P
ages for last
month’s Voice
colour
magazine were sent
to the printers prior to the shock news of the very
sad passing of our Queen…
My wife and I were in the back of a taxi in
Rome on the night Her Majesty’s death was
announced, and we were humbled by the
reaction of Romans throughout the night as
every TV inside hotels and restaurants beamed
the sad news to the Italian people.
Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, was the
most famous woman in the World - she was
known by everyone and the respect she was held
in was a reflection of over 70 years service to
the United Kingdom as their Queen.
Aged 96, our Queen incredibly worked
all the way up until her passing which was
astonishing.
Like most of our country, we all
watched the funeral ceremony and I
don’t know about you, but I was
absolutely prouder than proud in
the way our men and women of
our Armed Forces and also
Clergy carried out the whole
day – they were all
magnificent without putting a
foot wrong.
We will never see the like of
Queen Elizabeth II again – an
amazing Monarch who did her duty, day
in day out - the attendance of World
Leaders at her funeral ceremony cemented this
statement. She was a one-off!
Rest in Peace Ma’am and our nation’s people
thank you…
I hope you enjoy reading this issue of The
Voice colour magazine.

aved, after a long and difficult time our building is at last in community
ownership. A group of supporters including shareholders, village residents,
fundraisers, volunteers and their families gathered at the Kingsley Holt Centre
on Saturday the 8th October to celebrate their success.
It’s been a hard, difficult, and sometimes painful process for all involved, we must
now look forward to welcoming back old friends making new friends and making
the building a real hub for our community.
We want to thank everyone that have helped to make this happen. You have
helped to ensure that the Kingsley Holt Centre can look forward to a bright and
exciting future, safe in community ownership.
We have already made a start and will continue over the coming months to give
the building some much needed tlc. We will be renovating and modernising as
sympathetically as possible, this work is needed in order that its future can be safe
and secured. We look forward to being able to welcome everyone into the Centre in
2023, into the community shop, cafe, and function rooms.
Thank you to everyone for your patience over the coming months and for your
continued support without which, none of this would be possible.

J
CB’S popular Lakeside 5 road
race returned with a bang
with a bumper field – raising
£2,000 for children’s charity The NSPCC for it’s work
in Staffordshire.
In total more than 270 runners - including more
than 50 JCB employees - signed up for either the 2.2-
mile fun run or five-mile JCB Lakeside 5, which took
place in picturesque countryside around JCB’s World
Headquarters in Rocester, Staffordshire.
And a couple who met thanks to their love of
running romped to victory in the race. Andrew Miles,
28, won the JCB Lakeside 5 in 26 minutes and 15
seconds. Shortly after, his partner Nia Nokes, 34,
became the first lady to complete the five-mile course
in a time of 33 minutes and five seconds.
The pair who live in Stafford, and both work for
police forces in a civilian capacity, first got together
after taking part in training runs. At the other end of
the spectrum was John Hughes, of Derby, who at the
age of 82 became the oldest-ever competitor in the
race’s history, completing the 5-mile course in one
hour, seven minutes and 51 seconds.
Overall winner Andrew, who works for Cheshire
Police, said: “I didn’t come with any expectations, so it
is good feeling to come home first. It is also lovely to
be supporting a local event like this. The course is quite
challenging and at times is pretty steep, so it makes it
ideal for runners to test themselves.”
First lady Nia, who works for Staffordshire Police
and runs for City of Stoke AC, said: “It makes it extra
special that Andrew won, and I was the first female
across the line. We got together because of running, so
this is really nice.”
Also, on the starting line for the 37th annual
running of the event, were two runners who have taken
part in every race since it began. Stalwarts Charles
Bevan, 76, of Abbots Bromley, one of the event’s
founders, and Mick Grindey, 60, of Uttoxeter – both
former JCB employees – took part in the first event in
1983.
The date of the race also marked Charles’ 76th
birthday and he received a surprise birthday cake from
former JCB colleagues as he limbered up for the start
of the race. In fact, his birthday and the race even got a
mention on national radio – on Ken Bruce’s BBC Radio
2 morning show.
Former JCB Group Electrical Engineer Charles
who donned a Henry VIII outfit said: “It is just great
to be back – and what a lovely way to spend my
birthday. The surprise birthday cake was, well, the icing
on the cake!”
Event Organiser Mick said: “We are delighted to be
back with the JCB Lakeside 5 after a two-year break.
This race has been going since 1983 and there are only
three years when it hasn’t been held. Once when there
an outbreak of foot and mouth and the last two years
because of Covid. I would like to thank everyone who
has participated and helped to raise so much money.
But it would not happen at all without an army of JCB
volunteers.”
A team of JCB apprentices and
graduates supported the race as
volunteer marshals. They included
20-year-old Erin Murphy, a second
year Engineering Degree Apprentice.
Erin, who lives in Uttoxeter, said:
“This is my first experience of the
event but there is a really great
atmosphere. It is nice to volunteer for
such a good cause – and I am
definitely considering running in it
next year.”
Another young employee was JCB
Power Products Business Degree
Apprentice Ioan Evans who battled
back from a flu-like illness to take
part in the race. The 20-year-old
completed the course in 39 minutes
and 47 seconds. Ioan, who lives in
Tean and is originally from Lancashire, said: “Given I
was recovering from illness, I thought a time of around
42 minutes would be good. So, to break the 40-minute
mark is brilliant – I’m really pleased with that.”
Among the running clubs taking part were recently
formed Silverdale Running Club, based in Newcastle-
under-Lyme, staffs which sent a strong contingent.
Club member Paula Anderson, 54, of Newcastle, said:
“It’s nice to support the return of an event like this and
it really helps to be running with such a strong
contingent from the club.”
Normally an annual fixture, the event last took
place in 2019 but then had to be put on ice because of
Covid-19.

Staffordshire family hands
over company to employees
O
n the 1st of July, Pym and Wildsmith went from a family-owned business
to a 100% Employee-Owned business, making them pioneers of going
‘Employee Owned’ in the region.
Founded in 1979 by Stephen Pym and Tony Wildsmith, Pym and Wildsmith has
established itself as a leading metal finishing business in the Midlands.
The change in ownership will have a positive impact on the Bramshall-based
firm, with the leadership of the business continuing to be supported by both Sarah
Pym-Eaton and Ian Pym who will remain as directors.
The Operations Board also includes the introduction of a Managing Director
role which has been appointed to the current Operations Manager, Craig Taylor.
The business has chosen to have Indirect employee ownership in which 100% of
the shares are held collectively on behalf of employees through an employee
ownership trust.
The Founders believe employee ownership offers the best opportunities to
uphold the legacy and values of the company, whilst enhancing job security and
employee engagement. EO also allows employees to look at the bigger picture rather
than just focusing on their own role in the business.
Joining the likes of John Lewis Partnership PLC, Howden Group Holdings, and
Riverford Organic Farmers ltd, they are adding to the growing EO sector which has
doubled since 2020; in June 2020 there were 470 EO businesses and in July 2022
there were 1030.
The founders said: ‘’As a Family, we have committed our lives to this Company.
Now we want to see it continue to provide for our employee’s families, for generations
to come.’’
Pym and Wildsmith supply Specialist Metal Finishing services for blue-chip
companies. With over 40 years of experience, the company provides its customers
with shot blasting, powder coating, paint spraying, metal spraying and E-Coating.
They are now looking for people to join their growing team and become part of
their robust business strategy for growth.

