           Slide Suggested Key Phrases

                            •Introduce yourself and SIFE.
•SIFE is a student run non for profit organization
•basically we help the community’s needs for free.

•“How many of you have had food?”
•SIFE is working with an organization called OliveUs that invites students to
help farmers around the world bring more food to themselves, their family and
                            their community.

 Introduction

•OliveUs was started by Nikos Theodosakis, who owns a Greek restaurant
                            called Theo’s in Penticton.
•He created a project for schools called InStill Life.
•Nikos asked us to tell you about this project to see if this is something that you
may want to do as a class.
                            •FOR STUDENT DISCUSSION
•Now who here wants to make change or a difference in the world?
•What kind of change would you like to make? Who would you like to help?
•there were some Students like yourself who also wanted to make the same
kind of change and Nikos had the idea of using art to create that change!
Slide Suggested Key Phrases

•InStill Life is a project that lets students create real change in the world.
•In this project, students create paintings of food, called still life paintings, and
then those paintings are turned into gift cards just like these.
(Handing out of InStill Life card examples)
•As you can see the artwork is on the front and a portrait of the artist and their
Explanation
               biography is on the back

•The students then sold the cards to their friends, neighbours, parents,
grandparents, and to people all around the community. The cards were also
sold in stores, the art gallery, and at Theo’s Restaurant.

•So once the cards started to sell, the class put their money together and
started lending the money to people around the world who were looking to
create change in their lives by starting a business or by growing their business .
•So the stuedents were not giving their money away.
•They were lending their money- lending the money they made to someone to
start or grow their business, and then that person in the other country,
promised to pay the money back, so that the students could help someone else
start studentsanother business. made the cards, sold the cards, and then lent
•So, or grow created a painting,
the money- to people like Joyce Dodo who lives in the South Sudan.
•Does anyone know what continent that country is in? (Africa)
•Joice has a bakery and makes these fantastic breads, that look like donuts,
and she sells them to people in her village and to travellers, thats how she
Explanation makes money to support her three children and to earn the money they need to
               go to school.
•Joice asked to borrow money to open up a bigger bread making business. The
students sent Joice some money, and then after about ten months, Joice paid
the money back, just like she promised.
•So the students lent the money, got it back after some time, and then lent it
•In their first year, the students lent money to forty different farmers and people
out again the next year to another person involved with food production.
who work in food production or who create food, like Joyce.
•What is interesting is all the people the students lend money to are having a
chance to create change in their lives and to not just be given money but be
given an opportunity to create a life that they would like to have for their family
and village. Sometimes that means a little more food, a little more comfort,
warmth, security, education, - or even just a little more time to enjoy their
               family.
Slide Suggested Key Phrases

•This is an example of a program that can be done somewhere like HERE! In
the classroom, that will have a impact on people all around the world, not just
this year but many years to come and we love the fact that they will pay us
back so we can than lend out the money out again to other people.
•Does this sound like something you would like to do as a class?
Invitation
                •DISCUSSION/ ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS?
                •Ok, lets have a VOTE

                • sometimes
                • DISCUSSION ABOUT CHANGE-invite students to dialouge about change
                • Sometimes you can create change immediately just by deciding to do
something, or by thinking about something in a new way.
Change • For instance, right now you think you are in a class room right?, NO you are
                    in a Greek Restaurant
                • Okay lets create change quickly by being in a Greek Restaurant.
                • Ok, one person from each group of four come and get a tablecloth and then
please set your table. Then get your plates out and put them in front of you.

•HAND OUT bowl of olives and put in middle of desks
•olives are a kind of a fruit, they grow on trees, and they are picked and then
soaked in a salty water to become juicy and flavourful.
Eating Olives

•Olives have been around for 6000 years so people like us have been eating
                these little fruits,
•How many of you have heard of ancient civilizations like ancient Greece,
Rome, Egypt? people who lived in ancient times ate these very same olives,
and here we are still eating these, 6000 years later, isn’t that cool?
Slide Suggested Key Phrases

Eating Olives

Project Binder Ok, let’s hand out these project pages, and let’s take a few minutes to record some
thoughts on olives and some of the other things we talked about.

So here’s what we would like you to remember from today’s food celebration.
Food connects all of us, and the InStill Life project is about connecting to the rest of the
                    world through food.
So next time we meet, we are going to begin learning about still life paintings and
getting ready to create our own still life paintings.
Explanation Any questions?
Thank you very much for joining in this celebration of food in this journey of creating
                    positive change in the world!
