3. Reading Your Opponents
Reading the other players may be to most important trick for beginning players. You
should start your "reading" by focusing on the other players for several hands. Are
they playing tight? Do they have any physical tells? How are they playing with their
chips? When do they play with their chips? Are they watching the other players?
How are they betting and when? Making metal notes on the behavior of the other
players and taking in the results of the hands will give you the advantage as the
game goes on.
What the other players are saying can help you in determining their hand strength.
Meaningless chatter may be a sign your opponent is trying to distract you from the
game. Weak players will become predicable with their conversations. They may be
aggressive and taunting when bluffing and quite when holding a strong hand. Over
the top verbal and body language is usually a sign of a bad hand or a good hand.
Remember, when you're reading your opponents, they're reading you. Be consistent
with your body language and facial expressions. Practice your poker face in front of
a mirror. Keep your mouth shut when playing a hand. Don't give your opponents
any help deciphering your play style, if everyone folds and you win the pot, don't
show anyone your hand.

Top mistake #1. Going "all-in" early and often. Rookie players use the all-in bet
early in games to try to pick up some quick wins. It's a stupid way to lose everything
at the beginning of the game. The all-in bet can be used to get players to fold
quickly, but it should really only be used if you have a solid hand and could
possibly double your stack. Using the all-in bet wrong will end your game more
often than not.
Top mistake #2. Not betting enough. Don't be afraid to bet strong if you have a good
starting hand. If you have a good hand raise pre-flop, or bet high after the flop. Slow
playing good hands is a mistake more often than good playing because you won’t
end up winning as much money if you bet small. Betting strong will cause most
players to fold, you don't want players to stay in the hand and pick up a stronger
hand than yours. The smart players bet just the right amount to get it where only one
or two players call. In that case, your odds for winning are a lot better.
Top mistake #3. Betting too much. Rookie players make this mistake when they
have really bad hands or relay great hands. When playing a bad hand or a great
hand, they bet big trying to get the other players to fold (remember the all-in
mistake) or hoping the other players will throw away their money on the hand.
While this strategy will work on occasion, you give your opponents valuable
information on your play style and help them to play stronger against you.
Top mistake #4. Know when to fold them. Many new players fall victim to
themselves by not getting out of a hand when they should. The best poker players
are constantly watching other players, and guessing who could have better hands
than they have. Only call big bets when you know you have the best possible hand.
Don't try to bluff a bad hand by calling a big bet. Knowing the odds is key to
playing good poker.