Advancing
Heart of England is the region in which Uttoxeter
is assessed as part of the broader Britain In Bloom
campaign, run by the Royal Horticultural Society.
Entries in all categories are judged using the following
criteria: Horticulture, Environment and Community
and the overall aim is to make communities safe, clean
and green.
The Town Category was assessed in person by the
Heart of England In Bloom judges and using the towns
portfolio, which is submitted to the judges on judging
day. It was lovely for the volunteers to chat with the
judges and show them around the community gardens
in town.
Heart of England In Bloom judges also visited the
towns It’s Your Neighbourhood entries. This is the non-
competitive category of the RHS Britain in Bloom
Campaign, which any community group can enter to
show the judges what Bloom activities they have been
up to. From running a community garden to tidying
up an untidy area and making it an enjoyable space for
all to use (permission is always sought where
necessary).
The Parks Category was also judged in person by
the Heart of England In Bloom judges. With Uttoxeter
Cemetery retaining Gold again this year and both
Bramshall Road Park and Pennycroft Park improving
their scores this year. Pennycroft Park and Bramshall
Road Park are both managed by ESBC in conjunction
with the Friends of Bramshall Road Park.
The Bloom Committee would like to thank all of
the volunteers for their hard work and commitment,
we couldn’t have done this without you all. Thank you
also for all of the support the volunteers give us
throughout the year, from bulb planting to planting up
containers and not forgetting the amazing bike project
which was carried out by just 2 volunteers and over 30
volunteer hours. The volunteers do all of this work as
well as looking after community gardens throughout
the town. So they really are amazing!
We can’t forget our sponsors the Strawberry Garden
Centre, thank you for your continued support each
year. The Town Hall hanging baskets looked beautiful
once again this year.
A massive thank you also goes to ESBC for all of
the beautiful commercial hanging baskets, street
planting and roundabout planting.
The committee would also like to thank the local
businesses for their support through purchasing the
sponsored hanging baskets from ESBC. The hanging
baskets really brighten up the town and contribute to
the Bloom efforts. Thank you also to all of the local
businesses that took part in the Bloomin’ Best Dressed
Window Competition this year.
Thanks also goes to the local allotments for their
involvement in the judging tour, this year we were
hosted by Millfield Victory Allotment on Heath Road.
The local allotments also take part in the Uttoxeter In
Bloom Best Kept Allotment Competition. It’s always
great to get all aspects of the community involved in
Bloom activities, especially the towns allotmenteers.
Chair of the Uttoxeter In Bloom Committee,
Councillor Marie Williams said “As Chair of the
Uttoxeter in Bloom Committee I am so pleased that
Uttoxeter as a Town and all of the community gardens
individually have achieved such fantastic results. It was
also great to have the improvements made by both our
Parks recognised with these awards. The volunteers
have worked so hard this year and it is lovely to see this
reflected in the results achieved. We have also been
very touched to see some of the appreciative comments
received from local residents throughout the year. The
volunteers should be very proud of their achievements.
Congratulations to all!”
Town Mayor, Councillor Helen Headech said
“What an amazing result for the Town. I know we have
all seen and enjoyed the beautiful displays around town
this year. The volunteers are incredible and always work
so hard. I was lucky enough to be in attendance for this
year’s judging tour and the community gardens we
visited were not just beautiful and environmentally
friendly spaces but they were also community hubs for
local residents to use and enjoy. I would just like to say
a huge thank you to the volunteers for everything they
do for the town.”

Council‘well managed’
and services‘value for
money’
S
taffordshire Moorlands District Council delivers high-quality, low-cost services
that are value for money and has been well managed over a number of years
an independent review has found.
In January the Council, and its Strategic Alliance partner High Peak Borough
Council, invited a team of local government professionals to review its operations
and performance as part of the Local Government Association’s Corporate Peer
Challenge process.
The review team has now released its report which identifies the Council’s
strengths in governance and financial management, and investing in its staff and
elected members, amongst the key findings.
The report also praises the Alliance as being at the ‘forefront of creative thinking’
with a ‘clear focus on efficiency and resilience’.
Council Leader, Councillor Paul Roberts, said: “It’s important that councils to
hear from others who work in local government about the things that we do well
and where there are opportunities for improvement and that’s why we took part in
the peer review process.
“We welcome the report the team that reviewed us, and our Alliance partners
High Peak, have provided and the valuable insights it gives us.
“Our priority is to ensure the services we provide to our residents, businesses
and visitors are the best they can be - and we’ve already set out the actions we’ll take
on the back of this review to make sure they are.
“I’d like to thank everyone involved in this process, including our councillors and
staff, our partners and the reviewers themselves, for their time and support and
assure them we will use what we’ve learnt to benefit everyone in our District.”
The review report also highlights:
• The Council’s high-level understanding of the places we serve
• Our ambitious plans to be carbon neutral by 2030
• The enhanced links between the Council, communities and partners as a result
of the pandemic
• Our track-record of developing people and enabling career progression

Healthy feet
are happy feet!
T
hat’s why, at Total Foot Care our main aim is to improve the health of your
feet, and get to know what you really need from treatment. Our Practice was
first established in a small clinic on Cross Street, Cheadle in 2004. Since then
we have grown and grown and grown!!
We are now proud to deliver Podiatry services across two clinics in Cheadle and
Blythe Bridge.
We have a team of five state registered Podiatrists (this equates to over 40 years
of experience within the NHS and Private Practice) and the specialised knowledge
to deal with all types of lower limb complaints.
Most recently we have welcomed our newest Podiatrists, Megan B and Charlotte
P to the team, who have both come from specialised posts within the NHS. They
are highly qualified within their own field. We hope this expansion will generate
shorter waiting times for all our patients including home visits and acute care such
as Nail Surgery.
With change also comes new ways of working… We would like to introduce our
latest treatment for verruca’s SWIFT EMBLATION This treatment time is short,
none invasive and best of all, there is no downtime for patients. It has an 85% efficacy
rate. Historically, verrucas are tricky to treat, they are a skin virus which your own
immune system should treat, however, as they sit on the superficial epidermis, the
body can’t see the virus, consequently the average lifespan of a verruca is 5 years!
Emulation of verruca tissue wakes the immune system causing resolution. Swift
works by sending heatwaves through the verruca tissue to disperse water molecules
deep below the surface of the skin to unveil the virus to the immune system. Our
clever bodies then create the response to completely eliminate the virus.
We are all very excited to be providing this brand new treatment which will be
based at Total Foot Care, Blythe Bridge.
If you would like to come and see one of our lovely team, please go to our website
or phone 01782 398910 for a chat.

