Probee #SciChallenge2017

This poster is a part of #SciChallenge2017 competition
As rusty patched bumble bee was placed on endangered animal species list, the awareness of dangers for bee species raises. Since all threats to the bees are not completely transparent, we have decided to put up a bee hive monitoring system capable of tracking bee population, their environment, special events, etc. The system would provide bee keepers with information on their bee population, early warning system, statistics, and other useful information.

The heart of the system is a bee counter, which counts departures and arrivals of bees, combined with sensors, measuring environmental conditions like temperature and CO2 levels. Counting provides information how often bees leave hive and come back, indicating how far they have to fly to gather pollen and mana. This would further provide at least some prediction about production of honey and hive vitality. System would send data via GSM to an Android application, which would collect and display data in a graphical manner. It would also decide if the bee keeper would need to be immediately notified about special conditions like bees freezing or leaving the hive and never returning. With the help of GSM module, the map of all hives using our bee monitoring system could be created. As honey is the main product of bees, we would be able to check the quality of honey with our monitoring system. Our monitoring system also provides connection between farmers and beekeepers since pesticides and field fertilizing need to be done at a certain time to not harm the bees.
