RECENT ASSIGNMENTS
Since 2002 I have been offering consulting, writing and editing services to a range of clients
in Ireland, the European Union, Kuwait and other countries. Highlights:
A business plan I devised for a producer of live‐plays and TV series enabled management to
treble turn‐over within six months. My study paper for a light‐bulb factory was approved for
investment by the Counter‐trade Offset Programme Office in Kuwait. I also undertook a
functional study of requirements for a control system for the production of TV series.
My analysis of focus group discussions on behalf of the National Democratic Institute and
the World Bank has helped those institutions understand the political and economic realities
of Kuwait.
Numerous corporate profiles, websites, marketing brochures and video scripts written by
me have been praised highly. I edit a quarterly magazine for a large engineering and con‐
struction company which has become a model for corporate newsletters in the Arabian Gulf.

BUSINESS CONSULTANT, MANAGER, EDITOR AND WRITER
CAREER SUMMARY
As a business consultant and editor I offer the fruits of broad experience across a range of
industries, a very analytic and practical mind, and an instinctive sense of what is feasible.
I have enjoyed an interesting career in a variety of roles in many industrial sectors, beginning
in London in 1975 as a management accounting trainee with an international conglomerate.
I then obtained some experience in an accounting practice, after which I was the chief
accountant in a solicitor’s practice for several years.
Next I became the financial controller of a software company, where I first became involved
in specifying the functionalities of management information systems. After qualifying as a
certified accountant, I became an independent consultant, undertaking assignments in
London and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The work ranged from setting up of basic computerized
accounting systems for SMEs, through the preparation of financial statements, financial
investigations and reviews, to forensic accounting
In 1998, I relocated to Kuwait as a senior consultant with NBK Consulting Group in the
National Bank of Kuwait. There I undertook high‐level assignments in MIS, financial reviews
and investigations, reviews of operations, and assessment of personnel and training needs.
Following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990, NBK Consulting Group was abolished.
In 1991, I became the managing partner of a trading company in Kuwait. We refurbished the
country’s main sports clubs which had been stripped during the Iraqi occupation. Once the
country had been cleaned up, however, the market for our products and services collapsed.
From 1993 to 1997 I worked as an independent consultant and lecturer in Kuwait, initially on
MIS projects, as local companies were at that time computerizing their operations. Later I
began offering operations analysis, feasibility investigations, business planning, strategy‐
development, and recruitment services for SMEs. In addition I was a part‐time lecturer in
basic management, finance and accounting skills for major companies, such as KNPC in
Kuwait and ADNOC in the UAE. I prepared the training materials for these courses myself.
I also exploited a niche market for the creation of corporate brochures and worked on an ad
hoc basis for the Ministry of Information as a news editor and reader, programme writer and
presenter with Radio Kuwait’s English FM and AM services. I wrote two books on Kuwait, the
Kuwait Pocket Guide and Doing Business with Kuwait, as well as numerous articles for local
English‐language newspapers.
From March 1997 to July 1998 I was the managing partner of a publishing company I set up
with a Kuwaiti partner to publish the annual Kuwait Pocket Guide. When our financier failed

