The red-crowned roofed turtle is a critically endangered species, with only about 400 breeding females remaining. It is found in rivers in parts of India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. The turtle plays an important ecological role but is threatened by habitat loss, pollution, accidental drowning in fishing nets, and poaching for its meat and shell. Conservation efforts should focus on reducing water pollution, protecting nests from predators, increasing awareness, and preventing illegal hunting to help save this species from extinction.

3. WHAT IS ENDANGERED?
A plant or animal species existing in such small
numbers that it is in danger of becoming extinct,
especially such a species placed in jeopardy as a result
of human activity.
One of the principal factors in the endangerment or
extinction of a species is the destruction or pollution
of its native habitat.
4. CAUSES OF BEING ENDANGERED
Destruction of Habitat
Humans destroy precious habitat--the natural environment of a living thing--when they fill swamps and
marshes, dam rivers and cut down trees to build homes, roads and other developments.
Pollution
Oil spills, acid rain and water pollution have been devastating for many species of fish and birds.
Hunting and Fishing
Many animals are over-hunted because their meat, fur and other parts are very valuable.
Exotic Species
When animals or plants arrive into a new habitat from a foreign place they sometimes introduce diseases that
the native species can't fight. These "exotic" species can also prey on the native species.
6. CATEGORY
A critically endangered (CR) species is one
that has been categorized by the International
Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as
facing an extremely high risk of extinction in
the wild.
7. PRESENT POPULATION
The red crowned roofed turtle (Batagur kachuga) is one of the
most endangered of world’s freshwater turtle species, with only
around an estimated 400 breeding females at the last overall
survey in 2011.
8. WHERE IT IS FOUND?
This reptile was historically widespread in
Central Nepal, NE India, Bangladesh,
primarily in deep flowing freshwater rivers
with terrestrial nest sites in the watershed of
the Ganges River and probably NW Burma.
9. SIGNIFICANCE
Turtles play a critical ecological role in the
environments in which they occur. For
example, freshwater turtles help
control aquatic vegetation, serve as scavengers
and help maintain rivers and lakes in a healthy
condition. In addition, turtles occupy a
significant role in the cultures of many people
around the world.
10. WHY IT IS ENDANGERED?
The large Batagur turtles are probably the most
threatened freshwater turtles in Ithe world.Their
populations have now been drastically reduced
due to poaching for their meat and shells,
accidental drowning in fishing gear, water
pollution, hydroelectric infrastructure projects,
habitat destruction by sand mining, and
egg predation by jackals.
11. WHAT PREVENTIVE MEASURES CAN BETAKEN
TO PROTECT IT?
Water Pollution should me minimised.
Protection from scavengers
Awareness among people
Avoid illegal hunting.
