Defining Online Communities  What is an online community? “A publisher-owned website/platform that offers a common interest around which the community is themed, with interactive communication between the organization and community members and between the members themselves.” @publishingtech

  1. Academic Publishing For academic publishers, the priority is undoubtedly building online functionality into websites to meet the content needs of highly targeted audiences. With the rise of open access, there is also a concern with opening up content to a wider audience as possible, and also encouraging a more collaborative peer review process, that can be sped up through the presence of online communities. Examples of some online communities in the academic arena include: Library Connect (Elsevier) – a forum for the library and researcher community STAR (Taylor & Francis) – an online community for researchers in developing nations PeerJ – an online open access peer reviewed academic journal
