Through Connected Data
The rise in aging population and food related chronic conditions in the digital era creates
a vast opportunity to inspire people to maintain healthy lifestyles using technology.
A critical condition about healthy nutrition is that it must be prescribed in the context of
everyday life. Data should be used to better understand the 'soft science' of wellbeing
and emotions associated with food and personal care and direct them towards a
healthier and happier way of life.
In this paper, we’ll discuss how making sense of consumer data via artificial intelligence
can personalize nutrition, change behaviors and positively impact health and cost at
scale.

Why can’t science solve our most basic question of survival?
In many ways, it’s the simplest possible question: What should we eat?
Food surely seems like the sort of problem that science should be able to solve. 
After all, there are millions of test subjects and experiments going on every day. 
Why can’t we just measure what people do every day and run the numbers?
To solve the health and nutrition problem, a mindset shift from current dependence on
“sick care” oriented systems to predictive models, and emotionally intelligent
technologies that understand consumers (not “patients”) at the individual level, to help
them eat healthy, prevent diseases and stay well[i]
.
What Should We Eat?
Poor diet is a factor in 1 of 5 deaths around the world, according to the most
comprehensive study ever carried out on the subject [ii]
. Diet-related diseases are the
principal health burden in Europe [iii]
. About half of American adults have one or more
preventable chronic diseases, related to poor quality eating patterns [iv]
. In China, the
major causes of diseases have shifted from predominantly infectious diseases to
overweight/obesity [v]
. If this trend persists, 1 in 4 Chinese kids will be obese by 2030. [vi]
Vitamins, minerals, supplements, low gluten, low carbohydrates, low cholesterol — entire
industries have been built on the inclusion and exclusion of certain substances in our
diets. Avoiding disease is the general goal here; usually heart disease, with cancers a
close second. But peer-reviewed science that connects these various inputs to specific
outputs is surprisingly scarce. The pleasure we get from food, of course, is precisely why
we consume so much bad stuff. Today, we’ve engineered a civilization exquisitely
designed to serve us up that bad stuff in endless amounts (I’m looking at you, Ronald
and Wendy and Colonel and Taco John). We may know it’s all bad for us, but we can’t
help ourselves. Or we figure that one more scoop or slice won’t be so bad.
And it’s not just our biology, and the fast food industry, that is throwing contradictions at
us. Food goes to the heart of the two landmines of human existence, religion and
politics. There’s hardly a major faith that doesn’t stipulate what people should eat in one
form or another, whether it avoiding certain meats or only eating fish on Fridays. No
wonder we’re confused.
However, this same crisis generated a valuable opportunity for food producers, health
and wellness providers and payers, to leverage emotionally intelligent technologies to
deliver personalized experience, attract new consumers, and reduce costs[vii]
.

make them all converge with traditional healthcare[viii]

Recent years have witnessed several changes in the landscape of nutrition and health.
Nevertheless, existing nutrition solutions are fragmented and generic due to the lack of
context and real-life input.
In his acclaimed book “The Patient Will See You Now”, leading digital health advocate Dr.
Eric Topol envisions a world in which patients manage their health so effectively with
digital tools. He tells of a future where consumer technologies empower people to do
things like self-diagnose, receive customized treatment plans, and automatically track
their biometrics. People living with diabetes will be among those with the most to gain
from such a future[ix]
. Contextual awareness and AI are essential for this vision to come
to pass.
In January 2018, Herbalife’s survey in Asia Pacific showed that 1 in 3 consumers are
interested in personalized nutrition, 32% believed supplements to be necessary for
balanced nutrition, while 30% would take supplements or meal replacements to achieve
nutrition goals[x]
.
In March 2018, a study by Accenture shows that health related wearables have tripled in
two years and artificial intelligence healthcare will increase eleven times over 7 years.
Nearly half of healthcare consumers are using mobile apps to track their fitness, lifestyle
and vital signs. 90%, 72%, 38%, 41% of consumers are willing to share their wearable
health device data with their doctor, health insurance plan, their employer and
government agency, respectively [xi]
.
Nonetheless, without algorithms that leverage intrinsic, extrinsic, and real-time
data around a person’s life, personalized recommendations cannot be achieved.

Scanning the wellness/fitness landscape, the existing solutions are piecemeal
incomplete (either vitamins, supplements, sports, or beauty supplements), at times
superfluous and across the board generic.
All these apps fail to include context, biometrics, environment, and life habits of the
user. None uses voice-enabled conversation to discover the person’s profile and
preferences. Finally, it is too cumbersome to have this many apps on one’s phone and no

their presence on the websites of athletes and federations that they sponsor. CRM was
not smooth as they are not having a sole data foundation for the same user.

