The Project
To pursue my interest in retail store design, I wanted to design
the Flagship Store for a ‘foreign’ brand in London. I chose to
design the Flagship Store for Fabindia (an Indian apparel &
houseware retailer) in London
The location : Oxford Street
I explored different shopping areas in
London and choose Oxford street for the following reasons
London’s premier retail destination
Oxford street is a major shopping street in London. Oxford
street is home to flagship & retail stores of many international
brands
Local & tourists shop at Oxford Street
Oxford street has high shoppers footfall as UK and International
shoppers continue to visit Oxford street for shopping
Target customers for Fabindia
Young, cosmopolitan, & internationally savvy customers who
visit Oxford street are the right target customers for Fabindia

The Start & growth in India
John Bissell who was a buyer for Macy’s New York went to India to work as a
consultant for the Ford Foundation. Bissell discovered a village-based industry with
a profusion of skills hidden from the world. Determined to showcase Indian
handloom textiles while providing equitable employment to traditional artisans,
Bissell established Fabindia in 1960.
Since then, Fabindia has grown to more than 100 stores across India, selling
contemporary apparel & houseware.
Taking Fabindia international
Fabindia is already popular and have stores in USA, ITALY,
AUSTRALIA, DUBAI, but people are unaware of how the
products are being made. Even though craftsman have equal
share in the company they are not being recognized.
Keeping the above in mind my aim is to design a Flagship Store
in London, where people connect with the brand through the
store design.

Organic shapes are shapes with a natural look and a flowing and curving appearance. They are often also referred to as
curvilinear shapes. Inspired by seashell, I decided to use Fibonacci spiral in my store interiors.
Concepts developed : concept s were created keeping Fibonacci spiral found in the seashells
Final Concept : I decided to use the below concept for my design. My next step was how will I use this in Store interiors.

What are organic forms and shapes and how it is used in design?
• Organic shapes are shapes with a natural look and a flowing and curving appearance, they are often
also referred to as curvilinear shapes
• Organic form is an abstract form with no symmetry to any part of the object. The form is free, no exact
degree at any corner, and design in a spontaneous way.
• Examples of organic shapes such as snowflakes, leaves, seashell, mountains, waves etc.
Use of Organic forms or shapes in interior space
Seashell Leaf Snowflake Mountains
46
47. I then started to use these organic shapes to create a space..
First model is created
keeping spiral in the mind.
Each curved wall is the
outline of the spiral.
Concept 1 Concept 2
Concept 3 Concept 4
The second model is
created by mimicking the
shape of the above shell
The third model is developed
by observing the outer layer
of the above shell. Curvy
space was created. But this
model was not successful.
In the above shell the outer
layer of the shell is like an
envelope. I took the same
idea of enveloping a space
with a curved form

As I worked further,
I started to use curved forms in
the interior space. I have created
a space using curved walls in the
above space.
This was created by
folding two curves and
joining them.
48

49. 8. First concept was created keeping
Fibonacci spiral in the mind. The
whole area is in a spiral shape which
creates a sense of movement.
9. Second concept was developed to resemble the
shape of seashell. The idea here was to
combine curves and the lines. The idea was
also to use sunlight through open air space,
skylights etc.
10. Third concept was developed to resemble the
shape of Universe system. Curving walls are
created which connects to different interior
level.
