Background on the Global Stocktake
Article 14 of the Paris Agreement and decision 19/CMA.1
• Assess the collective progress towards achieving the purpose of the Paris Agreement and its long-
term goals
• In a comprehensive and facilitative manner, considering mitigation, adaptation and the means of
implementation and support, and in the light of equity and the best available science as well as
efforts that address the social and economic consequences and impacts of response measures
and that avert, minimize and address loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of
climate change
• First global stocktake in 2023 and every five years thereafter
• Outcome of the global stocktake shall inform Parties in updating and enhancing, in a nationally
determined manner, their actions and support in accordance with the relevant provisions of this
Agreement, as well as in enhancing international cooperation for climate action

Ongoing preparations
During the May-June 2021 session:
• Informal consultations by the Chairs of the SB on the overall framing
• Informal consultations under the SBSTA on complementing the sources of input for the GST
Progress after June:
• Issuance of a call for inputs by the SB
Chairs (14 September)
• Publication of the revised non-paper by
the SB Chairs, including revised guiding
questions (15 September)

Ongoing preparations: next steps
• Pending nomination of developing countries Co-facilitator, preparing for the Technical
Dialogue as part of the Technical Assessment
• October: informal consultations by the SB Chairs
• November, COP 26 in Glasgow: completion of the consideration of complementing the
sources of input for the GST under the SBSTA
• Following deadline for receiving inputs in February 2022, webinars to clarify methodologies
and assumptions used for the preparation of the various synthesis reports (four by the
secretariat, under the guidance of the Co-Facilitators of the Technical Dialogue and by
constituted bodies)
