NDB is a multilateral development bank established in 2015 by Brazil, Russia, India,
China and South Africa (BRICS), with a mandate to:
“mobilize resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS
and other emerging market economies and developing countries (EMDCs)
complementing the existing efforts of multilateral and regional financial institutions for
global growth and development”

Water Supply and Sanitation

11.  Project:
 Construction and upgrade of drinking water supply
system covering almost entire Manipur State
 E&S Impacts:
 clearance of existing land, vegetation or building;
generation of wastes and scraps during construction
and demolition works; community safety risks due to
accidents, where structural elements or components of
the Project are accessible to the community.
 E&S benefits and development objectives:
 provide household level water supply to urban and
rural population in the state
 enhance level of water supply as recommended by
national guidelines
 improve quality of water supplied through water
treatment
 improve operation and maintenance (O&M) of the
water supply infrastructure

12.  Project:
 enhancement of hydraulic circulation, including
rehabilitation of irrigation canals and river courses,
construction of diversion water pipelines, dredging in lakes
and wetlands, construction of sewage treatment stations
and associated interception pipelines, construction of water
pumping stations, and installation of ecological flood
retention embankments along lake shores and riverside;
 creation of vegetated buffer zones along riparian area.
 Key potential negative E&S impacts and risks:
 erosion, change of habitats, land acquisition, occupational
health and safety
 E&S benefits and development objectives:
 improved surface water supply in water-scarced Chongzuo
new downtown area
 improved water quality and connectivity
 increased wetland ecological function areas

13.  Project: upgrade of two sewage treatment facilities including
expansion of a wastewater sludge incineration plant
 Key potential negative E&S impacts and risks:
 Air emissions and noise from sludge incineration facilities due to
proximity to residential areas
 Increased pressure on receiving water bodies’ ecosystems due to
increased volume of wastewater discharge
 Hazardous chemicals used for wastewater and sludge treatment
 Mitigation measures:
 BAT-compliant flue-gas treatment systems. Emissions modelling
demonstrated compliance with air quality standards
 Treated wastewater quality will meet national and international
standards
 E&OHS management systems certified to ISO 14001, 45001
 E&S & SDG benefits:
 Reduction of untreated wastewater discharge to the environment
and the associated environmental pollution
 Reduction of the wastewater sludge disposal at landfills
