• Before 1933, Jews had lived in Germany for about 1600
years.
• Over this time Jewish people living in German had
assimilated into the wider German culture
• One way assimilation occurred was through
intermarriage.
• When the Nazis came to power in 1933 there were 500
000 Jews living in Germany.
• A third of this group lived in Berlin, and another 40% in
other big cities.
• 60% of this group engaged in trade and commerce, 25%
in industry and manual trades, 12% in the public service
and other ‘white collar’ professions, especially law and
medicine