W
heelchair athlete Rich Sampson has completed his
first-ever marathon – with the backing of JCB. The
businessman finished the London Marathon
recently in a time of five hours and 55 minutes after completing his training on the
mile-long path around the lake at JCB’s World Headquarters at Rocester.
And his marathon efforts have paid off in a big way for the Back Up charity which
helped him rebuild his life after a motorbike accident which almost killed him and
left him paralysed. He has so far raised more than £6,000 for the organisation -
including a £500 donation from JCB.
Rich, 50, was on a motorcycling holiday eight years ago when he was involved in
a horrific 100mph head-on collision in northern Spain. The crash left him in a coma
for six weeks, paralysed from the chest down and facing a long uphill battle to
recover.
Rich, of Winnothdale, near Cheadle, said: “Back Up is a charity for people such
as me living with spinal cord injury; they mentored me through the worst days after
almost 10 months in hospital, and showed me that I could still have a life in a chair.
“That’s why I have such a passion for them and want to put something back; I’d
been thinking of doing a marathon before my accident, and while it was very tough,
completing the London Marathon feels like an amazing achievement considering
where I was eight years ago.”
Rich, who works full-time running his own groundworks company, added: “It’s
absolutely fantastic that JCB has chosen to support me with such a generous donation
– and it makes all the hard work worthwhile.”
Rich has set up a ‘JustGiving’ page for anyone wishing to contribute towards his

C
headle-based JCB
Earthmovers and a local
primary school have built
firm foundations for the future with the launch of a
spectacular new outdoor learning area.
The multi-purpose outdoor space at Cheadle
Primary School, which was transformed over the
holidays, has been officially opened by JCB
Earthmovers’ Operations Director Paul Wilson,
marking the company’s support of the school and its
430 children.
The company stepped in to give a makeover to The
Avenue school’s waste ground during the summer
holidays and it is now a showpiece space for children
to explore the environment, enjoy gardening, craft and
exercise sessions and take time out in a special
reflection zone.
Headteacher Debbie Breeze said: “The JCB team
has been amazing. Many of our children’s parents work
for JCB, so we were delighted when they approached
us with a view to building a closer relationship. The
new classroom is really important for the children; it
means they can enjoy the outdoors and learn so many
new things after being stuck inside during the COVID
lockdowns. We also have a number of children in
wheelchairs and with mobility issues, and it’s fully
accessible for them too.
“The area of reflection will also give our children
space to sit quietly. We have had so many children lose
a significant adult in their families in recent times, but
none more difficult than a beloved parent, and having
a dedicated space where they in particular can take
time out and reflect is so important.”
JCB Earthmovers Operations Director Paul Wilson
added: “As one of the area’s biggest employers it is
important that we support our community and
especially encourage our local youngsters to do their
best at school. Many of our employees have children
at Cheadle Primary, and of course they could well be
our future recruits.
“We visited the school for the Platinum Jubilee
celebrations and when Debbie showed us the site and
their plans for the outdoor classroom, we knew that we
could bring her vision to life quickly with our 3CX
backhoe machine and other construction contacts who
were keen to help. My PA Natasha Joyce and JCB’s
Maintenance Manager Ian Clarke set to work with the
school to make everything happen and in just the space
of a couple of months the whole project has come
together.”
JCB and primary school prove they
are in a class of their own

Borough
Council to
Freeze
Cemetery
Fees
I
n an effort to support
residents with financial
pressures, East
Staffordshire Borough Council
is freezing cemetery fees until
April 2024, with a review of
fees and charges to be carried
out in twelve months’ time.
With increased fuel and
utility bills, many families are
likely to face financial strain
this winter. Freezing cemetery
fees, whilst not alleviating
these concerns, should help
ease the stress of losing a loved
one and the financial
implications imposed as a
result.
Cllr Ray Faulkner, Cabinet
Member for Environment and
Climate Change, said: “With
the cost of living rising as a
result of current economic
conditions, the Council aims
to ensure grieving families
across the Borough do not
suffer additional hardship”.

W
hat a great day! Saturday
September 10th 2022 saw
the rebirth of the Alton
Challenge, Fun Run and Relay after a
two year interlude.
The weather was kind and the
community and runners turned out in
force to support this family event. The
challenge run is a 5 ½ mile all terrain run from The White Hart
Pub, through the Churnet Valley and beautiful Dimmingsdale.
The first runner home in the Challenge was Mark Dalkins from
Cheadle Running Club in a time of 35.37 followed by Matt
Cartwright, Derwent Runners, in a time of 37.38.
The first lady in the challenge was a local Alton Trail Runners
member, Dee Beattie, in a time of 53.00 and in second place,
Christine Loughran in 57.32.
Local Alton resident Joe Woods was the first junior home in
the Challenge race, with a time 52.04, followed by Finlay Harding
and William Hendrickx, together, in 56.03
The popular Relay race, consisting of 5 approximately 1 mile
legs, was won by five local runners, Chris Rowe, Alex Morris, Ralph
Kershal, Neil Adams and Ali Dawson. The Pub Relay trophy was
won by The White Hart Team, consisting of Pat Sowter, Andrea
Gill, Kath Elliot, Tam Bowyer and Andy Johnson. In third place
were five ladies from Uttoxeter, team name “Faster than the sofa”.
The most encouraging sight was the number of young runners
and their parents, lining up on the start line, doing their warmup
exercises, before the 2-mile Fun Run. A very promising image for
future years.
Huge congratulations to all runners, who each received one our
new, environmentally friendly medals, made out of wood. An
attractive asset to any medal collection.
The marshalling and support all along the route was excellent
and after all competitors and helpers had finished and returned to
The White Hart, there was a great atmosphere of community and
celebration, with a short presentation and thanks to all supporters
and sponsors, enhanced by delicious Staffordshire Meat Pies and
beverages from The White Hart, including the new real ale hand
pulls from Rural Brewing Company, an Alton business.
All monies raised will be donated to our two local charities,
North Staffs Mind and Moorlands HomeLink, who do tremendous
work in our community.
Thank you to all our sponsors, ACE, Beta Commercial Finance
Ltd, HRgym, The Bridge House, Vital Business Comms Ltd, Rural
Brewing Company and Hayley Plimley, our local councilor.

