Executive Summary
There are millions of drug addicted people in Bangladesh and most of
them are young between the age of 18 to24 (teenagers). But it is very
alarming that the children (i.e. street children) are also additcted to drug
due to various reasons. Drug abuse directly cause health hazard of the
addicted people and influences the economic and social aspects of a
country. So if we unable to removed this problem, our next generation
will be dropped to the edge of destruction.
The objectives of the study is to find out the present scenario of drug
addiction in Bangladesh, to identify different types of drugs, to find the
impact of drug addiction, to find the cause of taking drugs, to find the
bad effects on our next generation,economy & Society.
Recent trend in Drug Addiction in Bangladesh is most talked topic in our
country. It is impossible for me to collect the primary data due to
shortage of time. For this I have dependent on secondary data. In this
regard data has been collected from different type of newspaper,
research reports, website etc.

 The present scenario of drug addiction in Bangladesh.
 Effects of drug on our Econimics & Society.
 Type of drugs used in Bangladesh.
 Average age, area, education and occupation of the addicts.
 Main cause of taking drugs.
 Bad effects of drug on health, economics & society.
 Relationship among drug, next generation & economics.
 Trafficking route, available area of drugs in bangladesh.

Definition Of Drug Addiction
Addiction means strong attractions to any
bad thing.
Drug addiction means getting habituated with
stimulating drugs and the user does not feel
well without taking this.

• Feel they are always in the right
• They do not want to hear any advice
• Count themselves as very aware
• Sometimes they feel frustrated
• And even lose the will to live
Health Hazard
Physical Problem:
• Stroke, Hepatitis Cancer,
• HIV/AIDS, Liver Failure,
• Lung disease,
• Damage the youth etc.
According to the police and other sources, the number of addicts in Bangladesh is more
than six million who spend over Tk 700 million (70 crore) every day on illegal narcotics
The average cost of drugs per person
Per day – Tk. (148.2 to 241.8) BDT.
Per year - Tk. (55,146 to 88,530) BDT.
The economic impact of drug abuse included cost of drug itself, health care expenditure,
lost productivity.
Around TK 10,000 crore are being trafficked out from country for drug smuggling in the
country every year.
Bangladesh’s gross turnover in cigarettes in 1998 was over $293 million. That figure
could have purchased over 4.7 billion eggs, enough to feed almost 13 million children
an egg a day.
Basically tobacco expenditures represent more than half the expenditures for food.

Bangladesh is situated in the central point between golden crescent (Pakistan, India, and
Myanmer) in terms of geographical location.
Drug Entry Route In Dhaka:
The large number of drug arrive in the capital city via Tongi Station Road, Aminbazar
truck stand, Zinjira of Keraniganj and the eastern parts of the capital. Keraniganj,
Savar, Pagla, Tongi and Kaliganj of Gazipur and Chittagong Road are the main shelters
of the drug-dealing criminals.Of the countries, 70% of the heroin and opium produced
by Myanmar enter into Bangladesh by river routes.
Available Location In Dhaka:
More than 400 drug dealers are conducting their illegal business at about 374 spots in
Dhaka city. A number of godfathers, including ward commissioners of DCC, and listed
top terror's are in control of the entire business in the capital. Highest number of illegal
drug spots has been identified in Dhaka's Jatrabari, Demra, Shyampur and Kadamtoli
thanas, where 93 drug dens are active. About 87 sellers are dealing at those spots.
Drugs Trafficking & Available Location
Drug addiction is a great problem in Bangladesh.
There are different kinds of drugs. Most of them are day labor, unemployed & students.
Carelessness of family, coldness of law enforcement.
Most of the young taking drugs are from 12 to 25 years.
They leave school from early education
They become unemployed, financial cricis and mental dissatisfaction
Thay detached from the family and society
Collecting money of drug uses hampers the law and under situation
BDT 700 Core spend every day on illegal narcotics.
Around TK 10,000 crore are being trafficked out from country for drug smuggling per year.
Tobacco expenditures represent more than half the expenditures for food.
Create and extend poverty.
Even the social problem like Hijacking, murder, Sexual Violence, create bad image of country to the world.
Findings
Personal will of abusers is the main way to get rid of addiction which requires
motivation,
Proper inplementation of “Narcotics Control Act 1990”
Parents, teachers, religious and political leaders, players and sports personalities
will come ahead to create social against the drugs.
Articles should be enacted on anti-drug issues in the textbooks and newspapers.
Necessary steps should be taken by the government like addicted rehabilitation,
smuggler arrest, launching awarness programe on anti-drug movement, creating
special force etc.
Recommendations
Necessary steps should be taken by the government like smuggler arrest, awareness
program on anti-drug movement, creating special force etc.
Parents should give up drugs if they have any bad habit.
Youths should be encouraged to avoid mixing with evil company.
Be gained general knowledge about dangerous of Drug.
Be employments.
The program will strengthen the anti-drug smuggling.
Civil society should play an effective role to campaign against drugs.
Government and NGOs should undertake programs.
Roles of the department of narcotics control, police, RAB, BGB are not up to the
satisfactory level. So, it must be assured.
