Integumentary
A system that acts as a barrier to
protect the body from the
outside world.
Functions of the Skin
Skin- the main organ of the
integumentary system; the
largest organ of the body
• It acts as an excretory organ, a sense organ, and a
temperature regulator.
• Covers the entire body to protect body tissues
against injuries.
1. Give the general function of the
Integumentary System;
2. Enumerate the parts of the Integumentary
System;
3. What is the main organ of the Integumentary
System;
4. Give the 4 functions of the skin;
5. Give the layers of the skin.
Epidermis-the outer layer of
the skin;
• The deepest part is
called the generative
layer- generates new
cell that give rise to all
other cell layers in the
epidermis.
Melanocytes- produces melanin to
protect skin from UV rays
Dermis
-thickest layer of the skin
where the glands and
nerves are located.
• It nourishes the
epidermis.
Dermis
Dermis contains the ff:
• Oil glands- produces oil that
lubricates the skin
• Sweat gland- gland that
secretes sweat
• Hair follicles- regions where
hair grow
• Hair erector muscles-
causes goose bumps.
Dermis
Hypodermis/ subcutaneous layer
-layer that contain fats; it
insulates the body from cold;
stores energy in the form of fat
hypodermis
• Thickened epidermis designed to protect
the tips of the fingers and toes.
• Slender, flexible structure found on the
surface of the skin except the palm and
the soles of the feet.
Disease caused by the inflammation of
the oil gland.
• It’s the infection in the hair follicle or sweat
gland caused by the bacteria known as
Staphylococcus aureus.
A fungal disease of the skin of the foot
caused by a fungi named
Trichophyton.
Fungal infection caused by yeast.
A lesion of the skin caused by heat,
chemicals, electricity, or solar exposure.
Type of skin cancer that develops
in the melanocytes in the
epidermis.
• Apply sunscreen and wear long sleeves to prevent
to much exposure and absorption of the UV rays.
• Avoid too much exposure to sunlight.
• Eat fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamin
C and E.
• Drink 8 glasses of water everyday.
• Observe proper hygiene.
• Have enough sleep to allow your skin from
repairing itself.
