Course Objectives:

Multimedia Applications is giving students advanced experience in using multimedia to merge text and
graphics, as well as in editing and dubbing video and sound. Applied principles are used to analyze and
organize information, set up a design structure, and produce special visual expressions. Students will be
able to develop an interactive multimedia presentation with academic core integration.

Software used: Photoshop CS2, Photoshop Image ready, Dreamweaver, Flash MX

Grading Policy:

A                 4             80 and above             Excellent

B                 3             65-79                    Good

C                 2             50-64                    Pass

F                 0             Less then 50             Fail

I                 -             -                        Incomplete (For Thesis)

Week 1    Introduction of Multimedia, History, Terminologies and Applications
          of multimedia, hypertext and hypermedia, Characteristics of
          multimedia, Challenges for Multimedia Systems



Week 2    The key issues of multimedia systems, Desirable Features for a
          Multimedia System, Components of a Multimedia System
          Applications of multimedia, Trends in Multimedia, Multimedia
          Technologies.



Week3     Multimedia Data Representations, fonts production and word
          processing tools/ software methods etc

Week 4    History of Text, Importance of Text ,The power of Meaning, Uses of
          text in Multimedia application , Fonts and Faces, Categorization of
          Typefaces, Font Editing & Design Tools, Using Text in Multimedia

Week 5    3D and 2D Animation/ Computerized animation Vs CEL Animation
          (Manual Animation Techniques)

Week 6    Multimedia Authoring Tools (Icon based, Time-based, Card-based
          and page based).

Week 7    Qualities of Sound, Analogue and digital sound file types,
          Digitization (Sampling) of analogue sound, Sound wave editing
          techniques (Quantization, clipping, etc)

Week 8    Multimedia Data Representations (Digital Audio), Application of
          Digital Audio, Adding sound to a multimedia project, sound sources,
          destination, Digitization of Sound, Digital Sampling, Sample Rates
          and Bit Size, sound channels, mono, stereo.

                MID TERM EXAMINATION

Week 9    Images Types (black and White, Mono, gray scale, color), Still
          images types, bitmap, vector,etc Image file types (Jpeg, BMP,
          GIFF, etc), Compressed and Uncompressed Images, Compression
          types.

Week 10   Graphics
Week 11   Video Types-Analog, digital, video codec’s. Compression and
          Decompression techniques/Software

Week 12   2D/3D Drawing and Rendering

Week 13   Video Broadcasting standards- NTSC, PAL, SECAM, HDTV, etc,
Differences between computer and Television Video.

Week 14   Multimedia on the internet, HTML, XML, animated gif’s, PNG etc
          (Animation for the web) MIME types.

Week 15   Storage Media, High performance I/O, Optical Storage, CD
          Storage, CD-DA, CD-I, CD Standards

Week 16   Multimedia Project Design Concepts
