  5. 5. Myth 3—LEDs Are Not Bright Enough OPPLE checked: The main reason why you may have heard this is because of an inaccurate comparison. It can seem that LED fixtures deliver less light than conventional bulbs. However this is simply not taking into account the significant wasted light amount that is generated by conventional lighting solutions. Long story short, raw lumen output is an over-simplistic and incomplete measure of the suitability of a lighting fixture for a given task. How to measure this more accurately? To better compare LED to conventional lighting one should rather look at the delivered light, measuring the luminous flux at the areas that are supposed to be illuminated. Myth 3—LEDs Are Not Bright Enough Generally, a lot of the raw lumen output of conventional lighting is lost in the housing, as the light is emitted in all directions, whereas LED chips emit their light in the intended directions. The use of lenses, shades and filters, can further influence the strength and characteristics of the delivered light. Therefore, in overall performance LED lighting usually performs just as well if not much better than incandescent or fluorescent lighting. Yet, in the process of converting electricity to light, waste heat is produced. Via special heat sinks the lighting fixture channels the heat away.
