). Adventure activities and sports are generally outdoor activities involving risk and excitement and are taken in conjugation with nature. Moreover, the unpredictability of ‗nature‘ adds to the thrill and un expectancy of the adventure activities. Adventure, outdoor recreation and sports are the most rapidly growing components of modern tourism. Adventure tourism is mainly seen as thrilling activities tourism and activity based tourism, such as mountaineering, trekking, sailing, white water rafting, angling, ballooning, parachuting, and so on. Adventure tourism is becoming quite a rage with the younger generation, who wants to venture into and experience the unknown adventure world. We need to get to the heart of what we mean by Adventure if we are to understand both what makes adventure tourism distinctive and where it overlap with other tourism sectors. The term adventure is evocative for many people-image and associations flood into the mind at the mention of the world. Imagination and emotion are very much part and parcel of the adventure experience as we will see. (Adventure tourism the new frontier-John Swarbrook.Colin Beard, Suzanne Leckie.Gill Pomfret,2003) Adventure travel with Self-Confidence- Going away from home to travel has a potential to increase self-confidence. It is a process of increasing self-knowledge where you can be a participant and a researcher of your inner process of growth and increasing awareness. When we look back on the trips we took, what stands out in memory as something truly valuable? Was it something that enriched life with meaning and purpose? Was it something that required breaking our inertia and attending to situation with all awareness and increasing self confidence? A by-product of adventure travel is self-confidence development. The whole idea of adventure consists of moments when we act on purpose beyond the ordinary way we think of our own abilities. This is the reason that adventure travel has so much potential to transform us. As we allow ourselves to immerse into unknown territory or route externally, we can immediately recognize internal shift in self confidence.

International Journal of Interdisciplinary Research 3 ISSN 2348-6775 (online) Vol. 01 Issue 06 Sep. 2014 As you leave the boundary of the familiar living, meaningful travel journey by its nature takes you on to test and expand self-knowledge. It occurs through immediate exposure of what is comfortable and what is not on all levels of experience. Once the elaborate safe sanctuary of home is left behind, the only retreat you might have available on the road is a hotel room. You're potentially walking on unknown territory that requires vigilance and fortitude to increase self-confidence. You increase self-confidence by whole-heartedly embracing travel experience as adventure of your soul, where you are a hero. Any time you take risk, doing something new or attempting a new way of doing something familiar whether it is as small as venturing off a predictable itinerary or as big as embarking on independent expedition — risk of unknown presents a chance to increase self-confidence and experience heroism. Meaningful travel also has in it a chance to increase self-confidence through the immediate feedback from a link between decision and the outcome. As many decisions that you encounter on the road have profound effect on the depth and quality of your journey. In ordinary life, there is a routine that serves as a structure preventing you from having a high dynamic range of decisions: you might have a job, school, partnership or other obligations that hold a nucleus of your life. When you travel, you may make decisions spontaneously resulting in sheer adventure and it is alluring thrill of travel. Travelling alone is a rapid way to increase self-confidence and expand risk tolerance. Expanding comfort zone is in direct relation with developing self- knowledge. It could be verified by your own recollection of a truly meaningful moment in your life and most likely you will detect that it somehow had to do with increase of self-confidence and self-awareness development. Conscious travel exposes our hidden thoughts and habits due to the absence of predictable environment and security of established relationships and culture. It presents an opening into unknown — exposes our fear of unknown and a chance to increase our tolerance for risk, making fresh choices relying on faith to increase self-confidence. Until the ‗90s it was given very low attention from the academic world and very little research has been conducted (Berno T, Simmons, & Hart, 1996). Historically, it emerged trough fishing and hunting tours and then evolved into safari, rock climbing, kayaking, SCUBA diving and ice climbing tours (Buckley, 2002). Adventure tourism is also seen as a very important niche segment within the special interest tourism sector, where special interest tourism indicates ―the provision of customized leisure and recreational experiences driven by specific interests of individuals and groups‖ (Douglas, Douglas, & Ros, 2001). When deciding on a holiday destination, tourists are normally influenced by different motivations, ranging from general tourism reasons as well as specific adventure related motivations. In Adventure Tourism the desire to participate in unique activities is the main reason to travel. Indeed, as Millington (2001) suggests, adventure tourism can be basically
