The Open Science Fair in Athens on September 8, 2017 aimed to promote the European Open Science Cloud by providing a platform for European data center operators, both commercial and political entities, with the overall goal of developing growth in the data center industry. The event brought together more than 50 member organizations of the European Data Centre Association.

Menelaos Sotiriou talks about innovative dissemination in the context of NUCLEUS project & theatrical workshops. Workshop title: Innovative dissemination practices & Altmetrics Workshop abstact: The goal of the workshop is to further the understanding of innovative dissemination practices in open science and their relationship with altmetrics. In the first part of the workshop, OpenUP project researchers will give an overview of an innovative dissemination framework. The framework describes good practices and gives recommendations on how to create a successful research dissemination strategy beyond traditional academic dissemination. A special focus will lie on how to reach target audiences beyond the research community (e.g. business or the general public). Participants will be able to test the framework and a toolbox based on their dissemination needs and to give feedback in a discussion that involves the perspective of all stakeholders of dissemination and assessment (researchers and research organizations, funders, policy makers, journalists, practitioners & businesses etc.). In the second part, we will present a taxonomy linking channels of dissemination and altmetrics indicators. In between, we will present best practice examples of innovative dissemination. Eloy Rodrigues, Petr Knoth & Kathleen Shearer showcase the conceptual model for this vision, as well as the role and functions of repositories within this model. Workshop title: Building a global knowledge commons - ramping up repositories to support widespread change in the ecosystem Workshop abstract: The extensive international deployment of repository systems in higher education and research institutions, as well as scholarly communities, provides the foundation for a distributed, globally networked infrastructure for scholarly communication. This distributed network of repositories can and should be a powerful tool to promote the transformation of the scholarly communication ecosystem. However, repository platforms are still using technologies and protocols designed almost twenty years ago, before the boom of the web and the dominance of Google, social networking, semantic web and ubiquitous mobile devices. In April 2016, the Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR) launched a working group to help identify new functionalities and technologies for repositories and develop a road map for their adoption. For the past several months, the group has been working to define a vision for repositories and sketch out the priority user stories and scenarios that will help guide the development of new functionalities. The results of this work will be available in the summer of 2017. This workshop will present the functionalities and technologies for the next generation of repositories and reflect on how these functionalities will be adopted into the existing software platforms. In addition, participants will discuss the important implications for the network layers, and how repositories will uniformly interact with the networks to provide value added services on top of their content. Agiatis Benardou, Caroline Sutton & Janet Remington talk about the research lifecycle in Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences Workshop title: Research lifecycles in the humanities and social sciences Workshop abstract: A host of initiatives have moved the open agenda beyond simply open access to journal articles or monographs to a consideration of the entire research lifecycle and points at which this can be opened up. Further, we are entering a second phase of open scholarship whereby the community is now seeking to link together the many scattered solutions for different pieces of the research lifecycle. Open Scholarship offers an important opportunity for scholars in the social sciences and humanities. Although open access has gained traction more recently, it is well-known that widespread adoption of and transition to open access to journals and monographs has lagged behind many other subject areas for a host of reasons. Engaging scholars in these subject areas in open scholarship more broadly offers and opportunity to approach open from a multitude of angles. However, the research lifecycle that is presented and visualized by those engaged in open science typically visualises that of a scientist working within STEM fields. This follows an expected pattern (e.g. planning, implementation, publishing, discovery and impact, preservation, re-use) or sets of patterns in the form of sub-cycles (e.g. planning cycle, project cycle, publication cycle, preservation cycle, impact). These visualisations do not align with the process of scholarly inquiry that many humanities scholars and qualitative social scientists are engaged in and risks marginalising some communities. Imagine a professor of music, who creates bits of initially unrelated compositions and harmonies, which arose out of inspiration derived from listening to a gentle brook. These might give rise to new understandings of former theories of music or push forward techniques. The aim of this workshop is to work together with scholars to identify a series of research workflows that better reflect the processes of scholarship in the humanities and social sciences. Once lifecycles are drafted, participants will identify points of potential sharing and open opportunities. These points will then be associated with current solutions and gaps will be identified. Workshop title: Towards a Policy Framework for the European Open Science Cloud Workshop abstract: The workshop provides a hands on approach in relation both to the understanding of the EU open science policies and their application by related stakeholders. It will seek to explore, propose