2. “no sane person feels good during a
global disaster”- your discomfort
means you are not in denial and will be
able to authentically move towards
growth and adaptation
(Chronicle of Higher Ed, 2020).
3. With the ever increasing cases of COVID-19, the
economic burden is drastically being affected.
Airlines have eased off operations with hundreds
of people being stranded in various countries.
Lack of movement of food supplies, necessary
items and emergency medical equipment across
continents.
Various countries has been hit by recession , eg
Australia after successive 30 years of growth has
been plundered by recession this year.
4. The COVID-19 patients are ever increasingly being ridiculed worldwide
as well as in Fiji.
Not a single religion, race, color or gender spared.
People are fearful, a sneeze on subway caused the entire subway to be
evacuated.
People are spitting on others as a weapon to shove them off.
Certainly, COVID’s impact has reached a far more greater effect than
just a medical emergency.
5. “Loneliness and isolation” is cited by the greatest percent of
moderate to severe depression (73%) and anxiety (62%)
Special populations are also experiencing high anxiety and
depression, including LGBTQ, caregivers, students, veterans/active
duty, and people with chronic health conditions.
10. Depriving people of their liberty for the wider public good is
often contentious and needs to be handled carefully.
Officials should take every measure to ensure that this
experience is as tolerable as possible for people.
This can be achieved by:
• telling people what is happening and why
• explaining how long it will continue
• providing meaningful activities for them to do while in
quarantine,
• ensuring basic supplies (such as food, water, and medical
supplies) are available
• reinforcing the sense of altruism
• Health officials charged with implementing quarantine,
who by definition are in employment and usually with
reasonable job security, should also remember that not
everyone is in the same situation.
If the quarantine experience is negative, there can be
long-term consequences that affects all; the health-care
system that administered the quarantine along the politicians
and public health officials who mandated it.
11. Like every major change, there will be losses to
mourn AND new opportunities to grow and be
better; both bad and good things will happen.
Bereavement is a “normal” reaction to the loss
of a loved one
Of concern is the transformation of normal grief
and distress into prolonged grief and major
depressive disorder and symptoms of post
traumatic stress disorder.
These conditions can become chronic with
additional comorbidities such as substance use
disorder
• Staying safe at home is a wonderful thing you
are doing for you, your family and your
community
Editor's Notes
Confinement, loss of usual routine, and reduced social and physical contact with cause boredom, frustration, and a sense of isolation from the rest of the world, which is distressing to participants. This frustration is exacerbated by not being able to take part in usual day-to-day activities, such as shopping for basic necessities, playing, gathering etc.
Having inadequate basic supplies (eg, food, water, clothes, or accommodation) during quarantine is a source of frustration.(maniac shopping spree)
Not being unable to get regular medical care and prescriptions also appeared to be a problem for some as all medical focus was on covid 19 .
Late delivery of supplies, out of reach areas.
Poor information from public health authorities are a stressor, reporting insufficient clear guidelines about actions to take and confusion about the purpose of quarantine. Political football caused more nuisance and disharmony. Poor coordination between the multiple jurisdictions and levels of government involved. Curfew.
Perceived lack of transparency from health and government officials about the severity of the pandemic. Actual figures were surpressed.
Perhaps related to the lack of clear guidelines or rationale, perceived difficulty with complying with quarantine protocols was a significant predictor of post-traumatic stress symptoms in one study
Financial loss can be a problem during quarantine, with people unable to work and having to interrupt their professional activities with no advanced planning; the effects appear to be long lasting. The financial loss as a result of quarantine creates serious socioeconomic distress and is a risk factor for symptoms of psychological disorders of both anger and anxiety several months after quarantine.
Many became dependent on their families to provide for them financially during quarantine which was often hard to accept and could cause conflicts.
Several health-care workers involved during this covid 19 outbreak quarantine had led their families to consider their jobs to be too risky, creating intra-household tension.
