1. Why teach PDHPE in Primary
schools?
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
(PDHPE) is an important key learning area (KLA) with in the
NSW primary school curriculum because it aims to teach and
develop student skills, decision-
making, communication, interaction, movement and problem
solving. It further increases knowledge, attitudes and values
to increase personal wellbeing.

2. Promotes physical activity!
Physical activity provides the opportunity to be active, have fun, feel good, be
healthy and express yourself. Active children are happy and healthy and more
likely to become active adults. Promoting physical activity and engaging with
students ensures:
• Emotional wellbeing
• Psychological wellbeing
• Learning & productivity
• Social skills and
• Increase in movement to reduce obesity and other major health issues.
3. Promotes making healthy lifestyle
choices
By teaching and guiding students towards appropriate healthy
behaviours, healthy food options and attitudes, students are able to make
positive and healthy lifestyle decisions and choices ultimately resulting in an
improved way of life.
4. Promotes safe living
Safe Living is concerned with the protection of students through the promotion
of safe environments and practices. By teaching and promoting safe
living, students develop an ability to act in ways that will keep themselves and
others safe from harm. Students should be taught-

5. Promotes, maintains and develops
positive social relationships
Interpersonal Relationships is concerned with developing an understanding of
the nature of relationships. By teaching students an understanding of their own
and others’ values and beliefs and how they are shaped, students develop
skills for building positive responsible relationships, and practice their
application so that they can use them effectively in their lives.
