• 2009: New York’s bike share program first
conceptualized in a Dept of City Planning Report:
Bike Share Opportunities in New York City
• 2010-2013: community planning and outreach to
finalize service area and select station locations
• May 2013: Citi Bike launched with 332 stations
and 6,000 bikes in the Manhattan CBD,
downtown Brooklyn and dense parts of
waterfront Brooklyn
• 2015: Additional rounds of community planning
and outreach for Phase 2 expansion
• August 2015: Citi Bike’s first expansion begins
Initial Service Area Chosen to Align with
Densest Areas of NYC
“New York City bike-share program
should focus on the city’s medium- and
high-density areas, defined here as
more than 32,000 people/square mile.
Phased expansion should be employed
to cover all these areas as phasing
would allow the program to generate
