Existing Products Research
– Short Cuts
• As it is a factual show, there aren't as many sound
effects and music than a drama show. However during
interviews in the episode named “cinema” they play
the music of the film in the background. It helps add to
overall enjoyment to the interview and keeps the
listener interested.
• The premise = During the emotional speaking they have
music that match's the tone and feel
Existing Products Research
• Doctor Who
– The sound effects used in the short don’t really
help in setting the scene as they are very
ambiguous. The music helps in setting a tone and
the feel of the show. It use futuristic sounds and
synths to make the music match the futuristic
style of doctor who. It also helps the listener to
realise that it is set in future
– The premise – Tell a story through sound effects
and music
Existing Products Research
• Sicario – Border Battle Scene
– The tension created by the information the
audience is given prior to the scene and the
ominous swells in the music all helps the audience
feel the same tension as the characters area
feeling. The waiting sensation created by the long
notes of the strings. Even without the visuals you
can hear the tension build up with the continues
sound effects and music

Proposal
Working Title:
The Haunting of the Black Monk Ghosts of the North East
Audience:
Who is your audience? Anyone who enjoys ghost stories and anyone from Guisborough who
want to learn about the town they live in. Age = 8 – 88 Everyone enjoys a good story and the
factual side will appeal to the older people who have a passion for history // Gender = Male and
Female // Social Status = Wouldn’t effect the enjoyment of the piece // Psychographic = People
with an interest would enjoy it, people who want to know about their town
Be very detailed; age, gender, social status, psychographic etc.
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
What is the concept for your project and what are you going to make?
Concept: Factual piece about the history of the ghost and and interview with someone who has
“seen” the ghost. Based on a podcast format with a few people and quite colloquial language. I
will include spooky background music and creepy sound effects to add to the feeling of fear
through out. To start there will be a brief intro to Guisborough then the story of the black monk
and then the interview with a person who has seen the ghost will commence.
What research did you need to conduct and how will it help you make your project?
I had to research the origin story and that was it. This will allow for a convincing story as it is
correct
Story
Black Monk – Guisborough
A monk form the 19th century that haunts the priory
gardens, the graveyard of the church and the adjacent bar
called the monk.
The monk was killed in his sleep by the people of
Guisborough because he used to sneak out and enjoy the
pubs and woman of the night but not before he hid a
chest of looted gold in the tunnels underneath the monk
bar. His sprit is said to live on to protect the gold and
scare people away from it. Nobody has found the gold so
that begs the question. Is he still haunting them?
Script
The ghosts of the north – Guisborough Edition
Intro
Oliver: Welcome to the ghosts of the north podcast and today
we have a few good stories. Connor? You have the first one.
So you tell the people about this one (Oliver 1)
Connor: Right so have any of our crew heard of Guisborough?
Well its near Middlesbrough, urm about an hour and a half
south from us (Connor 1)
Producer: I've heard of that ( Producer 1)
Oliver: Nice one Steve (Oliver 2) {hand over mic or far away}
Connor: So in the 12th century the monastery was one of the
richest in England. When it was destroyed all the riches
where taken by henry the 8th and what's left of the monastery
is absolutely beautiful, well worth going and visiting, lovely
town, lovely pla… (Connor 2)
Oliver: the ghosts (Oliver 3)
Connor: Ok so, back in the 1100s the monks used to sneak
out of the monastery via tunnels the lead out into the
surrounding fields, once they had left the monastery they
would go out to the local bars and regularly pay a visit to the
women of the streets. This went on for about 40 years and
due to the riskiness of the ventures the monks left a chest of
gold hidden in the tunnels in case anything had gone wring
and people needed silencing. Only one of the monks
remained when their wrong doings was discovered and the
people of Guisborough brutally murdered him in his sleep. It
is said that he came back to haunt the monastery and the
church's graveyard next to it. This is where it gets interesting,
on the first full moon of the year he lowers a ghostly
drawbridge over the disused moat and checks if his treasure
is there. Every time on that day many people have seen a
mysterious cloaked person roaming about the field in the
dead of night. During the rest of the year he has been spotted
moving through out the monastery grounds and setting up
card games in a bar called the black swan. I spoke to someone
who was in the church and sore a ghostly figure up in the bell
tower. As the bells started to ring he rushed up there but
nobody was there. (Connor 3)
Oliver: Ooo that’s pretty interesting (Oliver 4)
Connor: Nobody has discovered the treasure as of yet so that
asks the questions … Is the monks treasure that well hidden
or does the ghost succeed in scaring away anybody who tries
to find it. (Connor 4)
Oliver: I guess we will never know… Thanks for that story and
if anyone wants to visit Guisborough I've been told it is very
nice. Ok, for our next story we are traveling up north (Oliver

Production
Daily Reflection Day 1 – Production Of
SFX, Voice and Music
Today I gathered my sound effects and
voice recordings. I got my friend Connor
to play the main speaking role and
myself to do the other bit. This worked
well as my phone recording has dual
audio so it sounded nice and clean. For
the sound effects I used a variety of
objects such as a carrot to get a stabbing
sound and my creaky chair to create a
sound of wood creak. During the music
production I realised that the intro music
sounded a bit like the American horror
story theme tune but it works really well
Daily Reflection Day
2 – The Edit
Today I finished the audio
project. Some sound effects
like the bell tower and the rain
and thunder I had to get off the
internet. I used some vocal
enhancements for the speaking
and some pitch changes for the
sound effects that needed
them. I also used a DeNoise
tool for the speaking bits. I
used markers on the timeline
to remind myself where the
sounds effects should go
Evaluation
Research
• What were the strengths of your research?
