◼ The first line of this very popular song in the Indian subcontinent, in
essence translates to “You've taken away my looks, my identity, by just
a glance”. But the literal translation refers to taking away certain
embellishments that indicate religious or cultural identity. The song
can be heard playing in both Hindu and Muslim song singing in India
and Pakistan and is considered by many to be a secular song.
◼ However, Makarand Paranjpe, director of IIAS, Shimla and ex-
professor at JNU, recently stirred up a controversy claiming that the
song was indeed a conversion song. In fact, one of the mark of identity
is literally derived from an Indian word for ‘stamp’ or ‘brand’ - and could
also be used for the marks used by either religion. Which song?

Q12
◼ In this 2010 flick, the pronunciation of the word X is erroneously
claimed to be phonetically from Y. The phrase from the movie went
on to be extreme popular allegedly disseminating false information,
much to the worry of linguists. The right pronunciation however has a
voiceless velar fricative.
◼ Voiceless means that the vocal cords don’t vibrate while producing
this sound. Velar implies that the region of production is the velum or
the soft palate, in this case, the uvula. Finally, fricative means that this
sound is produced by constricting the flow of air through a narrow
channel, causing turbulence—in this case, the narrow channel is that
formed by the back of the tongue and the uvula.
◼ Y play no role in the origin of this sound. X and Y please.

National Family Health Survey data, they documented that the child
mortality amongst Hindus is 14/1000 more than those of Muslim children
in India. That is a huge difference for a country with a population like
India.

Metrical poetry in Kannada and Telugu is called Chandas or
Chandassu. Prose and poetry follow the rules of Chandassu to design
the prosodic and structural features of 'poetry'. It generates rhythm to
the literature when the rules are properly followed. These features are
seen even in Sanskrit prosody and equivalents can be drawn to Greek
prosody.
Students of grammar still need to mug up the rules, but are aided by
ancient mnemonics. Although these mnemonics are taught in school,
in 2001, they made an appearance in pop culture as versions of their
English counterparts in the Telugu dub and were to stay on for a whole
decade. Where did they make their reappearance?

Q26
◼ Sankashta kara ganapati is a 2018 Kannada film where the protagonist is an
epileptic cartoonist who experiences weird symptoms after neurosurgery
undertaken to reduce the frequency of fits. The protagonist's left hand has a
mind of its own leading him to several predicaments.
◼ While under normal circumstances, thought, as intent, and action can be
assumed to be deeply mutually entangled, the occurrence of this syndrome can
be usefully conceptualized as a phenomenon reflecting a functional
"disentanglement" between thought and action. In short, the patient has a
hand gone out of hand. In order to deal with the syndrome, some patients
engage in personification of the affected hand. Despite the disorder the
protagonist overcomes the problem to reach his career goals and to woo the
girl he loves.
◼ Similar disorder is shown in the 2017 Tamil dark comedy film Peechaankai and
which famous 1964 Stanley Kubrick movie?

◼ This product was originally intended to be called X. Since the
Congress president in 1963 was also named X, the plan had
to be dropped. Meanwhile, a student from IIM-Calcutta
(which was also involved in the technical assistance of the
implementation of the project) proposed the name Y, by
which it is still known even now.
◼ Ever since 1966 it has been manufactured by HLL Lifecare, a
Government of India-owned corporation (Public-sector
undertaking) based in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

◼ Rat trap bond is a brick masonry method of wall
construction. Architect Laurie Baker introduced it
in Kerala in the 1970s and there it is used
extensively for its lower construction
cost, reduced material requirement and better
thermal efficiency and sound insulation than
conventional masonry wall, without
compromising strength of the wall.
◼ What is the special arrangement the bricks are
arranged in /funda ?
SAFETY SLIDE
◼ Bricks are placed in vertical
position instead of
conventional horizontal
position (alternating) thus
creating a hollow space
within the bricks.
Q29
India has one of the largest deposits of X in the world and is a major
ingredient in beauty products. Roughly 70% of X produced in India
comes from illegal mines that are totally unregulated by the
government. Family mining is common, and a young child’s small
stature and nimble hands also make them valuable for entering
narrow mine shafts and sorting smaller pieces of X.
Even natural cosmetics company Lush, which prides itself on its
ethical credentials, has struggled to clean up its X supply chain. This
has lead to new X-free cosmetics, synthetic X cosmetics and even
child labor free cosmetics in the market.

While the X is immensely popular in north India, a similar
instrument Y is played in the south, again mainly on auspicious
occasions and in temples.
X is either played alone or with tabla accompaniment. It has a
range of two octaves and requires immense breath control.
Y is usually accompanied by the percussion instrument thavil,
and sometimes by a wind instrument called ottu. Y has a range
of two and half octaves Y is much longer and louder than X. Due
to its high volume, the Y is said to be more suited for outdoor
concerts.

  • 139. Metrical poetry in Kannada and Telugu is called Chandas or Chandassu. Prose and poetry follow the rules of Chandassu to design the prosodic and structural features of 'poetry'. It generates rhythm to the literature when the rules are properly followed. These features are seen even in Sanskrit prosody and equivalents can be drawn to Greek prosody. Students of grammar still need to mug up the rules, but are aided by ancient mnemonics. Although these mnemonics are taught in school, in 2001, they made an appearance in pop culture as versions of their English counterparts in the Telugu dub and were to stay on for a whole decade. Where did they make their reappearance? Q25

The protagonist's left hand has a mind of its own leading him to several predicaments. ◼ While under normal circumstances, thought, as intent, and action can be assumed to be deeply mutually entangled, the occurrence of this syndrome can be usefully conceptualized as a phenomenon reflecting a functional "disentanglement" between thought and action. Despite the disorder the protagonist overcomes the problem to reach his career goals and to woo the girl he loves. ◼ Similar disorder is shown in the 2017 Tamil dark comedy film Peechaankai and which famous 1964 Stanley Kubrick movie?

  • 151. Q29 India has one of the largest deposits of X in the world and is a major ingredient in beauty products. Roughly 70% of X produced in India comes from illegal mines that are totally unregulated by the government. Family mining is common, and a young child’s small stature and nimble hands also make them valuable for entering narrow mine shafts and sorting smaller pieces of X. Even natural cosmetics company Lush, which prides itself on its ethical credentials, has struggled to clean up its X supply chain. This has lead to new X-free cosmetics, synthetic X cosmetics and even child labor free cosmetics in the market.