T
he band was formed in 1982 by Uttoxeter
singer/songwriter Kevin Hand together with
‘Chats’ Chatfield on Guitar Stu Ballantine on
Bass and Andy ‘Chop’ Lamb on Drums, and recorded
the 1st single ‘Julie and the Sealions’!n 1984 on
Distinctive records. In 86’ Ian ‘Chief Hitchens took
over the drum stool and the band signed to Upright
records releasing two highly regarded singles ‘This is
not love’ and ‘She Said’.
The following year the band changed drummer
once again with ‘Tucker’ joining as well as
producer/brass & Keyboards player Terry Edwards
(later of ‘Butterfield 8’ and ‘Gallon Drunk’) and released
the single ‘Sharon’ and the album ‘Six Lane Ends’ on
Cherry Red. During this period the band toured Britain
and Germany supporting acts as diverse as The
Higsons, Fields of the Nephilim and Robin Hitchcock,
and also appeared on Radio sessions for Janice Long,
Wendy May and Simon Mayo.
After falling out with record company Cherry Red
the band failed to find the momentum to continue, and
folded in late ‘88 , with Kevin returning to Uttoxeter,
for a well earned rest after a heavy spate of one-
nighters, and the chance to write some new material. It
was over the Christmas period that a chance meeting
with local musicians Dave Blant and Fred Hopwood
aka The Zydeco Brothers, brought about the newly
reformed band, changing direction slightly with a more
rootsier sound, with the addition of Whistle and
Accordian, culminating with appearances at the
Heineken festival, and the release of the single ‘April’,
which Steve Wright played on Radio 1, in his ‘unsigned
band’ slot in ‘92.
Shortly after, bass player Stu moved to Luxembourg
and was replaced by Jenny Cooper, quickly followed by
Ben Blant, son of Dave. In 1996, the album ‘Short
Stories’ was licensed to Scout Records of Germany, who
released the album under the name’ Big Red Kite’, as
they thought the name ‘Yeah Jazz ‘to be generically
misleading ! The follow up album ‘Songs from Biscuit
Town’ was eventually released in 2000,containing a
selection of tracks previously unavailable, recorded
between 1991 and 1998, by which time the band had
ceased to gig on a regular basis,
Yeah Jazz called it a day, some years back, but not
before creating some of the most perfectly formed pop
– rock – with – roots leanings ever committed to
quarter inch tape.
Based around the song writing of vocalist and
guitarist Kevin Hand, today his fusion of 80s- flavoured
pop mixed with roots music echoes the work of ‘ The
Beautiful South ‘ and ‘ The Smiths ‘, and certainly
retains much of it’s period charm, yet, their undeniable
spirit, best exemplified on the pseudo - country ‘ Ballad
of Lorraine and Duane’ is infectious, even now.
Sean Mcghee, Rock’n’reel Magazine
But now, in 2022 Yeah Jazz
have re-released a Ltd
edition CD of ‘Short
Stories’ with some extra
tracks to coincide with

Can you help Scarlet and Buddy
each find a loving home?
Scarlet
S
carlet was in kennels for a long while before she
gained a really wonderful home which she has
thoroughly enjoyed for almost the last 4.5 years.
A lot of time was spent building up her confidence
and getting her to trust people after an initial poor start
to life. It was a fantastic day when she was able to go to a
wonderful home. Her ‘Mum and Dad’ provided the vital
components for Scarlet, patience, lots of love and
attention and a fantastic quiet home life. She is now a
happy and confident dog.
Sadly her ‘Dad’ who she was so devoted to and respected has recently died and
she is so missing him. Her ‘Mum’ is not now well enough to care for Scarlet on her
own though. It is heart breaking for all concerned.
Scarlet is 7 years old and thought to be a Dogue De Bordeaux type X Rottie. A
beautiful, big, strong dog who needs to find an equally understanding home with
someone (or a couple) who is/are patient and extremely experienced at handling
strong dogs. She needs a quiet home where she can settle down again and enjoy a
lovely home life with a fully secure garden. A busy home with lots of people coming
and going will not suit her. The home must be pet free and child free too. If you feel
you can offer all that Scarlet requires and can spend time getting to know her please
do get in touch with Cheadle & District Animal Welfare Society. She has already
won over the girls at the private boarding kennels where she is currently. They all
enjoy walking her and she gets a fuss and cuddles from all of them which she
thoroughly enjoys. She also still enjoys walks with her regular walker of the last 5 or
6 years who thinks the world of her and she will offer advice to any new owner.
Scarlet really deserves another lovely home soon please so that she can enjoy all
the home comforts that she loved! We really don’t want her to have to get used to
kennel life again!
Cheadle & District Animal Welfare Society will offer all the support and back
up that they can to help Scarlet settle into a new home plus any ongoing support too.
Further information and photographs can be found on Scarlet’s re-homing page of
their website. www.cheadleanimalwelfare.org.uk/scarlet/
Buddy
B
uddy is a really nice 12 years old blind Jack Russell.
He coped very well around his home though and
also still loves his little walks. He is very
affectionate and loves a lap to sit on. He sits nicely in the
car when travelling too.
Buddy has been in kennels for a little while over the
summer as his owner has been in hospital. Unfortunately
he now needs to find a new home as his owner sadly
won’t be able to look after him again. Buddy deserves to
get settled into a new loving home as soon as possible so
he can get stability once more back into his life and out of kennels. He needs someone
who will be at home most of the time so he isn’t left alone much and with someone
who will give him lots of support and love.
He has been used to living in a bungalow with a nice, fully enclosed flat garden
which he enjoyed himself safely in. A similar home would be fantastic. Certainly a
safe, secure home is important. If a two storey home it must be made safe for him so
he doesn’t fall down any stairs! Further information and photographs can be found
on Buddy’s re-homing page of Cheadle & District Animal Welfare Society’s website.