My strengths were finding existing products to analyse,
• How did your research help your product?
It helped create a basic outline of how this style of show is set out and this helped
with laying out my audio product and what style (factual, soundscape or story)
• What were the weaknesses of your research?
One weakness was the actual analysis of the shows, this is because I'm not very good
at that kind of things
• What could you have done better/improve?
The analysis could have been done better
• What effect would this have had on your product?
I don’t think it had much effect on the finished product as the production was done
well. Also, the analysis didn’t effect the idea generation as that came solely from
listening to the existing products
Planning
• What were the strengths of your planning?
The sound effects tables and proposal was done well
• How did your planning help your product?
The tables and highlighting on the script meant it was easy to find which sound effects
went where and what words they where to be passed on
• What were the weaknesses of your planning?
One weakness was the actual script. It was not done very well as I'm not too good at
script writing and am trying to improve.
• What could you have done better/improve?
The script could have been improved with a more of a interesting aspects as I find it a
bit boring
• What effect would this have had on your product?
It would have made the overall excitement of the horror story a bit better and would
have meant the listener may not have got bored halfway through
Time Management
• Did you manage your time well?
Yes, I completed everything on time to a good standard
• Did you complete your project on time or would your products have
improved with additional time?
It may be been better with more time but then again, everything could be
improved with more time
• What would you have done if you had more time to produce your work?
I would have re-written the script and took multiple takes of the main stories
with different people to find the best one
Technical Qualities
• Compare your work to similar existing products and discuss the similarities and
differences
Mine vs The NoSleep Podcast. The two products sound similar as mine is based on the same
structure as TNSP. I have included in mine, a more conversational style where as TNSP is
more intro, Story 1, Story 2 etc. Both the stories include music and sound effects to help
enhance the listeners experience.
• Is your work technically detailed/complicated enough? What effects and techniques have
you used?
I believe it is technically detailed, I have used effects such as, DeNoiser and vocal
enhancers. I have also used cross fades to make the separate audio clips flow nicely
• How did you create your effects? Did you use any Foley methods
I used many household items to create sounds like the body stabs and the sword reveal,
which I am very happy with how they turned out. For the body stab sound I repeatedly
stabbed a carrot with a knife and for the sword pull out I ran a long metal stick along an old
curtain rail
• How did you record your audio?
I used my phone as it has dual audio input and records at a very high quality
Aural Qualities
• Does your work sound good?
I believe my audio work sounds good and is enjoyable to listen too
• Was it creative?
I think it was creative as I used layered sound effects and music to create a sense
of realism
• What aspects of your audio do you like?
I like the sound effects and intro music
• What would you improve?
I would improve the voice actors as they were the only people available in the
short time we had
• How would you improve it?
Find new actors and re-record the audio
• Discuss the strengths and weaknesses
I think my strengths in this was the production of the sound effects and the
mastering of the audio
Audience Appeal• How have you appealed to your target audience? What specific bits of content would
appeal to your target audience.
As the target audience was anyone who enjoyed horror stories I think that just the story
alone has enticed listeners. I think the gory sound effects and tense music has helped
with the overall enjoyment of the piece.

