Il sottosuolo è un serbatoio termico dal quale estrarre calore d’inverno e al quale cederne d’estate. Tale scambio termico è possibile mediante le pompe di calore abbinate a sonde geotermiche, che assicurano un elevato grado di rendimento durante tutto l’anno con un consumo di energia elettrica limitato; è anche possibile alimentare le pompe di calore geotermiche con pannelli fotovoltaici. Lo scambio di calore con il terreno avviene tramite la sonda geotermica: il loro numero e la profondità d'installazione (da 50 a 150 metri) variano in funzione dell'energia termica richiesta. Ogni sonda è formata da una coppia di tubi in polietilene uniti a formare un circuito chiuso con un tubo di "andata" e uno di "ritorno", all'interno dei quali circola un fluido glicolato. La pompa di calore è una macchina in grado di trasferire calore da un corpo a temperatura più bassa a un corpo a temperatura più alta, che rappresenta un processo inverso rispetto a quanto avviene spontaneamente in natura, dovuto al fatto che viene fornita energia elettrica alla macchina che "pompa calore". Negli ultimi anni anche in Italia il mercato delle pompe di calore ha subito un indicativo incremento: nel 2009 si stima una potenza installata di circa 230 MW termici. Il costo d’investimento per un sistema di PCG è normalmente più caro di un sistema convenzionale di climatizzazione; tuttavia, a fronte di costi d’installazione maggiori, la gestione è nettamente più economica.

AGU Fall Meeting, 2015-12-16 A number of models for observation metadata have been developed in the earth and environmental science communities, including OGC’s Observations and Measurements (O&M), the ecosystems community’s Extensible Observation Ontology (OBOE), the W3C’s Semantic Sensor Network Ontology (SSNO), and the CUAHSI/NSF Observations Data Model v2 (ODM2). In order to combine data formalized in the various models, mappings between these must be developed. In some cases this is straightforward: since ODM2 took O&M as its starting point, their terminology is almost completely aligned. In the eco-informatics world observations are almost never made in isolation of other observations, so OBOE pays particular attention to groupings, with multiple atomic ‘Measurements’ in each oboe:Observation which does not have a result of its own and thus plays a different role to an om:Observation. And while SSN also adopted terminology from O&M, mapping is confounded by the fact that SSNO uses DOLCE as its foundation and places ssn:Observations as ‘Social Objects’ which are explicitly disjoint from ‘Events’, while O&M is formalized as part of the ISO/TC 211 harmonised (UML) model and sees om:Observations as value assignment activities. Foundational ontologies (such as BFO, GFO, UFO or DOLCE) can provide a framework for alignment, but different upper ontologies can be based in profoundly different world-views and use of incommensurate frameworks can confound rather than help. A potential resolution is provided by comparing recent studies that align SSNO and O&M, respectively, with the PROV ontology. PROV provides just three base classes: Entity, Activity and Agent. om:Observation is sub-classed from prov:Activity, while ssn:Observation is sub-classed from prov:Entity. This confirms that, despite the same name, om:Observation and ssn:Observation denote different aspects of the observation process: the observation event, and the record of the observation event, respectively. Alignment with the simple PROV classes has clarified this issue in a way that had previously proved difficult to resolve. The simple 3-class base model from PROV appears to provide just enough logic to serve as a lightweight upper ontology, particularly for workflow or process-based information.

The Lake Naivasha Basin is an important resource that continues to benefit many people. This however poses a challenge given the need to satisfy diverse interests both private and public while at them same time maintaining its ecological integrity. The issues faced include environmental degradation due to the activities in the basin, rising population pressure on resources and rapid urbanization among other factors. Issues among other things include management issues, gender issues, political issues , shortcomings in community and public involvement and resource use conflicts. There is thus need for urgent measures aimed at addressing the existing issues. This is so as to ensure proper management, equitable sharing of resources and resolve existing conflicts. This will also ensure that all stakeholders are happy while leading to sustainable utilization of its resources