and test different aspects of policy documents created by and for different types of stakeholders (e.g. RPOs, funders, policy makers etc) in the context of EOSC. Drawing on the work by the EOSC policy work, the workshop invites participants to bring their own policies or work on model policies to develop a simple but comprehensive policy document tailored to their needs and conforming to the EU policy and legal framework. Theoretical predictions and observational data indicate a class of sub-Neptune exoplanets may have water-rich interiors covered by hydrogen-dominated atmospheres. Provided suitable climate conditions, such planets could host surface liquid oceans. Motivated by recent JWST observations of K2-18 b, we self-consistently model the photochemistry and potential detectability of biogenic sulfur gases in the atmospheres of temperate sub-Neptune waterworlds for the first time. On Earth today, organic sulfur compounds produced by marine biota are rapidly destroyed by photochemical processes before they can accumulate to significant levels. Domagal-Goldman et al. suggest that detectable biogenic sulfur signatures could emerge in Archean-like atmospheres with higher biological production or low UV flux. In this study, we explore biogenic sulfur across a wide range of biological fluxes and stellar UV environments. Critically, the main photochemical sinks are absent on the nightside of tidally locked planets. To address this, we further perform experiments with a 3D general circulation model and a 2D photochemical model (VULCAN 2D) to simulate the global distribution of biogenic gases to investigate their terminator concentrations as seen via transmission spectroscopy. Our models indicate that biogenic sulfur gases can rise to potentially detectable levels on hydrogen-rich water worlds, but only for enhanced global biosulfur flux (20 times modern Earth’s flux). We find that it is challenging to identify DMS at 3.4 μm where it strongly overlaps with CH4, whereas it is more plausible to detect DMS and companion byproducts, ethylene (C2H4) and ethane (C2H6), in the mid-infrared between 9 and 13 μm. Context. WASP-76 b has been a recurrent subject of study since the detection of a signature in high-resolution transit spectroscopy data indicating an asymmetry between the two limbs of the planet. The existence of this asymmetric signature has been confirmed by multiple studies, but its physical origin is still under debate. In addition, it contrasts with the absence of asymmetry reported in the infrared (IR) phase curve. Aims. We provide a more comprehensive dataset of WASP-76 b with the goal of drawing a complete view of the physical processes at work in this atmosphere. In particular, we attempt to reconcile visible high-resolution transit spectroscopy data and IR broadband phase curves. Methods. We gathered 3 phase curves, 20 occultations, and 6 transits for WASP-76 b in the visible with the CHEOPS space telescope. We also report the analysis of three unpublished sectors observed by the TESS space telescope (also in the visible), which represents 34 phase curves. Results. WASP-76 b displays an occultation of 260±11 and 152±10 ppm in TESS and CHEOPS bandpasses respectively. Depending on the composition assumed for the atmosphere and the data reduction used for the IR data, we derived geometric albedo estimates that range from 0.05 ± 0.023 to 0.146 ± 0.013 and from <0.13 to 0.189 ± 0.017 in the CHEOPS and TESS bandpasses, respectively. As expected from the IR phase curves, a low-order model of the phase curves does not yield any detectable asymmetry in the visible either. However, an empirical model allowing for sharper phase curve variations offers a hint of a flux excess before the occultation, with an amplitude of ∼40 ppm, an orbital offset of ∼−30◦ , and a width of ∼20◦ . We also constrained the orbital eccentricity of WASP-76 b to a value lower than 0.0067, with a 99.7% confidence level. This result contradicts earlier proposed scenarios aimed at explaining the asymmetry observed in high-resolution transit spectroscopy. Conclusions. In light of these findings, we hypothesise that WASP-76 b could have night-side clouds that extend predominantly towards its eastern limb. At this limb, the clouds would be associated with spherical droplets or spherically shaped aerosols of an unknown species, which would be responsible for a glory effect in the visible phase curves.

Ultrasound color Doppler imaging has been routinely used for the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, enabling real-time flow visualization through the Doppler effect. Yet, its inability to provide true flow velocity vectors due to its one-dimensional detection limits its efficacy. To overcome this limitation, various VFI schemes, including multi-angle beams, speckle tracking, and transverse oscillation, have been explored, with some already available commercially. However, many of these methods still rely on autocorrelation, which poses inherent issues such as underestimation, aliasing, and the need for large ensemble sizes. Conversely, speckle-tracking-based VFI enables lateral velocity estimation but suffers from significantly lower accuracy compared to axial velocity measurements. To address these challenges, we have presented a speckle-tracking-based VFI approach utilizing multi-angle ultrafast plane wave imaging. Our approach involves estimating axial velocity components projected onto individual steered plane waves, which are then combined to derive the velocity vector. Additionally, we've introduced a VFI visualization technique with high spatial and temporal resolutions capable of tracking flow particle trajectories. Simulation and flow phantom experiments demonstrate that the proposed VFI method outperforms both speckle-tracking-based VFI and autocorrelation VFI counterparts by at least a factor of three. Furthermore, in vivo measurements on carotid arteries using the Prodigy ultrasound scanner demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach compared to existing methods, providing a more robust imaging tool for hemodynamic studies.