  • 2. The rise in aging population and food related chronic conditions in the digital era creates a vast opportunity to inspire people to maintain healthy lifestyles using technology. A critical condition about healthy nutrition is that it must be prescribed in the context of everyday life. Data should be used to better understand the 'soft science' of wellbeing and emotions associated with food and personal care and direct them towards a healthier and happier way of life. All Rights Reserved. lifedata.ai Why can’t science solve our most basic question of survival? In many ways, it’s the simplest possible question: What should we eat? Food surely seems like the sort of problem that science should be able to solve.  After all, there are millions of test subjects and experiments going on every day.  Why can’t we just measure what people do every day and run the numbers? To solve the health and nutrition problem, a mindset shift from current dependence on “sick care” oriented systems to predictive models, and emotionally intelligent technologies that understand consumers (not “patients”) at the individual level, to help them eat healthy, prevent diseases and stay well[i] .
  • 3. What Should We Eat? Poor diet is a factor in 1 of 5 deaths around the world, according to the most comprehensive study ever carried out on the subject [ii] . Diet-related diseases are the principal health burden in Europe [iii] . About half of American adults have one or more preventable chronic diseases, related to poor quality eating patterns [iv] . In China, the major causes of diseases have shifted from predominantly infectious diseases to overweight/obesity [v] . If this trend persists, 1 in 4 Chinese kids will be obese by 2030. [vi] Vitamins, minerals, supplements, low gluten, low carbohydrates, low cholesterol — entire industries have been built on the inclusion and exclusion of certain substances in our diets. Avoiding disease is the general goal here; usually heart disease, with cancers a close second. But peer-reviewed science that connects these various inputs to specific outputs is surprisingly scarce. The pleasure we get from food, of course, is precisely why we consume so much bad stuff. Today, we’ve engineered a civilization exquisitely designed to serve us up that bad stuff in endless amounts (I’m looking at you, Ronald and Wendy and Colonel and Taco John). We may know it’s all bad for us, but we can’t help ourselves. Or we figure that one more scoop or slice won’t be so bad. And it’s not just our biology, and the fast food industry, that is throwing contradictions at us. Food goes to the heart of the two landmines of human existence, religion and politics. There’s hardly a major faith that doesn’t stipulate what people should eat in one form or another, whether it avoiding certain meats or only eating fish on Fridays. No wonder we’re confused. However, this same crisis generated a valuable opportunity for food producers, health and wellness providers and payers, to leverage emotionally intelligent technologies to deliver personalized experience, attract new consumers, and reduce costs[vii] .   • 4. Recent years have witnessed several changes in the landscape of nutrition and health. Nevertheless, existing nutrition solutions are fragmented and generic due to the lack of context and real-life input. In his acclaimed book “The Patient Will See You Now”, leading digital health advocate Dr. Eric Topol envisions a world in which patients manage their health so effectively with digital tools. He tells of a future where consumer technologies empower people to do things like self-diagnose, receive customized treatment plans, and automatically track their biometrics. People living with diabetes will be among those with the most to gain from such a future[ix] . Contextual awareness and AI are essential for this vision to come to pass. In January 2018, Herbalife’s survey in Asia Pacific showed that 1 in 3 consumers are interested in personalized nutrition, 32% believed supplements to be necessary for balanced nutrition, while 30% would take supplements or meal replacements to achieve nutrition goals[x] . In March 2018, a study by Accenture shows that health related wearables have tripled in two years and artificial intelligence healthcare will increase eleven times over 7 years. Nearly half of healthcare consumers are using mobile apps to track their fitness, lifestyle and vital signs. 90%, 72%, 38%, 41% of consumers are willing to share their wearable health device data with their doctor, health insurance plan, their employer and government agency, respectively [xi] . Nonetheless, without algorithms that leverage intrinsic, extrinsic, and real-time data around a person’s life, personalized recommendations cannot be achieved. Scanning the wellness/fitness landscape, the existing solutions are piecemeal incomplete (either vitamins, supplements, sports, or beauty supplements), at times superfluous and across the board generic. All these apps fail to include context, biometrics, environment, and life habits of the user. None uses voice-enabled conversation to discover the person’s profile and preferences. Finally, it is too cumbersome to have this many apps on one’s phone and no one app that does it all[xii] .
