Mark Ritchie, Director of libraries, PressReader
PressReader works with OpenAthens to build a seamless user experience, offering access to over 7,000 newspapers and magazines straight from the PressReader app. OpenAthens integrates well with the PressReader platform, giving students off-site access by logging in once using the same credentials they already use for other services at their institution. It’s one less thing to remember, and makes access easier than ever.
This presentation features real examples of how PressReader works with OpenAthens to solve the problems of institutions around the world to elevate the user experience. Because while content matters, so does the way you access it and your students want an easy way to read stories that matter to them.

Good afternoon, my name is Mark Ritchie and I am the director of libraries at PressReader in Vancouver, Canada. Over the past 12 years I have had the pleasure to work closely with thousands of libraries around the world to help make transitions from print to digital and to make global content and information more accessible to students and patrons a like.
Before I go into details as to why I am here. I would like to share a little about PressReader. As a business we have always been about one thing – connecting people with stories that matter to them. In the age of mobility, we always seek the best ways to provide content to patrons when and how they want it.
PressReader works in a number of different industries, such as hospitality, aviation, marine, and of course, libraries. Our business relationships and trusted publisher agreements, allow us put premium content in the hands of readers everywhere. At the end of the day, PressReader is a tech company, and while publishers make great content, PressReader and OpenAthens make great technology, together we are able to make content more accessible than ever!
Today, I’ll be sharing an overview how PressReader works with OpenAthens to build that seamless user experience. Because while content matters, so does the way your patrons access it.
There has been a dynamic shift in the way users expect our libraries to work. Libraries need to be in a position the eliminate inefficiencies with old user authentication models while elevating the user experience by providing a true anywhere/anytime access while delivering immersive experiences that draws users in and keeps them coming back for more.
The Question consistently being asked by libraries is, “How do we remove existing technical inefficiencies to ensure our patrons have reliable anywhere/anytime access to the resources available in a way that makes sense to them.”
For most organizations, this is not a seamless process as it might involve bringing in multiple shareholders into technology projects while constantly coordinating the set-up and maintenance of traditional authentication methods. Beyond coordinating the technicalities, it may also involve heavy financial and logistical commitments, simply put, it is not sustainable to provide a suite of authentication methods when you can provide a single sign-on solution.
As libraries and librarians, you also know that it’s extremely difficult, if not impossible to provide enough content to please everyone, let alone delivering content to patrons so they can enjoy what they want, when they want and how they want.
Our business teams at PressReader continue to work hard on implementing strategies to help libraries provide better value to their patrons. Better value, does not only imply growing our collection of leading publications, but it also means partnering with innovators such as OpenAthens to provide a seamless user experience as well as a true anywhere, anytime access to our mutual end-users.
OpenAthens provides a single sign-on, identity & access management software to e-resources. It’s the gateway between the online world of subscription-based content and those who want to access it through their library. It makes librarians’ lives less complex, it provides simplicity for the patrons and ultimately helps extend the audience of publishers.
When OpenAthens integrates with PressReader, it creates simplicity. It provides access to resources in a way that’s familiar to your patrons while improving the end-user experience and ultimately that of your library.
This slide shows OpenAthens integration which has been done within PressReader Application. Once the user has opened the PressReader app, they are prompted to sign in. Once they have chosen their organization, they simply enter their OpenAthens credentials and the access is granted.
PressReader reached out to several of our clients who use OpenAthens, we pulled responses from Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America both from Public and Academic Research Libraries.
We asked about issues facing their libraries, and how PressReader and OpenAthens works to alleviate some of their problems. Here is what we found.
Regardless of the library specialty or location there was a commonality amongst the issues libraries are facing. Budget cuts, dwindling usage, lack of training, understaffing and most importantly anytime access to online resources, this is where our partnership comes into action with OpenAthens.
One of the more telling responses for us came from Stacyann Quintero, the Library Director at the University of the South Caribbean, Stacey mentioned that her international students wanted remote access to library resources as they found the physical library to be an intimidating place, especially without an efficient system of discovery.
Staceyann went on to say, “PressReader’s helped libraries become an information gateway to the outside world. With OpenAthens authentication, access to trusted resources is seamless”
So while PressReader has become an information highway, OpenAthens has enabled remote access to patrons using their own personal devices, using a SSO. It doesn’t get much easier than that!
Did you know that 7 out of 10 countries fear that fake news will be used as a weapon? Another chilling statistic is that 63% of people do not know how to recognize good news from fake news?
Libraries evoke a feeling of trust and this is an area where PresssReader and OpenAthens have helped libraries provide access to content that is trusted, vetted and has gone through an editorial process.
Cedefop Research Support Centre Librarian Evangelia Katrinaki had this to say, “In this era of fake news, a platform which provides access to more than 7000 reliable newspapers and magazines in an electronic format from our desktop or tablet, in a single-sign-on manner, is a big deal for us. And although PressReader does not provide scientific information, it is in accordance with Cedefop’s mandate to provide great customer service to our in-house experts and staff while keeping them up to date with premium content and stories that are actually good, trusted and reliable.“
At PressReader, Trusted content is one of our pillars, and we’re glad to stand out amongst social media and web news aggregators. PressReader equips students, patrons, and staff with content they care about. And with OpenAthens, they can easily monitor usage statistics to find out just how much of an impact we have on their day-to-day activities.
The final, and probably the most important point, is that OpenAthens together with PressReader allows libraries to offer premium valued content with an easy to use single-sign-on solution while reducing spend and eliminating technical inefficiencies and ongoing maintenance.
At the end of the day, all of these solutions represent the core of what PressReader offers to libraries. Trusted, premium content. A global perspective. And bias-free journalism. Ultimately, it’s about providing your staff and patrons content, in a way that makes sense. With OpenAthens, that experience is made even easier by making sure content is easily accessibly anywhere anytime.
It’s safe to safe that PressReader would not be able to provide such a seamless user experience without OpenAthens.
If you want to hear more about our work with libraries around the world, or our partnership with OpenAthens, now’s the time to ask.
Thank you!