ommunity and voluntary groups from Uttoxeter
will be among beneficiaries after 48 golfers took
part in the RBA Wealth Management charity
golf day.
The event, at JCB Golf and Country Club, raised
around £11,000 on the day and this was doubled to
£22,000 by St. James’s Place, of which RBA are an
Appointed Representative of.
All money raised will be split between the St. James’s
Place Charitable Foundation and We Love Uttoxeter.
The 2022 event takes fundraising through charity
golf days by RBA Wealth Management, to more than
£140,000.
We Love Uttoxeter provides support for community
and voluntary organisations in and around the
Staffordshire town.
“Our annual golf day is always a fantastic day, with
challenging but fun competition on the glorious
fairways and greens of the JCB course,” said, Andrew
Hackney of RBA Wealth Management. “Most
importantly, thanks to our golfers and sponsors, we
were able to raise funds for good causes both locally, in
our home town of Uttoxeter, and internationally.”
The St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation is the
third largest corporate foundation in the UK and has
benefitted over 4,000 charities and over 2 million people
globally.
Angela Fountain of RBA Wealth Management
thanked We Love Uttoxeter founder Ashley Brough,
who ran an auction at the golf day and the event’s
corporate sponsors, Lavin Printers, Octopus
Investments, MacMartin Marketing Agency, DPC
Accountants, Nelson’s Gin, W. Burton & Son, Moorland
Contract Group, Prism IT services, ACE Electrical
Services, Ashley James Group, St. James’s Place, Emma
Bridgewater and Fashion Parade.
We Love Uttoxeter is part of the Community
Foundation for Staffordshire. Operations officer,
Benjamin Hilton, said: “It was wonderful to see so many
local businesses coming together to support the We
Love Uttoxeter Community Fund. We are pleased to see
so many like minded people who are passionate about
giving back to their community and we would like to
thank everyone who came along.”
Competition on the course was fierce but good
humoured. The winning team was made up of Adam
Burton and Greg Peters. Second place went to Jarred
Wright and Scott Bulloch, with Rob Swotton and Giles
Lang finishing in third place.
The “Beat the Pro” winner was Ashley Knight, Greg
Peters won the nearest the pin prize and the longest
drive was struck by Michael Grice.
Based at High Street, Uttoxeter, RBA Wealth
Management has a long history of supporting good
causes in the area.
Andrew added: “Our golf day is an ever-popular
event which allows our friends and clients to meet up,
network and, of course, to fundraise. We are lucky to
have local sponsors and the support of St James’ Place
which matches every penny raised on the day.”

A
local man is celebrating after losing 5 stone
8lbs, reaching his target and improving his life
and his health.
Brian Forrester’s inspirational story backs up
research showing that people with type 2 diabetes can
improve their diabetes control by making healthy
lifestyle changes and losing weight following Slimming
World’s programme. The study polled Slimming World
members with type 2 diabetes. Of those who had been
Slimming World members for six months or more and
lost at least 10% of their body weight, more than half
(54%) said they believed they had reversed their
condition.
Brian who also suffers from rheumatoid arthritis
attends the Cheadle Slimming World group, after
joining in May this year. He says: “I was diagnosed with
type 2 diabetes in 2019 & when going for a check-up
earlier this year, my doctor told me that I seriously
needed to lose some weight”.
Given that rheumatoid arthritis affects the joints, &
that for every pound of weight we carry, we are putting
4 lbs of pressure on our knees, Brian has relieved his
knees of a massive 312 lbs of pressure!
“Being overweight impacted on so many aspects of
my life, from worrying about my health, struggling to
find clothes to fit to not being able to do simple
everyday tasks without feeling out of breath. I always
felt like I was lacking energy, and just taking the dog
for a walk every day was a trial”
“The welcome I
received from fellow
members and my
Consultant at my local
group was incredible. We
share recipes and ideas,
support each other when
the going gets tough &
are generally just there
for each other. The
motivation I get from
group has helped me stay
on track with my weight-
loss journey and I feel
like I can take on the world now. As a group we’re really close”.
With support from his doctor, Brian followed Slimming World’s Food
Optimising eating plan and swapped a typical day of full fry-up for breakfast,
sandwiches for lunch and a Chinese in the evening, followed by beer & chocolate,
for scrambled egg on toast, fruit & yogurt & one of many different meals from the
Slimming World recipe books for dinner. He says: “People think slimming means
going hungry, yet it’s not like that at all with this healthy eating plan. I love food and
it’s never once felt like I was on ‘a diet’ – I love cooking all the meals from scratch.
That’s the beauty of Food Optimising, it’s so flexible with so many foods that we can
eat and enjoy freely and recipes to choose from so you never need to go hungry. My
favourite meals are the ones I cook from scratch, using various spices to marinade
the meat. I easily tailor the plan to fit my dietary needs – all with the support of my
doctor”.
Today Brian has lost a total of 5st 8lb and enjoys daily walks alongside keeping
busy with his painting, & his new venture of decorating wooden jewellery boxes
with stunning acrylic painted designs.
Jackie, who runs the Cheadle & Tean Slimming World groups, says: “In the wake
of the lockdown & the ensuing “new normal”, we know more people than ever will
be looking for support to embrace the rest of their lives feeling happier and healthier.
Given that being overweight brings a higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19,
I’m so determined to help my members and to ensure that they don’t put their weight
losses on hold. Looking after our health is more important than ever right now, and
the changes Brian has told us about are incredible. I hope his success will inspire
other local people who’d like to lose weight, improve their health and form new
lifestyle habits to take action. Just think, if you join a Slimming World group today
you too could feel like a completely new person just like Brian.”

Enforcement Services
work with Police to
issue several Fixed
Penalty Notices
E
ast Staffordshire Borough Council’s Community and Civil Enforcement teams
continues to work on addressing a number of antisocial behaviour issues
across the Borough.
Two separate cases of fly tipping offences on Mill Stream Lane, Burton upon
Trent, have recently been identified and investigated. The Enforcement team are
shortly to issue two £400 Fixed Penalty Notices to the perpetrators, which if not
paid will lead to prosecution action.
A further four fines were issued to a number of residents after they failed to
comply with a request to stop drinking and to surrender their alcohol whilst in a
controlled drinking area. Each of the four people have been issued a £75 Fixed
Penalty Notice.
One resident was also issued a £75 Fixed Penalty Notice for the improper
disposal of a cigarette after having thrown one on the pavement.
Another major issue facing East Staffordshire is that of dog waste. In a bid to
combat the issue of irresponsible dog owners and dog waste across the Borough,
the Council is introducing dog bag dispensers in a number of local parks and open
spaces, contributing to East Staffordshire Borough Council’s effort to reduce litter
and other waste across the area.
Cllr Bernard Peters, Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing Standards,
said: “While we have seen a rise in fly tipping across the Borough, I am pleased to
see our Enforcement teams working both individually and with the police to issue
a number of Fixed Penalty Notices for fly tipping and other serious offences.
East Staffordshire Borough Council has continuously worked to tackle such
issues throughout the Borough, however, I must remind residents that they will face
fines if they are caught committing offences, such as fly tipping, littering, and that
involving dog waste.”
Reports of littering and fly tipping can be made to the Council by telephoning
01283 508306, emailing community.civil_enforcement@eaststaffsbc.gov.uk or via
the online report form on the East Staffordshire Borough Council webpage.