to fulfil his funding obligations, my partner and I decided to dissolve the company.
From 1998 to 2000 I was the manager of Kuwait Publishing House. I developed the Kuwait
Pocket Guide into a very profitable annual publication. I also launched Al‐Kuwait Al‐Youm, a
weekly translation into English of the Official Gazette, Welcome to Kuwait, a quarterly
English‐language tourist guide, and a series of new Kuwait laws in English in booklet form.
These projects were successful. However I had a disagreement with the owner concerning
my share of the profits and the matter went to litigation.
From 2000 to 2001 I worked as a free‐lance business consultant, undertaking three notable
assignments. [A] A comprehensive plan I developed for a major state‐owned manufacturer
of motor oils enabled the company to re‐establish itself and expand sales by 30%. [B] My
feasibility study for a corporate communications consultancy secured me a long‐term
contract in business development. [C] I undertook an in‐depth study of the viability of
establishing a publishing division for a diverse group of companies and as a result was
offered the post of manager for the new division in 2001.
During this one‐year contract, I launched Kuwait this month, an international magazine with
a focus on Kuwait. The content of this vibrant 136‐page magazine was designed to appeal to
a wide range of readers and it became an outstanding success in the local market. The high
standard induced the Kuwait Ministry of Information to distribute it internationally.
Since 2002 I have been offering business consulting, writing and editing services to clients in
Ireland, the European Union, Kuwait and other countries, and have carried out several
notable assignments. These include:
a concept study on the feasibility of setting up a factory to make light‐bulbs in Kuwait,
which was approved by the Counter‐trade Offset Programme, Ministry of Finance,
Kuwait, for investment under that programme
a business plan for a theatre and TV production company that trebled turnover within six
months
analyses of focus group discussions in Kuwait for the World Bank (employee attitudes to
privatization) and the National Democratic Institute (voter attitudes to female candidates)
have contributed to a better understanding of the issues involved.
For nearly five years I have been the editor of Transmission, the corporate newsletter of
Kharafi National, a major construction company in the Middle East, carrying out all work
through the Internet.
I have also developed the content for search‐engine optimized websites on behalf of
international corporations in Ireland and the Middle East.
I relocated back to Ireland in 2007.

DOING BUSINESS WITH KUWAIT (1997 and 2004)
Published by: Kogan Page, London
(www.kogan‐page.co.uk / www.globalmarketbriefings.com)
This comprehensive 500‐page book covers most aspects of Kuwait’s business life. It takes a
close look at the country’s history and business background, economy and infrastructure and
related business opportunities, commercial laws and regulations, financial institutions and
sources of finance including Islamic banking, taxation, public tendering and counter‐trade off
set obligations, importing and exporting regulations and standards. It includes practical
marketing advice, and covers the social and behavioural aspects that need to be understood
to do business locally.
First published in 1997, Doing Business with Kuwait is popular with international
corporations. Fully revised and updated in 2004.
KUWAIT POCKET GUIDE (1995 – 2000):
Published in English and Arabic by:
Multi‐media (1995) / Fares Al‐Kuwait (1998) / Kuwait Publishing House (1999 & 2000)
This 450+ page pocket‐sized book attempts to answer most questions, cultural, legal and
social, posed by visitors, new arrivals and long‐term expatriate residents. The book includes
wide‐ranging classified directories.
Perhaps one‐of‐a‐kind in the world, the Kuwait Pocket Guide was almost completely
rewritten for 1998 and 2000 to better reflect its users’ needs.
KUWAIT THIS MONTH – a commercial magazine
Published by: MBS Publishing, Musaed Badar Al‐Sayer Group
I founded this vibrant 136‐page magazine in 2001 and wrote about 50 percent of the articles,
as well as editing the work of contributors and supervising layout and production. The
magazine contained erudite stories on local architecture, art collections and culture,
education, health and alternative medicine, science and information technology. It also
included popular articles on motor cars, the latest movies and videos, local and international
sporting events and restaurants, travel, and a section for children.

The broad range made it attractive to readers from a wide cross‐section of society and the
magazine became an outstanding local success. The high standard of Kuwait this month, and
its ability to reflect contemporary local culture with ease and charm, induced the Kuwait
Ministry of Information to buy several hundred copies a month for distribution through its
information offices in Kuwait’s overseas embassies.
TRANSMISSION ‐ a corporate newsletter
Issued by: Kharafi National, Kuwait
Kharafi National, which employs 25,000 and has a turnover approaching US$1 billion a year,
undertakes a wide‐range of construction and facility management activities in the Middle
East in the oil, gas, power, petrochemical, water and waste‐water management, civil and
industrial sectors. Though about half of this quarterly 40‐page magazine consists of articles
on the company’s current projects, the content also covers a variety of matters, such as
health, safety and environment, corporate social responsibility, quality assurance, human
resources, corporate developments, and staff‐related social events.
I took over as editor in 2003 and, as well as developing Transmission as a conduit for
communications between senior management and staff, I have turned it into a very
successful public relations medium for bringing Kharafi National’s reputation for excellence
to the notice of its current and prospective clients and associates.
