This presentation discusses green information technology (GIT) and how organizations can adopt more environmentally sustainable IT practices. It defines key terms like green IT, e-waste, and global warming. The goals of green IT are outlined as reducing energy consumption, proper disposal and recycling, green design and manufacturing. Basic tips are provided like power management settings, reducing paper usage, and virtualization. Pakistan is said to lack skills and compliance in this area. The benefits mentioned are increased efficiency, cost savings, and improved reputation through corporate social responsibility. The first step is recommended to be a green IT audit.
4. Here Green is refer to “ protecting the nature
or environment sustainability ”

5. Why Companies use
Green Strategy ?
Global Warming & E-Waste Pollutions these two major
issues are going to be climbing up the Governments,
Consumers and media agenda. Therefore smart companies
use Green strategy to innovate, create value and build
competitive advantage for
Company Reputation
Operational Cost Savings
Corporate Social Responsibility
Legal Compliance
Involves Staff In Doing Something Good For The Environment.

6. What is E-waste ?
E-waste (Electronic Waste)
describes end-of-life electrical
goods such as computers,
televisions, printers, and mobile
phones etc. Each year between
20-50 million tons of e-waste is
generated worldwide, persistent
organic pollutants and heavy
metals, are released from
electronic waste, which can
easily accumulate in the human
body through the inhalation of
contaminated air

7. What is Global Warming ?
Green House Gases (GHGs)
naturally blanket of the earth
and responsible for Global
Warming (more or less stable
temperature) ,which could lead
to severe floods, droughts,
raising the sea levels and
other environmental effects .
In other words Green house
Gases (GHGs) effecting both
life and world economy.

8. How Information Technology
effect on our Environment?
• The sum of all the computers operated across the world today
accounts for more CO2 emissions than global air traffic.
• E-waste is another factor that is bothering us. 2.7% of the total
waste contaminating the environment around us is a part of e-
waste, and the problem that arises is that this waste is
continuously dumped into the surrounding without being
recycled.
• According the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the
average office worker in the US uses 10,000 sheets of copy
paper each year
• According to the Columbia University “ Guide to Green
Computing ”, if the paper used each year for personal computing
were laid end to end, it would circle the Earth more than 800
times

9. What is Green IT ?
Green IT
Green IT is the name attached to this
movement, which represents an
environmentally responsible use of
computer systems and related
resources with efficiently, effectively
and minimal or no impact on the
environment, & reduce energy
consumptions and environmental
waste.
Green IT start In 1992, when the US
Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) launched “Energy Star”, a
voluntary labeling program which was
designed to promote and recognize
energy efficiency in monitors, climate
control equipment, and other
technologies.
10. What is the Goal of Green IT?
The goal of Green IT is to increase environmental sustainability throughout the
entire Computer lifecycle along the following four complimentary paths:
Green use — reducing the energy consumption of computers and other
information systems as well as using them in an environmentally sound manner
Green disposal — refurbishing and reusing old computers and properly recycling
unwanted computers and other electronic equipment
Green design — designing energy-efficient and environmentally sound
components, computers, servers, cooling equipment, and data centers
Green manufacturing — manufacturing electronic components, computers, and
other associated subsystems with minimal impact on the environment

11. Where is Pakistan stand in
Green IT?
Unfortunately in Pakistan not having
effectual environmental legal
compliances, for that reason majority
of IT professionals unaware with this
state of art environmental IT practice
and lack of skills & expertise to
implementation of Green IT. As a
result they are unable to get the social
and economical benefits for their
organization with this sustainable IT
strategy.
Green IT
12. What to do Pakistan for
Green IT?
Pakistan goverment must be force companies to
implement environmental compliances in there
organization. Also private organization must be provide
high quality training on Green IT skills to their IT
professionals or hire qualified Green IT professionals
to help them to get maximum ROI from information
technology resources and raising the respect of their
organizations with adopting this noble technology.
Green IT
13. What is the road map to Green IT?
Develop a Green IT awareness
program.
Identify a Green IT best practices.
Identify energy conservation strategies
and practices
Reduce paper consumption.
Examine computing procurement
guidelines
Identify E-Waste disposal or recycling
procedures
Green IT
14. What is the first step for Green
Initiative ?
As a first step towards going green,
perform a thorough Green Audit. The
audit will highlight the existing state of
Green IT initiatives, provide suggestions
for improvement, and make clear the
costs of going green compared to not.
Green IT
15. What are the Benefits of
Green IT ?
Maximize energy efficiency
Reduce the use of hazardous materials such as lead
Reduce papers consumption.
Maximize recyclability of both a defunct product and any
factory waste
Improve operational efficiency,
Provide new revenue & cost saving opportunities.
Improve the company image with the help of Corporate
Social Responsibilities (CSR)

16. Turn off your computer at night so it runs only 8 hours
a day, You will reduce your energy bill by 67%
Purchase LCD screen as compare to Monitors. its use
significantly less energy and not effect on eyes.
Enable the Standby/ Sleep mode and power
management settings.
Forgo the screen saver
Review document drafts and e-mails on screen
instead of printing

17. Use Multifunction printer (Printer, Scanner , Copier and
Fax all in one machine) or Duplex Printer (Double
side printing facilities) save cost, energy and paper
consumption
Use Inkjet printer, its consume 80%-90% less energy
as compare to LaserJet Printer
Reduce E-waste, Keep your computer life at least 5
years
Use low power desktop (Thin Client) or Laptop
computer to reduce energy consumptions more than
50%.
Use Server virtualizations to enhance product
efficiency.