Lemon and Almond Cake
T
his recipe is very easy and is as
popular now with family and
friends as it always has been.
This makes one 23cm 9” round cake
25g (1oz) flaked almonds
100g (4oz) butter or soft margarine
100g (4oz) light soft brown sugar
2 eggs
Zest of 1 lemon
100g (4oz) self raising flour
Syrup:-
75g (3oz) caster sugar (I prefer golden
caster sugar)
3 - 4 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1. Preheat the oven to 180˚C. Line the
base of a 9” round sandwich tin with
greased grease proof paper. Make
sure you thoroughly grease the sides
of the tin. Tip the flaked almonds
into the tin and shake them around
so that they stick to the base and the
sides.
2. Cream together the butter and sugar
until light and fluffy. Then gradually
beat in the eggs a little at a time. Add
the lemon zest.
3. Fold in the flour until smoothly
blended and pour the mixture into
the prepared tin.
4. Bake the cake for 20-25 minutes
until it has risen and is firm to the
touch.
5. Whilst the cake is baking, prepare
the syrup. Put the caster sugar into a
bowl and mix with the lemon juice.
Leave the mixture to stand stirring
occasionally.
6. When is cake is ready and firm to the
touch, remove from the oven and
leave in the tin for a couple of
minutes, then turn out upside down
onto a wire tray. Carefully remove
the greaseproof paper.
7. Spoon the lemon syrup over the hot
cake, covering the whole surface and
allow to soak in.
This cake can be eaten either hot or
cold and keeps very well for up to a week
in a cake tin or airtight container.
Personally, I like to eat it straight out of
the oven with a good serving of vanilla
icecream or whipped cream. Hopefully
you will enjoy this cake as much as I do.
It is simplicity itself!
Karen’s Cake Corner

A
s I write, we are experiencing lovely autumnal
sunshine. It was absolutely wonderful this
morning as I drove to Cheddleton. There really
was ‘a bright golden haze on the meadow’ or at least
over the fields off Leek Road and into Wetley Rocks. I
have to announce that the puppy has landed! We
picked him up just over two weeks ago and, so far, all
is well.
It is very much like having a baby. He sleeps, eats,
plays, does his business. He sleeps, eats, and so it
continues. I do know now why women are not
designed to have babies at 63 as, I must admit, I am
rather fatigued. But all this is outweighed by the
pleasure that he’s bringing myself and my two legged
best friend. My four legged best friend isn’t too keen at
the moment. He’s still playing it very cool. I imagine
that as when you have a second child, one has to make
a big fuss of the first.
We have been heaping attention on Dylan and
today he and I enjoyed a lovely walk, in the sunshine,
along the railway line. The disused railway line I hasten
to add! We walked along a carpet of russet, yellow, gold
and copper. The trees were still full of leaves, just
starting to turn, and sunshine filtered through the
branches. A perfect October day. It has been more than
three decades since I had baby brain and now I seem
to be experiencing puppy brain, in that, the other day,
I was walking around at home with a different slipper
on each foot. I have two pairs of slippers. The following
day, I had a shoe on one foot and a slipper on the other.
So, if you see me walking in a few weeks’ time,
probably next month once the puppy has had all his
vaccinations, with two small brown dogs, one
decidedly smaller than the other, hopefully clad in the
same footwear on each foot, please stop to say hello.

new £4.3 million first school built to support a
growing local community within Uttoxeter has
opened to pupils recently. Staff at Bramshall
Meadows First School, on Ivinson Way, have welcomed
the first classes of reception pupils and nursery children
for the start of the new academic year.
Part of Uttoxeter Learning Trust, the new first
school is equipped with a nursery, a specialist
classroom, classrooms, multi-use hall, catering space,
outdoor sports pitch, play areas and car parking.
Andrea Cairns, Executive Headteacher, Bramshall
Meadows First School, said: “We are delighted to have
welcomed the first reception class pupils and nursery
children to our fantastic new school.
“Seeing the children arrive and settle in has made
for a very exciting start to
the new academic year. We
are thrilled with the new
building and facilities and
we look forward to seeing
our school community
grow.”
Overall, there are 150
places for children aged four
to nine-years-old and 26
nursery places for children
aged three.
Recently, twenty-three
reception pupils and
nursery children joined the
school, which will continue
to grow as children move up
through the year groups.
The single storey
educational facility has been built as part of a wider
plan by Staffordshire County Council to expand first
school provision in Uttoxeter.
This is due to increased demand for places from
families moving to new housing in the local area
including the Bramshall Meadows estate.
Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member for
Education Jonathan Price said: “It’s fantastic that
Bramshall Meadows will be opening its doors to pupils,
and that these pupils will be starting their school life in
a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility.
“We have a duty to ensure there are enough school
places to meet growing demand, and this latest school
in Uttoxeter has been built to accommodate children
from new nearby housing developments. I look
forward to seeing the school grow year on year.”
The project is the first to be completed in response
to the rise in demand for places within Uttoxeter.
Built by Midlands-based contractor G F Tomlinson,
the first school has been completed through
Staffordshire County Council’s capital framework.
Chris Flint, Managing Director at G F Tomlinson,
said: “It’s wonderful to celebrate the opening of
Bramshall Meadows, as it welcomes pupils to a brand-
new and high-quality learning facility.
“We’re delighted to have delivered this school,
alongside Staffordshire County Council, providing
additional school places to meet the needs of a growing
local community. We hope pupils love their new
school!”

‘Mr Frostbite’to inspire local community

M
ountaineer and motivational
speaker Nigel Vardy – known
as ‘Mr Frostbite’ – is set to host
a free inspirational evening at Uttoxeter
Leisure Centre on Friday, November 25
(7pm-9pm).
Up to 300 people of all ages will be
able to hear about the incredible
adventures of the 53-year-old at the
centre, run by Everyone Active in
partnership with East Staffordshire
Borough Council.
Vardy has climbed mountains all
over the world, raced across glaciers,
lived in tropical jungles, boiled, frozen,
fallen, sunk and even been reported
missing. He acquired the nickname, ‘Mr
Frostbite’, after an unsuccessful attempt to conquer Mount McKinley in Alaska in
1999, during which he suffered severe frostbite to his nose, fingertips, toes and heels.
The Derby-born adventurer and his two climbing partners were forced to call off
their expedition when just 300 yards from the summit.
At Uttoxeter Leisure Centre, Vardy will speak about how he dealt mentally with
his numerous injuries and how sport and exercise helped him on his journey to
recovery. Ross Williams, Everyone Active’s general manager, said: “We are honoured
to welcome Nigel to Uttoxeter Leisure Centre for what will be a fantastic evening of
entertainment for the local community.
“Nigel has lived an incredible life and his stories are an inspiration to people of
all ages, so we very much look forward to seeing him next month.
“This event is likely to fill up fast and we would encourage people to book as
soon as possible, in order to secure their place.”
Cllr Bev Ashcroft, Cabinet Member for Tourism Cultural Development for
East Staffordshire Borough Council, said: “What a great opportunity for the people
of East Staffordshire to hear the amazing stories and experiences of a fascinating
explorer.”
Spaces can be booked at reception at Uttoxeter Leisure Centre or by phoning
01283 372980.
Donations on the night are welcome and there will also be a raffle with great
prizes. All proceeds will be distributed between the British Heart Foundation and
Buxton Mountain Rescue Team, where Nigel is president.

