Storage-dense Dell EMC PowerEdge XE7100 server with dual PowerEdge XE7420 nodes met stringent verification standards for running Genetec Security Center with six archivers Scalable video management systems benefit from reliable servers with high capacities of internal storage because they allow you to store and retrieve large amounts of video while avoiding data silos. The Dell EMC™ PowerEdge™ XE7100 server with dual PowerEdge XE7420 nodes enabled by 2nd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors is a 5U chassis with 100 drive bays that can house up to 1.8PB of storage. In concert with Dell EMC Safety and Security Industrial Edge Solutions Validation Lab engineers, Principled Technologies validated the performance of Dell EMC PowerEdge XE7420 nodes running multiple video workloads using a Genetec™ Security Center video management solution (VMS). The PowerEdge XE7420 nodes met verification standards with six video archivers across eight different video workloads, varying in camera bitrate, recording mode, and RAID configuration to represent different safety and security use cases. With 1,800 cameras (at 1 Mbps) on a single XE7420 node, the Dell EMC PowerEdge XE7100 server can store up to 81.5 days of video. These results show that the Dell EMC PowerEdge XE7100 server with XE7420 nodes and 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors can provide a reliable, storage-dense solution for organizations running IP-based video security using Genetec Security Center solutions. Looking under the hood: Dell EMC PowerEdge XE7100 server According to Dell EMC, “the 5U PowerEdge XE7100 boasts the highest storage density in the industry.”1 With capacity for up to 100 3.5 inch drives, the PowerEdge XE7100 server holds up to 1.8PB of internal storage and can be configured to support object storage workloads with dual half-width XE7420 nodes or video analytics and media streaming workloads with full-width XE7440 nodes. These two dual-socket server nodes feature 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, are configurable with up to four GPUs, and can support 100GbE networking. How we tested and what we found We worked with Dell EMC engineers to validate the 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processor-powered PowerEdge XE7100 server running Genetec Security Center. The Dell EMC Safety and Security Industrial Edge Solutions Validation Lab in Durham, NC housed the server under test and testing equipment. Our engineers installed BIOS and firmware updates. Dell EMC engineers provisioned local storage, installed Windows Server 2016 on both XE7420 nodes, configured the networking, deployed the software required to complete the validations, and performed the validation testing. Our engineers ensured servers performed optimally during testing. They also reviewed raw testing results as well as Dell EMC Live Optics™ storage and server performance reports captured during validation testing. Generally two-socket servers with local storage are validated to run up to four archivers2 , but the Dell EMC PowerEdge XE7100 server with XE7420 nodes passed validation testing with six archivers per server in four different video security use cases with two RAID configurations: • Test case 1: 1,800 cameras at 1Mbps, continuous recording, 300Mbps per archiver –   y RAID 10+2 node configuration   y RAID 22+2 node configuration • Test case 2: 600 cameras at 1Mbps, motion detection recording, 100Mbps per archiver –   y RAID 10+2 node configuration   y RAID 22+2 node configuration • Test case 3: 600 cameras at 5Mbps, continuous recording, 500Mbps per archiver –   y RAID 10+2 node configuration   y RAID 22+2 node configuration • Test case 4: 300 cameras at 5Mbps, motion detection recording, 250Mbps per archiver –   y RAID 10+2 node configuration   y RAID 22+2 node configuration Genetec Security Center records video using software-defined archiver roles, which discover camera feeds, check cameras to see if they are recording, process all video and multimedia streams, and commit them to storage. A video safety solution can fail to receive validation by not being able to successfully record and play back multiple streams of video. The results in this report show data and successful validation for six archivers per XE7420 node, each with varying numbers of cameras. All validations were completed over a 24-hour period and also include a two-hour playback test. Playback load was determined by targeting 20% of total read bandwidth on each use case. Dell EMC engineers configured the networking, installed the operating system, deployed the software required to complete the validations, and performed the validation testing. We ensured that server performance was optimized during testing and reviewed raw testing results and Dell EMC Live Optics storage and server performance reports captured during validation testing. We cannot disclose Dell EMC proprietary processes related to this testing. Installing firmware updates on the PowerEdge XE7100 and XE7420 nodes 1. Download all the firmware updates from the Dell EMC firmware repository. 2. To update the firmware on the following components, run the .exe files in this order: a. Dell iDRAC b. BIOS c. CPLD d. OS Driver Pack e. Network firmware and drivers 3. Reboot the server as required between firmware updates.
