COLOSTRUM RESEARCH PROGRAMME
The beneficial properties of the colostrum from cows were discovered
and studied many years ago. Its immunomodulating and antioxidant
properties as well as the fact that it contains growth factors make colo-
strum a dietary supplement that could possibly affect metabolic
processes as well as inflammation and oxidative stress mechanisms.
In this context, the aim of the research programme conducted in the
Harokopio University was to evaluate:
1. The effect of the administration of co-
lostrum supplement to inflammation, oxi-
dative stress mechanisms that come
along with a football match as well as its
ability, via its effect on these mecha-
nisms, to lead to a reduction of the sym-
ptoms that occur after exercise-induced
muscle damage. Indeed it is the first dou-
ble-blind randomized clinical study, con-
trolled with a placebo of the effect of co-
lostrum on exercise-induced damage of
footballers.
2. The motor study of the change in
hormone, inflammatory, immune and
oxide reducing indices after the admi-
nistration of colostrum from cows in li-
quid and solid form in the recommen-
ded allowances suggested by the
company itself and to evaluate the sa-
fety of its administration both in solid
and liquid form.

indices after exercise. The improvement

activation of the antioxidant
enzyme glutathione peroxidase.
At this point it should be highlighted
that the value of the above mentioned
results is maximized by the fact that the
administration of colostrum took place
among young, healthy volunteers who
exercise regularly, whose margins of im-
provement were limited. This highlights
the importance of continuing the re-
search with the administration of colo-
strum in various population groups with
chronic health problems (seniors, diabe-
tics, patients with autoimmune diseases
etc.), where the possibility of improve-
ment of the health indices could be
more important.
