SOCIAL WORK IN INDIA
Social Reform in Medieval Period:
1206-1706
• Social reform practiced emphasized on the
contributions made by kings to brings changes
in the structure of social organizations.
• A Muslim king Sultan played a great role in
social service even in education and religion.
• Sultan’s work like strengthening the won
territory, providing a strong administration in
the foreign country showed the need of kings
role.
• The religion commanded the capable and
wealthy people to help needier by giving
Zakat.
• There are 5 legal yearly alms under Zakat:
moony, cattle, grains, fruits and other goods.
• The King’s duties include: maintaining peace
in the state, protection form foreign invasion,
management of tax system, providing justice
to people in addition of these the rulers used
to be concern in public welfare.
Some Important Social Practice in the Medieval
Period
a) Social welfare during Sultanate:
- It is a Muslim state where kings attempted social welfare
besides security invasion, collections of fair tax, and
providing justice.
- Malik Ali in Balwan helped the helpless and poor people
and used to give silver and golden coins to beggars.
- Ghies-Ud-in, a benevolent king (Mohammad Gawan he
spent all of his properties for helping the poor people. He
himself used to live ordinary life.
- It was the traditions of Sheikhs to give gift to needy people
who came to their Khanquahs.
- Disciple of Sheikhs used to be appointed the manger to
look after helpless needy people.
b)Social welfares during the Mughal Rule:
- Humayan was the first couragious king, steped to
stop Sati system in 1583 A.D
- Akabar, great ruler reformed the social works and
ended social evils like slavery systmem, child
marriage, alcoholism etc.
- Akbar began equality among the people of all
caste, class and religions.
- He also adopted the policy of secularism in terms
of religious beliefs and practice.
- He became so liberal in ensuring the lands and
money to all the people like Hindus, Jains, Parsi
etc.
- Akbar developed two types of poor reliefs:
i) Provision of money and availability of the
necessary things to the poor and helpless
people who came in his palace.
ii) Systematic and organizational social support to
be provided to needy and poor people.
• According to Islam rich and capable had to help
the poor and helpless Muslims with Zakat in the
form of money, cattle, foods etc.
• The providing of water for poor people, building
mosque, provision of shelter and other
benevolent works were considered to be sacred
works.

Social Reform in Medieval Period: 1206-1706 • Social reform practiced emphasized on the contributions made by kings to brings changes in the structure of social organizations. • A Muslim king Sultan played a great role in social service even in education and religion. • Sultan’s work like strengthening the won territory, providing a strong administration in the foreign country showed the need of kings role.
  • 3. • The religion commanded the capable and wealthy people to help needier by giving Zakat. • There are 5 legal yearly alms under Zakat: moony, cattle, grains, fruits and other goods. • The King’s duties include: maintaining peace in the state, protection form foreign invasion, management of tax system, providing justice to people in addition of these the rulers used to be concern in public welfare.

Some Important Social Practice in the Medieval Period a) Social welfare during Sultanate: - It is a Muslim state where kings attempted social welfare besides security invasion, collections of fair tax, and providing justice. - Malik Ali in Balwan helped the helpless and poor people and used to give silver and golden coins to beggars. - Ghies-Ud-in, a benevolent king (Mohammad Gawan he spent all of his properties for helping the poor people. He himself used to live ordinary life. - It was the traditions of Sheikhs to give gift to needy people who came to their Khanquahs. - Disciple of Sheikhs used to be appointed the manger to look after helpless needy people.
  • 5. b)Social welfares during the Mughal Rule: - Humayan was the first couragious king, steped to stop Sati system in 1583 A.D - Akabar, great ruler reformed the social works and ended social evils like slavery systmem, child marriage, alcoholism etc. - Akbar began equality among the people of all caste, class and religions. - He also adopted the policy of secularism in terms of religious beliefs and practice. - He became so liberal in ensuring the lands and money to all the people like Hindus, Jains, Parsi etc.
  • 6. - Akbar developed two types of poor reliefs: i) Provision of money and availability of the necessary things to the poor and helpless people who came in his palace. ii) Systematic and organizational social support to be provided to needy and poor people. • According to Islam rich and capable had to help the poor and helpless Muslims with Zakat in the form of money, cattle, foods etc. • The providing of water for poor people, building mosque, provision of shelter and other benevolent works were considered to be sacred works.