Tamsyn Noble - Devon & Severn IFCA The Work of the Devon and Severn Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority in the Severn Tamsyn Noble is the recently appointed Senior Environment Officer for Devon and Severn Inshore Fisheries Authority (IFCA). Based in Bristol, Tamsyn is primarily responsible for the delivery of IFCA research objectives within the Severn area, having established survey programmes to assess the availability and use of sea fisheries resources, and habitats of conservation significance. Tamsyn graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Marine Biology and Coastal Ecology in 2005, before undertaking voluntary work in a variety of marine ecosystems, both in the UK and abroad. Following graduation from MSc Applied Ecology and Conservation in 2009, Tamsyn was recruited to the role of Marine Environmental Scientist in the offshore energy sector. During this period she worked both onshore and offshore to deliver environmental baseline and monitoring projects, and specialised in the assessment of Annex I habitats. Devon and Severn Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (D&S IFCA) was fully vested in 2011 under the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009, to provide inshore fisheries and conservation management, with an increased focus on habitats and ecosystems. The district boundary of the IFCA, which previously encompassed only the Devon coastline to six nautical miles, was substantially increased to include the Severn Estuary and Inner Bristol Channel. Following establishment of a presence in the Severn area of the district, a programme of research activities has commenced, aiming to determine the extent of commercial and recreational use of its marine resources and habitats. This presentation will focus on the role of the IFCA within the Severn area, introducing key current and future research areas, and presenting preliminary data on recreational activities.

Nick Paling's (WRT Head of Evidence & Engagement) overview presentation to the IFM- and SFCC-hosted 'Mapping Environmental Management Workshop' held in Edinburgh on the 1-2nd March 2016. To meet the growing threats to the environment and biodiversity posed by anthropogenic pressures and climate change; to make the most efficient and effective use of the limited resources available for conservation, and to fulfill our statutory conservation targets, there is now a growing imperative for conservation and fisheries management organisations to analyse and visualise spatial evidence to inform their work and to undertake landscape-scale conservation strategy development. As a result of this increased demand, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have now become a powerful and flexible tool used by many environmental scientists, ecologists and conservation biologists engaged in a wide array of work activities.

Nick Paling's (WRT Head of Evidence & Engagement) presentation on the work Westcountry Rivers Trust has been do with the University of Exeter to trial rapid, low-cost remote sensing technologies (with a specially developed smartphone app, a remote controlled drone and fine-grained Structure-from-Motion – SfM – photogrammetric modelling), and assessed the potential of this approach for targeting catchment management interventions designed to mitigate sources and pathways of diffuse agricultural pollution mobilisation at a farm/field scale. The study has also examined the benefits of using this approach compared to the use of freely available topogrpahic data obtained from Tellus SW LiDAR aerial survey (funded by NERC). Presentation given at the IFM- and SFCC-hosted 'Mapping for Environmental Management Workshop' in Edinburgh on March 2nd 2016.

Collaborative delivery of green infrastructure and water management solutions (e.g. SuDS) in the urban environment can realise multiple benefits including reduced flood risk, improved water quality and biodiversity, greater amenity and enhanced community health and well-being. In March 2016, the CaBA Urban Working Group, in collaboration with the Defra Urban Ecosystem Services Project (www.urbanwater-eco.services) and Ciria (www.ciria.org), hosted a series of workshops designed to build capacity and expertise within CaBA partnerships to help drive greater collaborative delivery within the urban environment.

The Delivering Environmental Benefits for Urban Communities Conference included a ‘show and tell’ symposium designed to meet the objectives of the Urban CaBA Sub-Group: 1) champion the Catchment Partnership approach to water management in urban areas; 2) support CaBA partnerships nationwide by helping them to build capacity, expertise and engage more effectively with stakeholders, communities, developers, funders and businesses, and 3) promote the benefits and raise awareness of partnership working in the urban environment. During this session practitioners, strategic planners and academics were given 5 minute slots to introduce their work/expertise and to signpost people to their resources or further information. These 'pitches' were divided into: 1) practical delivery of interventions; 2) strategic tools/approaches (incl. CBA, targeting, design/optioneering); 3) help and guidance for urban practitioners, and 4) engagement, communications and partnership working. Speakers will be invited to say what they have done, what their objectives were and what the outcome of the work was/is intended to be.