H
ave you ever woken up with something on
your mind and it’s really bothering you and
you feel a bit lost at to how to deal with it? It is
maybe an issue you have not come across before, you
don’t have strategies to deal with it and your friends
don’t understand what you are saying when you try and
explain it, or maybe you have become isolated recently
and don’t have people around you for support? Where
can you go for guidance through your issues?
In Uttoxeter, and across Staffordshire, we have an
answer; people of all ages can access support through
the charity Your Emotional Support Services or YESS
for short. We know that things don’t just go away, we
need help to discuss them and find a solution that
enables us to move forward. YESS can help create the
tools to deal with and work through the unknown of
confusing emotions by offering the services of their
skilled and caring staff and volunteers, YESS are here
for the local community.
So, how do you get help from YESS? Simply make
contact with the team using the contact details at the
bottom of this article.
YESS offer a full range of therapy options including
one to one therapy, group work, workshops, and peer
support. This can be face to face, by telephone or
online, and unlike many support networks some
evening appointments are available for people that are
unable to access appointments during normal office
hours.
YESS currently work closely with many of our local
schools, schools are a safe place because they already
provide pastoral care within the school setting and
YESS sessions are an extension of that pastoral care as
the counsellors are specialists in the emotional and
mental health issues that face all people, including
young people.
One young person who used the service said,
“having someone to talk too, really changed my life. I
wouldn’t be here without the amazing support I
received”.
So if you or someone you care for needs help, get in
touch with YESS and become part of the solution to
your/their problem.
Like any charity, YESS needs our help to support
the continuation of their work. To get involved with
fundraising, become a business sponsor, or make a
donation please contact them to directly to discuss how
you can help them to help our local community. YESS
also want to hear from the local community about the
help and support that is required, as evidencing a need
for the services they offer enables them to attempt to
obtain funding to fulfil the needs of the community,
another reason to get in touch with this amazing
charity.

hen I was younger I worked at Lymers of
Tean where my father also worked and
when I got older Mr Peter Capewell, who
was the foreman, gave me an opportunity to go and
drive for them an Albion 6 Wheeler carrying limestone
and tarmac out to Kevin Quarry up in the Weaver Hills.
I drove mostly to the Birmingham area where there
was much building of new developments and roads
taking place I enjoyed that time very much but after a
while the quarry went slack so guess where I finished
up again!!!! Back at Hulland Gravel, again driving the
Albion and taking gravel and sand to places such as
Manchester and Liverpool… exotic or what!!
These were the times when the operators type
licencing had been put into force in the late 60’s/early
70’s so where the work was, we could pursue.
Talking about the Albion, it really proved its worth
and was very reliable but quite tiring to drive as there
was no power steering and A crash type gearbox so
double clutching was required for every gear change!
My father came with me one time for a ride to
Liverpool to take some sand to the railway sidings and
whilst there he spotted his old employer Mr Reg
Harrison from Rudyard who he drove for in the early
to mid 1960’s…
Reg was driving a very smart 6 Wheel Commer 2
stroke 22 tonner with a shiny aluminium body – Dad
made a remark that he really liked this vehicle so Reg
told Dad why don’t you come and drive for me again
and this will be your lorry!!
So Dad went back on the road, often us running
together to the same destinations, sometimes letting
me drive the Commer – they were so powerful and
fast…
So what happened next was Mr Harrison asked
Dad if I would be interested if another Commer was
purchased and I would drive it. This offer was put to
me and I agreed with great excitement. This change of
employment led on to my wife and I moving to
Rudyard to live in a bungalow down Lake Road and a
short time after this Phyllis became pregnant with our
first baby Mark…

continue to change…

P
upils attending a new £4.3 million first school in
Uttoxeter have buried a historic time capsule as
part of an official launch ceremony.
Bramshall Meadows First School, on Ivinson Way,
opened to pupils in September 2022. Now pupils and
staff have celebrated the opening of the new facility,
which is part Uttoxeter Learning Trust, with a launch
event.
The guests included representatives from Uttoxeter
Learning Trust, Staffordshire County Council and the
construction firm G F Tomlinson as well as local MP
Kate Kniveton.
During the ceremony, a time capsule containing
symbolic items from all of the children was buried in
the school grounds.
The capsule provides an insight into life in Britain
today during a momentous year which has seen the
ascension of King Charles III.
Items placed in the capsule include souvenirs from
Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, a photograph of
the staff and children, a storybook explaining how to
keep safe from Covid-19 and a Covid-19 test.
It is anticipated that the capsule will be resurrected
and opened by some of the first school’s future
generation of pupils in 25 years’ time.
A commemorative plaque was also unveiled during
the official launch celebrations held on Friday, October
14th, 2022.
Andrea Cairns, Executive Headteacher, Bramshall
Meadows First School, said: “It has been incredibly
exciting to involve our first cohort of pupils in the
official opening event.
“They enjoyed choosing the contents for the time
capsule and seeing the burial of it knowing that it will
be opened and discussed by future generations of
children.”
So far, 23 reception pupils and nursery children
joined the school, which will continue to grow as
children move up through the year groups.
Overall, there are 150 places for children aged four
to nine-years-old and 26 nursery places for children
aged three.
Facilities include a nursery, specialist classroom,
multi-use hall, catering space and general classrooms
as well as an outdoor sports pitch, play areas and car
parking.
Sidney Slater, Chair of Trustees, Uttoxeter Learning
Trust, commented: “We are delighted with the new
building and facilities, and being located in the
community of Bramshall Meadows. I would like to
thank Staffordshire County Council and G F
Tomlinson for their hard work and dedication to the
project.”
The building has been constructed by Midlands-
based contractor G F Tomlinson as part of a wider plan
by Staffordshire County Council to expand first school
provision locally.
The project is the first to open in response to the
rise in demand for places within Uttoxeter and it has
been completed through Staffordshire County
Council’s capital framework.

