The Learning Route on Natural Resource Management and Climate Change Adaptation best practices, the experience in Kenya; took place between the 6-13 July 2014 in several counties in Kenya. The objective of this learning route is to scale up through peer to peer learning the Kenyan best multi stakeholders' strategies, tools and practices to fight environmental degradation and to adapt to climate change with the aim of improving the livelihoods of people living in affected communities. The learning Route has been developed by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) CARE (relief agency) in Kenya and the Cgiar Research Program on Climate Change & Food Security, in partnership with Procasur Africa. Here we have an overview of the presentation shared with us from our last of the three host case studies that were visited: Case 3: The Community of Balich and the Adaptation Learning Programme (Garissa Kenya)

Goal & Purpose of ALP www.CARECLIMATECHANGE.ORG Goal: to increase the capacity of vulnerable households to adapt to climate variability and change, through community based adaptation approaches. •4 donors- UK, Denmark, Finland, Austrian governments •4 countries - Ghana, Niger, Kenya and Mozambique over 5 years, 2010-2014 •In Kenya- 6 communities, 4 districts, 1 county •General learning from ASALs

CBA: Enhancing Adaptive Capacity • Adaptive capacity is defined as: – The ability of a system [human or natural] to adjust to climate change (including climate variability and extremes) to moderate potential damages, to take advantage of opportunities, or to cope with the consequences. • Ability to constantly adjust livelihood and risk management strategies in response to new and changing circumstances • Shaped by access to and control over resources • Influenced by external factors such as policies, institutions and power structures • Women and marginalized groups are often particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change – mobility • Adaptive capacity can vary over time based on changing conditions, and may differ in relation to particular hazards • http://community.eldis.org/.59d669a8/research.html WWW.CARECLIMATECHANGE.ORG

- - Adaptation is an adjustment in natural or human systems in response to actual or expected climatic stimuli or their effects, which moderates harm or exploits beneficial opportunities. Community-based adaptation (CBA) is a bottom-up approach whereby a community is positioned as the main entity to implement adaptation and is considered to be the subject of projects including competence development and technology transfer to improve adaptive capability. Based on the idea of CBA, examinations of approaches to vulnerability and adaptation to future climate change are conducted through assessments of risks and vulnerability that communities currently face. CBA is a bottom-up approach community as the main entity to implement adaptation
- The four elements for successful adaptation are: 1) promotion of climate-resilient livelihoods strategies such as diversification of land use and incomes; 2) disaster risk reduction strategies to reduce impacts of increasing climate-related natural disasters on vulnerable households; 3) strengthening capacity in a) community adaptive capacity such as in access to climate information and managing risk and uncertainty and b) local civil society and governmental institutions to better support communities in adaptation efforts; and lastly, 4) local and national level empowerment, advocacy and social mobilization to: a) address the underlying causes of vulnerability, such as poor governance, gender-based inequality over resource use, or limited access to basic services, and b) influence the policy and enabling environment. Adaptation planning in all of these elements is informed by climate knowledge and risks - in addition to the range of information on local context and conditions, underlying causes of vulnerability and the enabling environment.
