If you had a fully configured 6180, with all 6 expansion enclosures, this is what the units would look like figuratively. They are more likely to be arranged vertically in a single column, with the 6180 itself positioned in the middle of the 6-attachment stack.
The colored cables indicate how the drive enclosures are attached together while providing highest data availability. Every disk drive in this manner is redundantly connected to each controller, providing 100% failover capability in the event of any device failure: drive, controller or infrastructure. As you can see, each disk channel has an in- and out- connector.
Top-down, Bottom-Up (TDBU) cabling is not the norm in the industry. The typical storage system employs simple daisy chaining which is not as robust or HA as TBDU. In the illustration above the customer could experience a catastrophic drive enclosure failure yet still remain connected to all enclosures both before and after the failed tray. In a daisy-chained environment the same catastrophic failure would eliminate access to all
Sample Profiles
Just to give you an idea, here are some sample application profiles for Oracle OLTP, mail spooling, and HPTC workloads. We've developed these profiles based on feedback from our customers and periodically tweak them (in new versions of software) to reflect any changes in how our customers use their arrays. You can also tune the profiles to exactly match your needs.
Trays of disks ship from the factory matching the default system profile, which means that if you require only solid, general-purpose computing, you can simply create and present volumes from the default pool and utilize newly installed storage within minutes.
If you need to tune storage for specific applications, the process is still straightforward. You can either employ one of the 15 factory configured profiles or create your own profile. This table shows a few examples of the preconfigured profiles and their settings. To create your own profile, you tune the settings shown on the left. The RAID level for factory profiles all use either RAID 1 or 5. The segment size at the controller tray is generally set to 64 KB for most applications, but highly transaction-oriented applications can benefit from the 32 KB setting. The segment size must be the same for all drives in a controller tray pair.
The array type to use setting indicates the number of shelves in an attached array. The options are bandwidth, I/O performance, capacity, and best match. The virtualization strategy can be set to stripe or concatenate. Concatenate appends storage from any available disk space. Stripe selects storage from multiple virtual disks to enhance performance. The stripe size setting determines the size of the data chunks sent from the controller to the storage tray.
The ST2500 series provides multiple ways to compete, the 2540 is a Fiber Channel-based host array, the 2530 is a SAS-based host array, and the 2510 is an iSCSI-based host array. Take a moment to go through the specifications.

TRANSITION- Let's take a closer look at two key products that represent Sun IP, the SL8500 and the SL500...
This slide provides some basic product spec’s. The spec’s are self-explanatory.
Note on slot capacity: The library can scale beyond 3,000 slots—5,821 is the actual max config, with real world config’s of ~5,361. We don’t actively promote capacities above 3,000 because the SL8500 is generally a better fit for higher capacities. However, some customers cannot take the SL8500 because of height issues—for these customers the SL3000 could be a good solution for very large slot capacities.
This slide just shows the different kind of modules. You start with a base module and when you are ready to grow, you can choose between a Drive Expansion Module (DEM) if you need more drives, or a Cartridge Expansion Module (CEM) if you only need extra cartridge capacity. The other type of module is a Parking Expansion Module (PEM), which is a special purpose/converted CEM which will be discussed in more detail later.
The Centerline architecture allows expansion modules to be installed on both sides of the base module. This architecture is unique in the industry provides customers with performance and power benefits.
The Sun SL3000 provides the most flexible capacity-on-demand model in the tape industry, down to a single slot if desired.
The question that always comes up on this slide is “why a 1 slot key”? The answer is that 1) it doesn’t take any extra effort from the library to support 1 slot increments so why not, and the physical modules will never break evenly on a 100 slot increment so we wanted to make it easy on customers to use their entire asset and buy exactly what they want.
The larger sized keys (200, 500, and 1000) are there to privide a volume discount to cutomers needing more than 100 slots in any given purchase.
Reliability is important, but it doesn’t translate to high availability. Components will break, that’s a given, and the more mechanical the device the higher the probablility of failure. For this reason, it is important to have redundant components to allow the library to continue operation when a failure occurs.
The most important feature for redundancy is the robot and the SL3000 offers a DualBot feature that places two robots on the same rail for high availability.
In addition to robots, we have redundant power—the library ships standard with N+1 DC power supplies and has a 2N power option for redunant AC power. If the customer prefers, we can support both N+1 and 2N for maximum power redundancy. Note, the SL3000 power redundancy works for the robot, drives, and electronics.
For the control path, we have a Dual TCP/IP feature that works in the same manner as the SL8500 Dual TCP/IP feature (don’t confuse it with the SL8500 Multi-TCP/IP feature).
Finally, we do offer redundant CAPs when there are multiple modules in the SL3000 config as a CAP can be installed in each expansion module.
The SL500 features completely innovative robotics design which is all within a singular drawer in the base unit. There is no arm in the Green library, instead a hand swivels to replace tapes in the drives. The elevator platform moves up and down the library, which increases its scalability by allowing the library to grow vertically without increasing it’s mechanical complexity or sacrificing it’s reliability. SL500 is the densest library on the market and allows the customer to fit into a rack within their current environment.

The op panel is an optional feature of the SL500. The i500 has a touch screen op panel as well—there’s not much else to say.

StorageTek Library Console (SLC) comes standard with the SL500. The same functionality available on the op panel is available on the SLC. This remote management application makes it easy to manage the SL500 from any location.
Sun has an i500 in our labs. One of the things that we have noticed is that the remote application can be painfully slow. Both applications provide a good amount of capabilities. Expect a white paper in the future comparing the technical aspects of the two libraries.