When it was destroyed all the riches where taken by henry the 8th and what's left of the monastery is absolutely beautiful, well worth going and visiting, lovely town, lovely pla… (Connor 2) Oliver: the ghosts (Oliver 3) Connor: Ok so, back in the 1100s the monks used to sneak out of the monastery via tunnels the lead out into the surrounding fields, once they had left the monastery they would go out to the local bars and regularly pay a visit to the women of the streets. This went on for about 40 years and due to the riskiness of the ventures the monks left a chest of gold hidden in the tunnels in case anything had gone wring and people needed silencing. Only one of the monks remained when their wrong doings was discovered and the people of Guisborough brutally murdered him in his sleep. It is said that he came back to haunt the monastery and the church's graveyard next to it. This is where it gets interesting, on the first full moon of the year he lowers a ghostly drawbridge over the disused moat and checks if his treasure is there. Every time on that day many people have seen a mysterious cloaked person roaming about the field in the dead of night. During the rest of the year he has been spotted moving through out the monastery grounds and setting up card games in a bar called the black swan. I spoke to someone who was in the church and sore a ghostly figure up in the bell tower. As the bells started to ring he rushed up there but nobody was there. (Connor 3) Oliver: Ooo that’s pretty interesting (Oliver 4) Connor: Nobody has discovered the treasure as of yet so that asks the questions … Is the monks treasure that well hidden or does the ghost succeed in scaring away anybody who tries to find it. (Connor 4) Oliver: I guess we will never know… Thanks for that story and if anyone wants to visit Guisborough I've been told it is very nice. Ok, for our next story we are traveling up north (Oliver 5) {Fade out last bit}

  • 16. Daily Reflection Day 1 – Production Of SFX, Voice and Music Today I gathered my sound effects and voice recordings. I got my friend Connor to play the main speaking role and myself to do the other bit. This worked well as my phone recording has dual audio so it sounded nice and clean. For the sound effects I used a variety of objects such as a carrot to get a stabbing sound and my creaky chair to create a sound of wood creak. During the music production I realised that the intro music sounded a bit like the American horror story theme tune but it works really well
  • 17. Daily Reflection Day 2 – The Edit Today I finished the audio project. Some sound effects like the bell tower and the rain and thunder I had to get off the internet. I used some vocal enhancements for the speaking and some pitch changes for the sound effects that needed them. I also used a DeNoise tool for the speaking bits. I used markers on the timeline to remind myself where the sounds effects should go
  • 19. Research • What were the strengths of your research? My strengths were finding existing products to analyse, • How did your research help your product? It helped create a basic outline of how this style of show is set out and this helped with laying out my audio product and what style (factual, soundscape or story) • What were the weaknesses of your research? One weakness was the actual analysis of the shows, this is because I'm not very good at that kind of things • What could you have done better/improve? The analysis could have been done better • What effect would this have had on your product? I don’t think it had much effect on the finished product as the production was done well. Also, the analysis didn’t effect the idea generation as that came solely from listening to the existing products
  • 20. Planning • What were the strengths of your planning? The sound effects tables and proposal was done well • How did your planning help your product? The tables and highlighting on the script meant it was easy to find which sound effects went where and what words they where to be passed on • What were the weaknesses of your planning? One weakness was the actual script. It was not done very well as I'm not too good at script writing and am trying to improve. • What could you have done better/improve? The script could have been improved with a more of a interesting aspects as I find it a bit boring • What effect would this have had on your product? It would have made the overall excitement of the horror story a bit better and would have meant the listener may not have got bored halfway through
  • 21. Time Management • Did you manage your time well? Yes, I completed everything on time to a good standard • Did you complete your project on time or would your products have improved with additional time? It may be been better with more time but then again, everything could be improved with more time • What would you have done if you had more time to produce your work? I would have re-written the script and took multiple takes of the main stories with different people to find the best one
  • 22. Technical Qualities • Compare your work to similar existing products and discuss the similarities and differences Mine vs The NoSleep Podcast. The two products sound similar as mine is based on the same structure as TNSP. I have included in mine, a more conversational style where as TNSP is more intro, Story 1, Story 2 etc. Both the stories include music and sound effects to help enhance the listeners experience. • Is your work technically detailed/complicated enough? What effects and techniques have you used? I believe it is technically detailed, I have used effects such as, DeNoiser and vocal enhancers. I have also used cross fades to make the separate audio clips flow nicely • How did you create your effects? Did you use any Foley methods I used many household items to create sounds like the body stabs and the sword reveal, which I am very happy with how they turned out. For the body stab sound I repeatedly stabbed a carrot with a knife and for the sword pull out I ran a long metal stick along an old curtain rail • How did you record your audio? I used my phone as it has dual audio input and records at a very high quality
  • 23. Aural Qualities • Does your work sound good? I believe my audio work sounds good and is enjoyable to listen too • Was it creative? I think it was creative as I used layered sound effects and music to create a sense of realism • What aspects of your audio do you like? I like the sound effects and intro music • What would you improve? I would improve the voice actors as they were the only people available in the short time we had • How would you improve it? Find new actors and re-record the audio • Discuss the strengths and weaknesses I think my strengths in this was the production of the sound effects and the mastering of the audio
  • 24. Audience Appeal• How have you appealed to your target audience? What specific bits of content would appeal to your target audience. As the target audience was anyone who enjoyed horror stories I think that just the story alone has enticed listeners. I think the gory sound effects and tense music has helped with the overall enjoyment of the piece. Fade Out Layered Sound Effects Intro Music Sound Effects Effects Different Volumes Background Music
