The document discusses raising awareness of open source intelligence (OSINT) obtained from social media. It notes that while users post a lot of information publicly, they often don't realize it can be collected and used to derive additional information legally. The authors created a program that collects and analyzes publicly available Twitter data through techniques like sentiment analysis and emoji use to demonstrate how OSINT can be used and encourage users to be more careful about sharing information online.
2. Social media usage is becoming more and more popular day by day. Especially on sites like
Facebook and Twitter, people upload massive amounts of information every day. Although
users are aware of the fact that this information will be open to all public users, they often
think that this information will stay between themselves and those who know them personally.
They think that their information has an insignificant place in all social media. However, they
are unaware that this information can be obtained, formatted, and other information can be
derived from these by using legal methods.
The aim of this project is to create a program giving examples of how to use publicly available
information in legal ways and show how it can easily be used by anyone.. As a result of this
program, it is aimed that people should be more careful about the information they share
publicly.
3. Open Source Intelligence is a method that allows us to collect
information from public platforms such as newspapers, magazines and
television. This knowledge can be stored in the virtual environment or
on paper. Can be communicated to others, reshaped and can not be
trusted. It should not be overlooked that the information to be obtained
can be turned against you with a legal usage.
5. We decided to use Twitter as our public information platform. We saw
that people are sharing a ton of information there everyday and doesn’t
seem to understand the fact that people can use them.
The purpose of the algorithms that we built are to generally collect and
reshape information and derive more information from what we already
have.
