At the end of this presentation, I want you to leave with three very distinct feelings…I want you to leave feeling - (slide change)
Angry. I also hope that you leave feeling…(slide change)
Inspired. And lastly, I hope that you leave feeling (slide change)
Committed.
Angry.
We should be angry that these seven children along with millions of others, won’t get the educational opportunity that you and I have had. This has to change. And we must be angry to change it.
Inspired - By the hundreds of young people like Sharanya here who are working relentlessly to ensure every child attains an excellent education.
And Committed. So committed that you leave here today determined to do something to make educational equity a reality for every child.
Good morning/ evening everyone. I am _Prachi Luthra_, a 2014 Teach For India Fellow and now a part of the Fellowship Recruitment Team.
To understand what we do at Teach For India, it is extremely important to first understand, why we do what we do. And for this it is important to understand the education scenario in India.
Can I request everyone to please stand up?
For a while imagine you represent the microcosm of all the children in India – all 320 million of them. And for a moment, imagine you are all 3, 4, 5 years old and you are just about to enter school!
At this point, can you (point to about 4% of the room) please sit down? Can anyone tell me what you think is the difference between those people who are sitting down versus those people who are standing up in the context of education? (get one response from the crowd). These kids (pointing to the ones sitting down) represent…(slide change)
4% of Indian children who will never go to school.
These kids will lead their whole lives oblivious of the concept of education – they will have never seen a chalkboard, never work with pens or pencils, or even see the gate to a school. So, what this means, is that all of you (point to everyone standing up) represent the subset of Indian children who have at least enrolled in school. 4% might seem like a small number – but do remember that this is 4% of 320 million which is a sizeable number!
Can I now request (pointing to about half the room) to please sit down. Can anyone tell me the difference between those sitting down and those standing up in the context of education? (Get one response from the crowd). The children sitting down right now represent…(slide change)
42% of kids who don’t make it beyond 5th standard. By that, I don’t mean that the seated kids all drop out in 5th standard, some drop out in 2nd, some in 3rd, some in 4th, but by the end of 5th grade, all of the kids who are sitting down right now have left the educational system. We started out with 4% of children not enrolling into schools and by the time the children reach 5th grade, we have nearly half of India’s children dropping out of school.
Think about your lives in 5th grade and think about your lives right now. How different would your lives be right now if you had dropped out in 5th grade? I know my life - the kind of friends I have, the kind of books I read or even the plethora of job opportunities that are available to me today – nothing would’ve been the same!
Now, I would like all of you to sit (about 90% of the room). Now, look around the room. These people sitting down represent the
90% of Indian students who will never go to college.
And if you are a girl in rural India, only 1% of you will make it to college – 99% of you don’t! This just isn’t fair! It isn’t fair that your demographics determine your destiny.
Also, think of the impact this has on our country. We are maximizing only 10% of our human potential. Just imagine the kind of growth India could achieve if we were maximally utilizing this 90% as well!
And this brings me to the vision of Teach For India
And I would request that each of you read out this together for me. On the count f 3 – 1,2,3…
(Crowd reads out loudly)
Two words I want to focus on here are all and excellent
Okay, so ALL children. By this I mean, all 320 million students we discussed earlier. Every single child needs access to an education (4% currently don’t) and every child irrespective of where he/she come from deserves this right.
Second – Excellent.
Why should it be an excellent education? This is because the quality of education has a direct correlation to level of education and lifetime earnings, even health and longevity. So eradicating the achievement gap in education not only makes India more equitable, it also dramatically improves the average standard of life of an individual.
So how are we getting to this vision of one day all children…? Through our mission…which is
“To build a movement of leaders who will eliminate educational inequity in India”
I would like to focus on the word leaders in particular. We, at, Teach For India believe that this staggering challenge will only be solved if India’s best and brightest young people become the next generation of leaders who care deeply about solving this problem.
Let us now have a look at some of these leaders who have joined us
From prestigious colleges such as Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University and IIT Bombay, we have Arushi Kumar and Rajiv who have taken on the fellowship this year
Having completed her degree in law from National Law School, Avantika is now a Teach for India fellow teaching grade 3 in Delhi and Akshay Purohit who completed his degree from Columbia University before he joined the fellowship
Engineers with a varied set of experiences such as Arka who graduated from BITS Pilani, Goa and Ruchita who worked at Accenture, are now teaching in Teach For India classrooms
Working professionals from globally renowned companies such as Bhavpriya from Google and Ishpreet from Infosys have taken that first step towards eliminating educational inequity
Now that you have met a few of our fellows, take 20 seconds to look at this slide to see the range of colleges and corporates are Fellows have come from.
These are some of the under graduate colleges where our Fellows come from
Some post-graduate colleges
As well as a host of international universities
A significant percentage of our Cohort every year is comprised of working professionals from diverse sectors such as banking, IT, consulting, manufacturing and marketing.
All in all, we take a pride that our Fellows come from 382 colleges and 219 corporates. It is this diversity that really propels our work together.
Every year, Teach For India receives thousands of applications for its Fellowship program.
Last year, we received approximately 11,300 applications for this program.
Out of these, we made offers to around 800 applicants.
Our selectivity has been at 7% over the past 5 years
As stated in our mission statement, we want to build a movement of leaders making the fellowship a highly selective and aspirational program.
This is not a competitive process but those who meet our criteria will get through because more the fellows joining us, more the number of children we can impact.
