a) Choosing behavioral reinforcers wisely
b) Removing distractions
c) Prepping the child to accept being there: Establishing Rapport
and Sensory Diet
2. We need to decipher the “rules” of said environment:
a) Visual Supports (visual schedules, Social Stories, rule
reminder charts etc.)
b) Communication Aids (Apps)
c) Development of Humor

1. We need to start off using tech & apps as reinforcers:
2. We need to assess child’s learning style & play level, to pair
toys & tech
3. We need to use technology to teach Causality and
Categorization, to help child make sense of the things/people in
the environment
a) Technology naturally teaches If....Then Contingent &
sequencing
(beginning/middle/end to all tasks)
b) Technology fosters “whole body learning” through teachable
moments involving groups of pictures, vocabulary, tasks, and
apps

• Play fosters Self Concept,
emotional engagement with
others, and the ability to self
regulate. It facilitates the child’s

Like any tool or toy, an understanding of developmental milestones and
language development helps the special education service provider know
which app to use when. Understanding the child’s inner landscape and
potential “triggers” are needed to set the stage for maximum impact. What is
also needed before introducing an iPad® into lesson plans is:
✦ A universal way to assess which iOS App is actually worth buying
✦A developmental hierarchy to consider, when introducing specific iOS
apps into treatment at specific junctures in time

We need to sanitize the learning environment by: a) Choosing behavioral reinforcers wisely b) Removing distractions c) Prepping the child to accept being there: Establishing Rapport and Sensory Diet 2.   • 13. The Importance of Play: • Play fosters Self Concept, emotional engagement with others, and the ability to self regulate. It facilitates the child’s understanding of the environment (i.e. the structure and routine, rules, and expectations of said environment). It provides social referencing through empathy. Understanding the child’s inner landscape and potential “triggers” are needed to set the stage for maximum impact.   1. WHY IS PLAY SO CRUCIAL? Have a member in the audience read this slide aloud and explain how play fosters orientation, self regulation by practicing what they see, so they know what to expect, and there is also an element of stress management, and finally-play fosters TOM cuz child begins to recognize that he is a separate entity from others but that he needs/wants their attention etc. CHECK OUT BONNIE’S PLAY in TOY STORY 3!