Live Local’s Autumn/Winter 22/23
season will be a special one: they have been
bringing exciting and awe-inspiring shows
to a village hall or community venue near
you for 30 years. To celebrate, the National
Portfolio Organisation has launched a
brand-new website - liveandlocal.org.uk.
The upcoming season begins on 1st
October. Expect professional exciting
theatre, enthralling, award-winning music
and exhilarating shows and film screenings
for all ages in community venues across
Staffordshire.
John Laidlaw MBE, Director of Live
Local said: “with Autumn fast approaching,
Live Local brightens your evenings with
an electrifying programme of theatre, film,
storytelling and live music from some of
the finest artists in the UK and beyond.
Shows take place at community venues
across the Midlands: from village halls and civic
centres, inns and social clubs, to churches and schools,
Live Local’s new season of entertainment guarantees
a great night out in
the most
picturesque
corners of the
region, right on
your doorstep.’
For the whole
family, The Nosy
Little Troll is
visiting at Foxt
Village Hall on
Friday 11th
November. This
funny
Scandinavian story
stars a tasty cheese
song, some lost
goats and a bushy
old troll with green
fingers. There’s
also a chance to meet the puppets and performer too.
The hugely talented She’Koyokh are one of
London’s musical treasures, performing the rich folk
traditions of Jewish Eastern Europe, Turkey and the
Balkans. An impressively multinational, multi-lingual
band, they perform jaunty klezmer, jazz and more.
Catch them at Tutbury Village Hall on Friday 25th
November.
If music is what you’re after, don’t miss Leon Hunt
and Jason Titley at Broughton Parish Room, Wetwood
on Friday 21st October and Tutbury Village Hall on
Saturday 22nd. This musical partnership started way
back in the early nineties and an evening in their
company is a rare treat. Playing guitar, banjo, gourd
banjo, and percussion, these old friends will most likely
confound any pre-conceived ideas you may be
harbouring as to what these instruments can (and
should) do.
There are plenty more shows to enjoy this season
including an evening of folk songs and stories with
Devon duo Harbottle Jonas and, for something a bit
different, a fast-paced, rollicking ride mixing spooky
paranoia, surreal nightmare and frantic farce - Is That
a Bolt In Your Neck?

England to return to
Derby in 2023
E
ngland return to The Incora County Ground in 2023 for
a huge Vitality IT20 against Sri Lanka on Wednesday 6
September. England have lost just once at Derby since
2017, with the ground becoming one of the premiere venues
for women’s international cricket in the country, having
hosted blockbuster clashes against India, West Indies, New
Zealand and South Africa in recent years.
Now, England take on a Sri Lanka side boasting the likes
of Chamari Athapaththu, who is ranked in the ICC’s top ten
IT20 batters and all-rounders, with almost 5,000 international
runs to her name.
The hosts will look to the top two international T20 bowlers in
the world, in Sophie Ecclestone and Derbyshire-born Sarah Glenn, as
well as the world-class talents of Katherine Brunt, Nat Sciver and Sophia
Dunkley.
Supporters can register for priority tickets at www.derbyshireccc.com.
World Cup finalists and Commonwealth Games semi-finalists, England are one of the top
international sides on the planet and this is your chance to see them in action, in front of a great crowd
and atmosphere at The Incora County Ground.
Last year’s fixtures also broke broadcast viewing figure records, and the eyes of the world will once
again be on Derby in September 2023, as England face Sri Lanka in Vitality IT20 action.
JCB has struck a major new
deal with Dawsongroup, a
leading commercial asset
supplier, for six of its revolutionary pothole fixing
machines to help tackle Britain’s nine-year backlog of
road repairs.
Dawsongroup | emc is investing in the highly
productive JCB Pothole Pro machines, which fix
potholes permanently, first time, without the need for
labour intensive repair methods or additional
expensive machinery.
The six machines, bought from dealer TC Harrison
JCB, are now being rolled out for rent or contract hire
by local authorities and contractors across the country
who urgently need to tackle the scourge of potholes as
winter approaches. Demand for the machines,
manufactured at JCB Heavy Products in Uttoxeter, is
expected to be high as the Asphalt Industry Alliance’s
(AIA) Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance
survey estimates there are £12.64 billion worth of
outstanding road repairs in England and Wales –
equating to a nine-year backlog.
Dawsongroup | emc Managing Director Glen
Carruthers said: “This is really exciting for us. The
Pothole Pro is an innovative machine which is both
time and cost-effective. Our investment gives local
authorities and contractors access to the best machines
for the job without the need for major financial outlay.
Not only is this a highly innovative addition to our
product range, but it also means that we are helping to
solve a problem that provokes many road users’
frustrations. It is also a significant milestone for
Dawsongroup as the company further expands its
extensive product range and sector diversification.”
JCB Pothole Pro Sales Manager Ben Rawding said:
“Dawsongroup’s order for six JCB Pothole Pro
machines will have a big impact on the nine-year road
repair backlog in the UK. It is our biggest order to date
for this revolutionary machine and means thousands
of miles more road will be repaired quickly and cost
effectively as we go into winter. JCB’s solution is simple
and cost effective and fixes potholes permanently, first
time and we are excited that such a major hirer has
recognised the machine’s benefits.
“City councils, large rural county councils and Tier
1 highways contractors across the UK have invested in
the Pothole Pro, and all are seeing significantly more
defects being fixed, economically, permanently and
safely. In fact, Stoke-on-Trent City Council – the first
authority to invest in the Pothole Pro – has repaired
seven years’ worth of defects in just 12 months.”
Tests with contractors and local authorities show
the JCB Pothole Pro can complete a pothole repair four
times quicker than standard methods in less than eight
minutes – equivalent to 700 potholes per month. With
a 40km/h travel speed, the machine can also rapidly
relocate between sites without additional transport
costs.
The Pothole Pro can prepare up to 250m2 of
roadway in a single shift, or 5,000m3 per month and
allows the contractor or local authority to cut the
defect, crop the edges and clean the hole with one
machine – mechanising jobs traditionally done by
pothole gangs and delivering up to a 50% cut in daily
costs. Safety is also improved as the gang does not have
to complete the hand held cutting and breaking,
eliminating the risk of hand arm vibration syndrome
(HAVS).
The JCB Pothole Pro is equipped with a modified
Simex planer, with integrated dust suppression,
mounted on the machine’s rear skid steer hitch. The
planer is 600mm wide, with up to 1.3m of side-shift
adjustment. This allows the operator to plane a full
carriageway from the kerb, without repositioning the
machine. Hydraulic tilt and depth control provide a
consistent depth for larger patches.
The machine’s TAB two-piece boom is fitted with
the JCB ‘Multi-tool’, mounted on an X12 Steelwrist tilt-
rotator. The ‘Multi-tool’ comprises of two attachments,
a dedicated hydraulic cropper and a sweeper/bucket.
The 600mm cropping tool eliminates the need for floor
saws or hydraulic breakers, providing a squared off,
clean cut to the repair area. The operator then rotates
the boom head to bring a 1.2m wide sweeper/bucket
into use, to clean up the pothole area, eliminating the
requirement for a separate sweeper truck. Material
lifted by the sweeper/bucket can be loaded directly into
a support truck for rapid removal from site.
