FOR GENDER EQUALITY AND AWARENESS
(WIMPh Project Proposal)
Project Leader:
Dr. Angelica M. Baylon
External Relations Director
Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific,

2. WIMPh Project Proposal
GENERAL OBJECTIVE
• This research primarily aims to generate data
on gender equality and cultural awareness
issues involving women seafarers and cadets
towards proposing a program and/or policy that
would promote gender and development in the
maritime higher education institutions (MHEIs)
and the maritime sector, in general.
3. WIMPh Project Proposal
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
1. To improve the understanding of human factors in the maritime
sector, considering gender equality and cultural awareness
issues met in the shipping industry
(target group: 440 cadet students and 220 female alumni)
2. To evaluate the economic efficiency of shipping companies
with mixed crews and the effects of external requirements
coming from IMO, ILO, ITF and civil society on ship
management, regarding modern policies of gender equality
(target group: 100 top shipping companies)
4. WIMPh Project Proposal
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
3. To study the effects of external requirements on modern human
resource management practices and on ship management
policies of gender equality
( target group: 100 top shipping companies)
4. To establish 1 virtual network for female seafarers
(55 female leaders in shipping as role model).
5. Based on the findings, to propose programs and policies on
gender equality and awareness with respect to:
(1) recruitment and placement,
(2) employment and promotion, and
(3) training and development.
5. WIMPh Project Proposal
SIGNIFICANCE
This WIMPh project is in substantial accordance with
desirable goals on Maritime Human Resource Management.
The project is relevant for improving the
understanding of human factors in the maritime
sector, by studying the cultural proficiency that
enable a mixed class of students to work well
together, compared to cultural proficiency met on
board ship with mixed crews.
Understanding the economic efficiency of shipping
companies with mixed crews will be beneficial for
ships' operations.
A focus connection between METI and shipping
industry shall be established.
6. WIMPh Project Proposal
SIGNIFICANCE
1. Improvement in the understanding of human factors in the
maritime sector, by studying the cultural proficiency that enable
a mixed class of students to work well together, compared to
cultural proficiency met on board ship with mixed crews.
2. The research will analyze whether women officers present styles
of leadership that add profit to ships' operations. ICT tools will be
used to make the research efficient: e.g. will be used electronic
shared-tools which allow getting the information in the “cloud”.
3. Provide clearer understanding on regulatory, statutory and other
requirements regarding gender equality and their effects in the
maritime education and training sector and the shipping industry,
in general.
